how to leave screen brightness handling to the BIOS

Hello,

how can g-p-m be told to leave screen brightness to the BIOS when xrandr
is used instead of HAL, i.e. what is the equivalent of setting
laptop_panel.brightness_in_hardware to true with HAL?
There seems to be a problem with Ubuntu 9.10 on MSI Wind Netbooks which
appear to handle the brightness-related keyboard events in BIOS but
still emit keypresses
