hi team!Hi, I'm graduated in physic and actually a student for the Master of science, Debian user from some years. Recently I decided to spend some of my free time to collaborate with Debian. I would want to join the Debian Science Team because some packages are useful in my studies and everywhere developer recommend to join a team to start contribution. Since I'm new to this I need a bit of help for improving my knowledge of the Debian distribution and packaging/mantaining the system. How can I collaborate with you? Thanks for your patience and your help. Andrea |

The main one is to upload and maintain new packages in the archive. You can also help us by fixing some bugs and participate to the maintenance of the packages you are using. You will find some information on the debian-science policy: http://debian-science.alioth.debian.org/debian-science-policy.html It is also possible to contribute to the Debian-science blends by adding new packages: http://blends.alioth.debian.org/science/tasks/ Don't hesitate if you have any questions, Sylvestre > Thanks for your patience and your help. > > > Andrea > > -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-science-request@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Thanks for your interest in Debian Science! There are a lot of ways to contribute, i.e. by fixing bugs or maintaining packages. You can look at the current bugs at the Debian Science bug page [1]. Information on how to use the bug tracking system (BTS) can be found under [2]. If you register an account on Alioth [3], you can request to join the Debian Science project. This will give you access to the Subversion and Git repositories of the group, to which you can commit your fixes. Sending them to the BTS as patches is fine, too. If you are interested in packaging, I recommend to subscribe to the debian-mentors mailing list. You can ask questions there and learn by just reading. Additionally, there are three documents that are have to read: The Debian Policy Manual [4], the Debian Social Contract [5] and the Debian Developers reference [6]. Also, there is a Debian Science Policy Manual [7] (which needs updates here and there, I'm working on it). It covers some things that should help making work for the team easier. Then, go find a package you care about. Helping with existing packages might be easier at first. If you feel confident, create a new package. You will need sponsoring to get the package into the archive. The process is mentioned in the documents I cited. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask us! A lot of people just use packages, find something wrong, and gripe to themselves without notifying the package maintainer. And there is always a need for better documentation, so if you find something difficult, try to think of a way to explain it so the next person has an easier time, and send it to the package maintainer. -Adam -- GPG fingerprint: D54D 1AEE B11C CE9B A02B C5DD 526F 01E8 564E E4B6 Engineering consulting with open source tools http://www.opennovation.com/ |

In a parallel thread we are just looking for someone to help with the automated backporting of scientific packages for earlier releases of Debian. This would provide a considerable overview on packages in our distribution and probably lead to tons of candidates for side-projects ... or provide contacts for some scientific work. If you have a look at the tasks pages http://blends.alioth.debian.org/science/tasks/ you see several "yellow" buttons, which can be considered as a todo hint: - Screenshots of packages - Translations of package descriptions - Debtags Everything is quite easy to do and might be a very good start to learn what we are dealing with in Debian Science. Thanks all for reply! I will register myself on Alioth and stay some time on mailing list like developer and mentors for learning from much skilled people! I read the backporting thread... not very sure on how can I help you but if you think there is a task that also a newbe can do, I'm here. (I consider myself a quite good user, but I have no experience as a maintainer... :-( ) Andrea Da: Steffen Moeller <steffen_moeller@...> A: Adam C Powell IV <hazelsct@...> Cc: Andrea Neroni <hellnote01-debian@...>; debian-science@...
