a "back to referring website" button/link so people who accidentally arrive at the validator from a website can easily return to the site they were viewing.

Well, user agents typically offer a "Back" button that happens to be
the "second most used feature on the Web" [1].

Don't all browsers come with that? It's called the "back" button. ;)

can i point you to the first question of the validator FAQ? :)

http://validator.w3.org/docs/help.html#clickedandlost

that happens to users a lot and while the back button is an option, of course a very standard one, still some users feel they are in the same (referring) site and are confused at what they find.

I suggest a soft landing with "you have arrived at the W3C validator, the page you visited was ?valid, Please -click here- to return to the site you were viewing"

When back buttons have been built imto web pages it has been found that
they are used very little compared to the back buttom of the browser.

Besides, the validator is for developers, not clueless surfers.

again http://validator.w3.org/docs/help.html#clickedandlost the first question of the FAQ is how did it get here? Users can and do arrive at the validator from a site and i simply suggest a statement with "where they are, why and <back", so that they can have a smooth surf.

The web did not get achieve good usability by developers referring to users as "clueless surfers" ;-)

What i was saying is, if you dont put validator links and icons on your
site they wont get to the validator. They will have to explicitly search
for the validator. Thats what i meant when i say that the validator is
for dewvelopers.

The web doesn't achieve good anything by redirecting someone to a site
that has nothing to do with the one they just left. Why do you want to
tempt them in the first place? And if they dont know how to find a back
button they are clueless.

why then does the service offer these links and buttons and badges?

refer to a Plone site for an example of apparent "best practice" of having "valid XHTML" in the footer of the site....
