is this possible with Tikz?

Dear Pgf-users,

I have the problem of preparing a figure like the one I am attaching
here, and I am wondering if it is at all possible to construct this
type of "truncated pyramids of spheres" with Tikz. I can make some
very nice structures of spheres following the manual examples, but
only in 2D. I do not see how to produce it in 3D. Any clue?
