gpasm support for p18F4523?

Does gpasm support the p18F4523 or were the include files and linker scripts
included with the gentoo gnupic installation because they were available?

Nope, it doesn't appear to be in the supported list. Sometimes the files get
added separately from the code. If you'd like it to be supported in the next
release of gputils, follow the directions at
http://gputils.wiki.sourceforge.net/HowToAddProcessors and send in a patch.
