Hi guys:
I'm in the market for my first full-face helmet. Does anyone have a
recommendation for a local store that has reasonable prices and a good
selection to check out? I'm hoping to limit my cost to around $150 or
so. Also, any decent helmets to recommend?
Thanks
Jeff

Jeff,

  I have to recommend  http://www.newenough.com/

While not a "local store" you will find reasonable prices, a good selection
and great customer service.

When I replaced my HJC this season I tried on a number of models at Coleman
in Falls Church.
They stock the largest collection I've found in the area.

I ended up getting a Shoei RF-1000 from CompAcc. The RF-1000 has good
ventilation, snug fit but not tight for me. I did change out the cheekpads
to a larger size. Love it.
If you are looking for a size XL, you can't beat $224 plus shipping.

I find CompAcc to be very prompt with shipping.

Thanks Steve, but I'd like to be in a position to try on the helmet,
even it it means that I pay a bit more for it.

Jeff

+1 on newenough.com. Try helmetharbor.com too, motorcyclecloseouts.com.

Try them on at the store, buy online: save money - period.

[Dave]  I 2nd the Coleman Powersports recommendation for helmet selection.
They have a store in Falls Church & Hood ... I mean, Woodbridge.
<disclaimer> I bought my 1198s from them, however their selection is pretty
good. </disclaimer>.  Right down PW pkwy. Is a Kaw/Honda dealer, Motorcycle
Factory, they have a smaller, but still good selection.

Personally, I think you're correct to make the 1st full face purchase or at
least trying them on at a dealer where you can put your head in the lid.
The measurements get you the right 'size', but not necessarily shape.  If
you wear a large Shoei, or Arai, I have a large Shark RSX (American) Flag
model that is 18 mos. Old and needs a good home.  I replaced it with the
same model, one size smaller.

I'd suggest you get your fit close and when you've narrowed down your
selection, put the leading candidate on, and wear it while you shop for a
while, or go for a ride if they'll let you.  Make sure you don't have
pressure points or get a headache in the ensuing 10-20 minutes.  A lot of
the upper echelon models have interchangeable liner pieces to "tailor" the
fit to your head.

One more thing - Snell 2010 helmets should be hitting the stores in the
coming 8-10 weeks IIRC.  Particularly if you have a medium size or smaller
head, you would be better off waiting for the snell 2010 rating, which
supposedly certifies that the helmet transmits less impact to the head.  The
old snell, 2005, was mutually exclusive to either BSI, or ECE 22-05, the
other prevailing certifications.  The new 2010 standard would not be
mutually exclusive, although that doesn't guarantee any of the manufacturers
will multi-certify.

A previous poster offered some online resources as well as newenough below.
I've dealt with most of the mentioned links and +1 them.
I've had Shoei, Arai & Shark helmets and liked all of them.  My only <knock
wood> get off was a low speed low side that smacked my Arai corsair into the
pavement pretty good, and I have high praise for the helmet (snell 2005
standard notwithstanding).

Bob's BMW in Jessup, MD has a good selection of Shoei, Arai and
Scorpion helmets.  Probably won't find a Shoei or Arai in the $150
price range, but I got my Scorpion EXO-700 for about that from Bob's.
Prices were very comparable to mail order once you factor in shipping.

Bob's is also having a promo until 10/3. They pay Md. sales tax on all
purchases (except new motorcycles.)
