iTunesU Integration via Sakai?

Hi folks,

Has anyone in the Sakai community built integration with iTunesU,  passing
authentication credentials and / or course info, etc.?

If so, would you be willing to share a bit of what you did? via LinkTool?
Homegrown solution?

Has it been a rewarding project for faculty, students, and staff?
Convenient enough?

Likewise, if you examined the possibility and then went with a multimedia
server in-house / hosted, instead of iTunesU (or, in addition to), how did
that go?

Many thanks for any quick overviews, technical or otherwise...

Also, am curious of folks' single file size limit system-wide in Sakai,
out of curiousity. 20 MB? When do you draw the line to require content to
be hosted outside of Sakai, and where is it housed at your institution?

Offline is fine, too.

Cheers.

Yes, U-M has integrated with iTunes. Zhen Qian is the developer
behind the integration and can provide more technical details.

We've gotten pretty good feedback, but sometimes have issues with
faculty who want to stream vs. download and watch large files.

There are a few streaming and other MM servers on campus that we
don't maintain, and some faculty choose to use those services if
iTunes doesn't meet  their needs for some reason. I think iTunes is
the default choice however.

We've used the 20 MB limit for several years, but have recently been
planning to increase it to 50 MB. Of course WebDav is a way to get
around the Sakai upload limit so it's not a hard limit. It's a more
complex issue than is immediately apparent as student problems
increase (download times, tying up campus printers, time outs, etc.)
as file sizes increases. Faculty think nothing of creating a 150 MB
Powerpoint and are puzzled when students have problems. All that
said, 20 MB seems pretty paltry these days.

SMD.

Daniel,

IU is also using the UM developed iTunesU tool and we have made some
enhancements to it to make it more flexible.  You can find the tool
here:

https://source.sakaiproject.org/contrib/umctx/

The workflow looks like this:

1) Instructor adds tool to their course site.
2) Instructor invokes tool for the first time.
3) iTunesU tool provisions an iTunes site on Apple's servers.
4) iTunes application is launched and directed to new iTunes site.
5) Instructor now has full control to grant various iTunes permissions
to various roles (e.g. student) to that site.

Best, L

Albany Med is using an older version of the tool Lance mentioned below -
which continues to work fine on 2.5.x

For us - the new features weren't worth changing anything on the limited
number of folks that use the tool.

We, the University of Virginia, also have our own local fork of the UM
ITunesU tool, which is going into production next semester.

Perhaps at some point all these forks should be merged or at least
shared...

Yuji,
I've also been modifying the UM tool. Eventually we'd like for it to cache
the iTunesU Handle for the course site in a db table. Any chance your fork
can do that?
