Hi,

We are pleased to announce hornget going live

http://www.hornget.net

We have a windows service that builds selected .net OSS projects and
resolves their dependencies once a day and makes them available for
download.

Thoughts?

We need contributors and input to keep this initiative going.

Cheers

Paul,

First, congratulations on getting this project out the door! My mind is
racing because I've been working on this exact issue for a few months and
only today learned about Horn. I've got lots of questions, comments, and
feedback but instead of vomiting all over the alt.net group I'm going to
watch your DSL talk, read through the Horn groups, and chime in there.

Thanks! Nice work!

Hi,

Does Horn rely solely on it's own repository, or does it enable folks to use
other repositories
that provide the same format, as is done in Linux?

At this minute in time it pulls the descriptors of build information from
here:

http://github.com/dagda1/hornget

It would easy to point at a different url.

Hi Craig,

Sounds reasonable. Right now, I'm asking questions to decide whether to
spend any
time joining another list or getting connected to another project. That
seems to be a
theme for my life this month: lots of competing stuff.

So... is the intent that one of the products of the project would be a
standard format for
the meta-information about software, analogous to deb or .deb-src format,
but limited
to .NET apps?

Further question: do you see a separation developing between upstream
developers
and "distributors" of the software as in the Linux world? That could be
mostly a good
thing in my view, but it requires standards so that projects can also
distribute the
latest versions of software which might not yet have made it into your
packages.

For example, NUnit will be joining lots of other projects in providing a
repository
for it's own "bleeding edge" builds for Linux (initially Debian/Ubuntu)
users. It
would be cool to be able to do the same thing for Windows, but without
needing
to satisfy the integration requirements (I assume you have to have some for
this to
work) of the central repository.

Charlie

Does this get the latest STABLE build of each, does it build from "bleeding edge" builds, or is it dependent on the various dependencies?

>> Does this get the lattest STABLE build

Not everything has a STABLE build.

We do have different versions for example if  you look at nhibernate:

http://www.hornget.net/packages/orm/nhibernate/

We have the trunk 3.0 build and the 2.1.

But both the nhibernate descriptors pull their castle dependencies from the
soon to be deleted castle trunk.

We would like to provide both but even getting to this stage with limited
contributors has been a struggle and one I have started to resent :-).

I am hoping if this does not get adoption then at least it will stimulate
debate.

You only have to look at the different versions of the boo libraries that
the various OSS projects use to realise what a mess the whole thing is.

We have a .boo format to define the build instructions and metadata for each
package.

On the distribution side, the horn compilation is an open source tool, used
to generate the packages available on the hornget site, and has patching
functionality, so there's nothing stopping anyone else from setting up their
own internal or global server for a specific purpose, such as a bleeding
edge, or a stable repository, as in the debian world.

At the moment you'd need to do a bit of spurc

To finish my last point, to set up your own distribution, you just need to
clone the git package tree and edit the source to point to your copy. It
should be smoother, but we'll have that fixed by 1.0 if there's enough
interest.

Hi charlie,

I would love more of the bigger oss players to get involved, after all horn
is trying to smooth the adoption and delivery of their stuff.  At the minute
castle is going through a major restructuring and we have one guy on the
mailing list who is helping out by creating the new dsl descriptors of build
information for the new split castle projects.  I would like to see the horn
descriptors maintained by the relevant parties.  I moved the dsl descriptors
to git to hopefully help ease this.

Also like any oss project we need contributors.  By contributing, I don't
just mean writing forum posts.  .net 4.0 is round the corner and we will
have to offer offerings in both framework versions.  Since we started
developing horn, a lot of oss moved to git and we had to cater for that.

I get the feeling that this quite far down people's lists of being that
important and for me was more a bit of a challenge at the start than
anything else but progress has been made and certainly further than anything
I know of.

Maybe the big oss parties could think about making it easier and standardise
parts of what they do buy that seems unlikely.

Get involved is my message, this is an interesting and challenging problem,
at least I found it so ;-).

Charlie,

I'm sure other horn developers will have their own take on this, and I'll
let let chip in if they like.

We would hope that the developers of each project would take ownership of
their own boo files, and push back boo files for new versions, and changes
on the trunk, back to the main repo, especially changes to dependencies.

The horn source is available if project developers want to use it as a build
tool to verify dependencies. I could see, for example, Castle could use horn
to build their subprojects via dependency chains, test the compilation
against new versions of NHibernate and generate the downloadable dlls.

For the moment though, the most important thing we need are more boo files
so we can cover more projects, so this is an appeal to anyone out there with
a .Net OSS project, to add your project to the repository so that end-user
developers can retrieve your project through horn. The more projects we
have, the more we can understand the dependencies and conflicts between
them.

Craig.
