Re: iphone 3g and new apps?Michelle, I'm using the new OS (can't get the phone yet).
The new apps are really great, when they work. The overall OS feels better, but seems to be less stable overall on the old phones. The new apps in my mind push me even more to want a 3G version. The waits on fully installed apps feel worse than waiting on web pages to load. The apps are fun. I installed a bunch. My fave free apps are twitteriffic & facebook. My fave pay for app is Comic Touch. The location aware apps like Yelp, Loopt, Where and Whrrl are also fantastic, but these are "yet another social network that I have to get my friends to join". Loopt feels the most together so far, but Whrrl has integrations to Yelp which means it is useful now w/o the network build up time. While I like app facebook better than web facebook (on the iPhone) I find it really funny that the app has features that the web (iPhone) doesn't and visa versa. It seems that most apps that also have web versions are concentrating on two areas: camera integration and location awareness. Even Twitterific focuses on both of these areas. Yes, I'm trying to convince myself that the $400 to buy a new one is "worth it" .. I just can't justify it. hmm? hmm? I wonder if I could "sell" my old contract so I can start with a new one. (It's a $200 or 100% difference between upgrading and starting fresh. Only a telco cound figure out how to screw people who want to upgrade something.) -- dave . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Had the iPhone 3G for a day now. Downloaded 11 apps — 7 free, 4 paid. * Feels better in the hand. Something about the beveled back makes it feel more natural, more organic in the hand. * The black plastic back shows some smudges, but they disappear quickly. * Speakers are better. * Screen looks brighter. I know they adjusted the white balance to make it a bit more yellow, less blue to increase the "natural" look of things. But mine also seems brighter than my v1.0 phone. * 3G is definitely faster. * Non-recessed headphone jack means you can use standard headphones now. Drawbacks * None of my old cases work w/the new phone due to the curved back. I had two. Waiting for a new hardshell plastic to arrive in 1-2 weeks. Cheers! online shopping - checkout experienceI'm curious about "checkout". Is anyone else also interested in this,
or am I the nerd at the party right now? I've experienced some good and some not so good (ok, I'll say it: horrible). Most recently I've been impressed with the checkout experience offered by the out-the-box design in Magento (a free, open-source online shopping system). It appears to be a "one-page" checkout, showing you right off the bat that there are 6 things to go over during checkout (maybe a bit much for the top-level steps in the process): 1. Checkout Method, 2. Billing Information, 3. Shipping Information, 4. Shipping Method, 5. Payment information and 6. Order Review. You find that each step is short and sweet as you're walked through the process and the forms are free of clutter. I'm thinking of adopting this as my current template for basic checkout process. Has anyone else on the list dabbled with ecommerce and checkout, or even Magento? Comments on your "dream checkout"? Re: iphone 3g and new apps?Hi Michele, I've been using a 3G since launch; some impressions: - My 3G iPhone is more honest about my reception. The 2G phone had 3 bars in my house, but the call quality was... well, it was bad. The 3G says zero bars and means it. Same reception as 2G, more honest readings. Don't know what's better, really. Optimism or realism :) Many have reported better reception with the 3G, but I've seen the opposite if anything. Also, not sure if this is a "thing", but when I cross from 3G to Edge coverage during a call, I drop. Something goofy is going on. Also, 3G indoor coverage is not good at all. I get Edge indoors without much issue, but 3G... not so much. For instance, I have Edge in my living room. Walk out the front door, 3G. Walk back in, nada. - I like the app store and there's some good stuff in there (love yelp and google), but some of the apps are truly weak. For instance, I wanted a simple app that allowed me to track calories. There is such a thing, but it's just full of bugs and there is no return policy for apps at all. Buyer beware and do read the responses from other users. Many apps are good, and the ratings will tell the tale. Also, this can only get better with time as more developers come online. At the moment, many of these seem very homegrown and lacking in stability and professional support and/or polish. Lastly, battery life. I turn Location Services off most of the time to keep from draining quickly. It also helps to leave 3G off unless needed, but that's yielded less of a return that disabling Location Services. Conclusion: I like it and am so far happy. When 3G is available, it's so nice. The Location Services help, but are less optimal than the real turn by turn GPS I had on Verizon (and AT&T with a Blackberry)... Some say turn-by-turn will never come to the iPhone due to GPS power, others say hogwash. We'll see... The app store is good, but will be great once more stable and professional apps come online. Also, I do hope for some sort of comprehensive return policy for the more "bogus" apps. At the moment, it's a fly-paper scenario that some uneducated users get stuck in. Good luck! -Dan On Jul 13, 2008, at 7:45 AM, Michele Marut wrote: > All, > Has anyone had the chance to try out the new iphone 3g and the new > apps > available? Re: iphone 3g and new apps?I still have the 2G but I got the software/firmware update and have downloaded a couple of apps. A simple TO DO list works fairly well for a free app, but doesn't do a whole lot more than give you a checkable list. An inexpensive Sudoku game works well, too (man, it's nice to be able to do ANYTHING on the train when we're in a tunnel). What I need is a real calendar system that allows me to track appointments and to-dos the way Agendus did on my old Treo. Heck, even an app version of Remember the Milk (with reminders that you can actually snooze for a time YOU determine) would be a great boon. Haven't seen one like that yet, though... --Marty -----Original Message----- From: discuss-bounces@...
