I dunno about problem (a) (wish *I* had two monitors).

Problem b is fixed (in Firefox, so probably in Iceweasel too) by opening
a tab, typing "about:config," which gets you to a bunch of setup keys.

Find the key:

browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground

Change to true.

Brill & ace... thought it might be in about:config but had no idea
which! It works as required.

M

PS - my 2 monitors are old and power-hungry... a single 21" TFT would be
a better equivalent (but nobody's thrown one away (to me) yet).
