Suppose you have created a forum called "Beatles" at Nabble. With Nabble's cataloging feature, you can find related forums/categories such as "Music", "Bands", or "Rock", and add them as parents to your "Beatles". By adding parents to your forum, the posts in your "Beatles" will float up to its parent forums/categories either directly or through search result, thus gaining exposure to a much bigger but closely related audience.
Adding parents to your forum is done through Nabble's forum edit feature. Please note that you should do this only when there is a legitimate parent-child relationship, or you may offend users of the other forums. They can remove your forum from their forums easily or even report abuse. For guidelines of cataloging, please read this help article: What's the right way to catalog forums and messages?
In contrast, new forums in places like Yahoo Groups and ezBoard are mostly disjointed. Your "Beatles" is as isolated as the other hundreds of similiar groups fixated under a canned directory. Your chance of getting noticed is one in hundreds.
