installation of tiki 3.1, php 5.2, mysql 3.23

I failed to install tikiwiki (I succeded installing 1.7, 1.9, 3.0 and 3.1 several times). 

at this installation the following software is preinstalled on the server

php 5.2.0-8+etch15

mysql  Ver 11.18 Distrib 3.23.57, for pc-linux (i686)

tiki-install.php showed no error until selecting an installation profile. selecting "bare-bones default install" no error is displayed but the installation process terminates with a blank page.

selecting  every other profile the installation process terminates with the error "Fatal error: Call to a member function fetchRow() on a non-object in /var/www/<sitename>/tiki/lib/profilelib/profilelib.phpon line 644"

in both cases only three tables has been created in the database:

tiki_dynamic_variables

tiki_minichat

tiki_pages_translation_bits

what's going wrong?

MYSQL site says: "Active development and support for MySQL database
server versions 3.23, 4.0, and 4.1 has ended."
