I think there is great benefit to having an independent (person or
group) do the testing of a design. I also think there is benefit to
having product managers generate the use cases designers work to
solve for. Additionally, having the back end development team do the
QA is troublesome.

Some level of self fulfilling prophesy is likely to find its way in.
Isn't that why we go to someone else for things as simple as prof
reading? What I don't think, is that it is necessarily cause for
inditement. They may very well have had separate staff do the
testing. If you understand how agencies work, then you know that it
is very much about billables... and with that you must have
deliverables. It is very rare for an agency to recommend another
group in that situation.
> usability test report that the previous agency had produced after
> testing their own design work. I went back to the source tapes and
> there seemed to be a dramatic difference between the level of
> problems users were having in the sessions, and the resulting report.
>
>
> I know it's convenient for e-commerce site owners to get an
> integrated package, esp. when large MSA's are in place. And trying
> to keep ahead of Agile cycles puts strain on the schedule and number
> of partners. But I'm just wondering if readers of this list feel
> like there is an inherent conflict of interest, or if testing is
> viewed as a normal component of a design partner relationship.
Cha-Cha: Improv, Creativity and Collaboration.

*"Yes, My Iguana Loves to Cha-Cha: Improv, Creativity and Collaboration"*

Improv is not "stand-up comedy." It's a series of games with rules that
offer huge degrees of freedom within a set of constraints. In these games we
bring out a lot of basic, quickly understood and communicated rules of
culture that are implicit, not explicit. The activities of design
(collaboration, creativity, and design research, for starters) have
interesting similarities with improv: All have in-the-moment aspects; we
learn upon reflection; there's enormous unspoken interaction and there is
often an "aha" moment. Design and improv also have important similarities:
the need to collaborate and brainstorm, the importance of breakthrough
thinking, the balance between process, structure, and unfettered creativity.

Playing with improv can make us more mindful of the power of listening, and
can be harnessed to create a more collaborative work culture, as a way to
develop one's own creativity, or to help warm up teammates and clients in
workshops and design sessions. In this interactive presentation you will
learn more about improv, listening, creativity, and how they all connect
together to support one another. No iguanas will be harmed.

*WHEN*

- Develop the 2010 strategic priorities for the U.S. National Design Policy
Initiative
- Finalize membership of an “American Design Council”
- Gain a sense of the priorities for design from the Department of Commerce
- Engage the wider design community in national design policy decision
making
- Develop a set of case studies that demonstrate the value of design for
publication

There are ways for you to participate as well:

1. Vote for the top policy proposal: http://bit.ly/39NazT
You have an opportunity to influence which of the existing design policy
proposals should be NDPI's priority for 2010.

2. Participate in the Summit virtually:
Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=50332103806
Twitter: @usdesignpolicy
details will be shared.
I'll also be documenting my experiences and sharing back with you after the
Summit.

3. Provide a case study
We've each been asked to bring a case study brief of a project from the past
3 years that demonstrates design's positive social, economic, and
environmental impact (i.e one-page description of the project goal, client,
design team, time frame, and its social, economic, and environmental
impact). Do you have a project that you'd like to seen held up as such an
example? Please contact me directly at janna.devylder (at) ixda.org by
November 25th.

-------------------------------------------

This is one opportunity for us within the U.S., but we know that in order to
truly keep our reach global we need to find opportunities such as these in
other countries as well. Please, as you come across them, share back with
the community.

Thanks,

Hi Sean,

We recently used UsabilityWorks (http://usabilityworks.com) to recruit
34 participants in CA and TX and they did a smash-up job. Everyone
showed up, matching what we were looking for exactly, and ready to
participate in the study. I highly recommend them and we'll continue
to use them for all of our recruiting.

That said, if you want to do something at the end of the month, you
better contact them right away. The first effort from a good
recruiting company takes time to get up to speed. If you wait any
longer, you won't have enough quality participants for your study.

Jared

p.s. Unless you're administering a quiz to the participants, it's a
"usability test", not a "user test". You're not testing the users,
you're testing the design.
notified the following week, commencing 16th November 2009.

Well, of course you are right.
Unfortunately, the reality for most of us is that the technology is
created and it is our job to do our best to make it "not suck".
Very very very (way too) few of us begin our work truly with open
ended discovery of needs/motivations. We almost always start with
something existing.

A great example to the contrary is the work that Robert Fabricant
presented at last year's Interaction09 conference. where no new
technologies were used, but instead existing technologies were
brought to bear with new communications/messaging to creae new
services. (video available at http://library.ixda.org/).

And it is where service and interaction meet that the repurposing of
existing technologies instead of the invention of new ones probably
has the greatest design opportunities.

Yes, this all proves that the examples are too few. But one could
easily say now that the web is such a ubiquitous part of
industrialized life that no matter what we add there (or more
generally to the Internet) is not an invention of technology but just
the use of a tremendous broad utility much as Robert's example of
using SMS demonstrated.

Just a friendly reminder about World Usability Day on Thursday, November
12th, 6:30pm at Tonic Coffeebar and Lounge. To further our discussion on
user-centered design and sustainable design, we are excited to announce the
following panelists for World Usability Day 2009.

John Umphress is the Conservation Program Specialist at the Austin Energy
Green Building Program. He has been active in environmental and public
policy for the past two decade and is particularly interested in the
advantages of building low-mass structures using panelized materials, while
relying on passive heating and cooling techniques.

Brian Lasseter, who in 2006 along with Jennifer, decided to become committed
to doing anything that they could do help our planet. This was not just
about fuzzy feel good "tree-hugging" actions - Jennifer and Brian are
engineers, and they saw these actions as a way to increase their personal
energy independence, spark local conversation, and hedge against future
utility and gasoline price increases. Jennifer and Brian realized that "not
being dependent on foreign oil" was not just a nice goal, but entirely
possible.

And, don't forget about the bonuses!

1.	Cell phone drive for SafePlace - Bring your old cell phone(s) -
working or not!
2.	Book giveaway courtesy of O'Reilly

Super, thanks very much for reviewing the doc, Dave!

RE: these two "feature requests," I daresay that the Job Board
postings can address relocation & telecommuting in the body of the
posting at launch. But it would indeed be great to filter explicitly
for jobs that support relocation and/or telecommuting. At least a
global search for those terms that's constrained to the Job Board
section would turn them up....

And yes, an Education section is definitely the biggest chunk of
content without its own home. I've long envisioned that Education
becomes a top level navigation item. In the meantime, it should be
made into one of the top-level Topics in the Resources area and also
a tag for Discussion contents. A list of educational programs could
also be added to the Hiring Resources section in the sense that
school is a resource for professional growth. So, whenever the
Education initiative produces some material that they feel is
relatively complete it could be worked into a variety of places.

Room to grow, room to grow...that's what we're all about! ;)

Cheers,

Re: Forms: Asking for email first during	registration?

Jennifer asked
<snip - background on the forms she's working on>

> What this makes me think of is something I'm continually being asked
> by my manager and stakeholders, "Do you have any documented best
> practices on X?" And, though I find tons of awesome articles by all
> you wonderful people here, what is really desired is a 'checklist'
> of best practices.

I'm going to interpret this as "Why did you write a book (and a bunch of
articles) instead of the checklist of best practices that we actually need?"

And now I'm going to brood on an answer:

I don't have a problem with checklists. Mine might run something like this:

1. Find out what your users want to do
2. Establish the relative importance to them of filling in the form compared
to what they want to do
3. Find out what your organisation actually does with each data item you
collect
4. For every item you ask for, think very hard whether the value to your
organisation outweighs the risk of losing a user who doesn't want to give it
to you.
5. Write questions that are easy to answer
6. Create a flow that puts questions into a logical order
7. Think hard about whether your validation will encourage correct
completion, or will simply force a user into giving you the wrong answer
8. Make it look good
9. Run loads of usability tests, and make use of the findings.
10. If in doubt about what to do, see item 9 and repeat as often as you can.

First possible problem: I think that the type of checklist some people want
(probably not you) is a lot more trivial than that and contains advice like
"put the labels above the fields". Or maybe "put the labels to the left of
the fields". The trouble with bits of advice like that is that users don't
care all that much where the labels go, but they do really, really care
about what they're being asked and the context they are being asked it in.
Items 1 and 2 on my list, but things that have to be thought about rather
than issued as instructions.

Second possible problem: the checklist tends to require a follow-up here and
there. For example: What exactly are questions that are easy to answer? What
does answering a question actually mean?

So why did I write a book? Hmm, a moment of madness, maybe? But also because
I thought it might help people to have a short overview of the topic from
beginning to end.

And we did keep it to under 200 pages.

Should I have written a checklist instead? Probably. I've written this email
in about 10 minutes and it took 10 years of anguish to write the book. Only,
maybe I was only able to write a 10-item checklist *because* of the 10 years
of anguish - and the several years before that of thinking about the
problems. Maybe the checklist doesn't work for you either...

Anyway. Hope this helps.

Best

Good point about the gallery view - I'm guessing the designers just
left it off for look and feel purposes, not for any valid reason (I
wasn't involved in that aspect at all).

As for the plus icon, the reason we used that is purely for branding.
The site (and magazine) has used the concept of "Taste of Home
Plus" as additional web content for magazine subscribers. I
personally would have loved to use something more clear, like you
said, but again, it was purely a branding decision.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I worked on a project with similar requirements, except that typically
there would be just a handful of search results available to the
public but hundreds available on the members-only site. The solution
I proposed (which the client decided not to implement) was to group
the public results together, then list out the first 10 or 20 results
from the members-only site with a lock icon. The list would be
preceded by copy explaining that these were results available on the
members-only site, along with a link to learn more about becoming a
member. There would also be an option to expand the
password-protected results, but the results themselves would not be
hyperlinked if the user was not logged into the site. It was a little
clunky, but I think it would have been effective.

The reason I went with that approach rather than the more
straightforward one shown in the WSJ screenshot was that membership
wasn't a single product or a straightforward process, and you
couldn't become a member online. Partly for that reason, the client
opted not to show the results from the member site at all, which
avoids any potential confusion but also misses an opportunity to sell
the benefits of membership.
> Subject: Re: [IxDA Discuss] E-Commerce Terminology Survey (Correction)
>
> I guess it also depends on the amount of 'clothing expertise' /
> willingness to spend money in the target group of shoppers.
>
> I think my own personal clothing vocabulary gives out after about 12
> words. So there's no way I'll be buying clothes online in the
> first place.
>
> Goodness knows what this is:
>
> "Beagle slanted placket shirt"
I just want to congratulate you on a thorough and well thought out
IA, Visual Design and Interaction Design document.

Thank you for what was obviously a lot of hard work.

It is hard to give criticism to a document like this b/c I'm sure
there was so much conversation about each of the elements in there.

In terms of "feature requests".

In the job board under location (or near it) something about
relocation and another thing about telecommuting.

A section that is missing which is well the biggest recurring thread
on the discussion list is about programs that teach IxD. A big
resource section to be paid to this item. Maybe the education

Hi folks,

I wanted to post this message a second time as it's an important
update and an opportunity for community feedback if you so desire.

Please see the main update announcement here:
http://www.ixda.org/blog/2009/11/conan-update-design-doc/

The principal part I wanted to re-share is that we have published the
Conan Design Doc for all to see: http://bit.ly/17LHAJ . This material
represents the fruits of over 10 months of work from the
all-volunteer IxDA Conan team. We investigated our community's
needs, developed user experience requirements, conceived interaction
design & visual design solutions, and conducted a concept feedback
round.

If you want to comment on what you see in this material, please talk
about it here on list or feel free to send private feedback to me via
email. We'll see what we can do to prioritize new ideas or
suggestions within the current project. Else, we'll create a product
backlog, as future extensibility is a HUGE cornerstone of our web
platform strategy. Conan is by the community, for the community! : )

Cheers,
Liz / IxDA Vice-President & Conan lead

I did an analysis by IP address. Around 66% of responses came from US
locations (UK and Canada were 9% and 6% approximately). 'Placket' is a
word that is used in both American and British English. I am not sure
about 'French front'. I started by asking some American friends if they
knew what it meant, but they were as clueless as me (I was born and
raised in the US but have been living in the UK for 35 years). That was
the motivation for the survey (which was done on the CHI-WEB list as
well as IxDA).

In spite of other replies, I am not convinced that using unfamiliar
words in inconsistent ways is helpful to user experience (pictures or

Hello...In last few months of my Study as Interaction Design Student I
was wondering if we really forget that Interaction design is here to
helps us to make our life easier or just to makes it more complex and
problematic?

I think that we invent new technologies and then trying to
implemented them into each aspect of our life, e.g we design a smart
house to reacts and interacts with its owner ,trying to help the
owner to fulfill his need to be with somebody or his need to
interacts with other people, and then this design mentioned as very
successful project and designers of younger generation trying to copy
this point of view and following same road.

Shouldn't we instead of implementing new technologies into user's
life and writing "technology" as an answer in front of every
questions ,try to think really outside of the Box and help our user
to learn how to communicate with his own world???

I'm really confused ....Can we find a way some days that we give the
users the wide range of possibilities without adding any fancy, good
looking technologies to his life?

Paul, I think your example speaks more to a lack of professionalism on
the part of the previous agency than an inherent conflict of interest.

At my firm, Lofthouse Design, we have always conducted usability
testing on the sites and applications we design. In doing so, we find
opportunities to improve the product we deliver to our clients -- and
we do not take any criticism as an attack on our design skills.

For example, we recently tested an online enrollment application with
a sample of Medicare-age seniors. Although no users complained, we
observed first-hand that users struggled to use standard form
controls like radio buttons. They spent unnecessary time and effort
trying to click on a small target.

Based on this observation, we identified an opportunity to improve
the usability of basic form controls. We created a set of custom UI
elements that visually highlight whenever the user mouses over any
part of the radio button or its label, creating a much bigger target
for the user to click.

Had we not conducted the user testing ourselves, we may not have seen
such a subtle usability problem -- nor could we have come up with an
innovative design solution as we did in this case.

Hope this example helps.

Recently I was on an e-commerce strategy project. I received a
usability test report that the previous agency had produced after
testing their own design work.

For in-person research, we've gone with Davis Recruitment, and they
did a great job.

Outside of agency recruiting, you should also look into recruiting
using a form on your website, if you've never tried it before. You
can use a tool like Ethnio (ethnio.com), which is specially built for
user research recruiting, to place a short screener survey on your
website. As soon as your web visitors' responses come in, you can
contact them to participate in your research study. You can also use
automatic form builders like Google Docs' forms feature
(docs.google.com) and Wufoo (wufoo.com).

One advantage of recruiting this way is that you can talk to people
who actually came to your website because they're interested in your
product or service%u2014that's not always the case with recruiting
agencies. If you're conducting a remote user study, you can also
contact recruits to begin the study at the very moment that they
submit the recruiting form, which means you can actually watch them
using your website or product as they normally would.

Full disclosure, I work for the makers of Ethnio, Bolt | Peters. We
also specialize in live online recruiting and remote user research
methods; feel free to email us at info [at] boltpeters [dot] com if
you have any questions about live recruiting. Hope this helps!

On Monday 23 November 2009 the second Design by Fire Café will take place. Design by Fire Café is an informal gathering for (interaction) designers organized by IxDA Nederland. Each café will feature a short, inspiring presentation as a starter for discussion and chat.

PRESENTATION ABSTRACT

Froukje Sleeswijk Visser is our guest speaker on Monday 23 November. During her PhD research Froukje developed a set of guidelines to translate the outcome of user experience research into useful input for a design process. The underlying theoretical model indicates how to attain the three main qualities (empathy, inspiration and commitment). This Design by Fire Café Froukje will present a case to clarify her model. The boundary between product design and service design will be one of the topics in the discussion following the presentation.

Froukje Sleeswijk Visser studied Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft Technical University. In 2009 she got her PhD at that same faculty. Since 2006 Froukje conducts inspiring user research and concept development from within her company ContextQueen (http://www.contextqueen.nl/).

DETAILS

Hi again all -

Thanks for all the great angles to consider. To address at least a
few comments:

1. The form I'm working on is a registration form used for sales
lead generation, and comprise - I'd estimate - about 90% of the
forms on our site. Our Field Marketing team owns all such forms and
wishes all instances of them to be the same.

2. What users "get" in return is one of the following: (a) a gated
asset [e.g., white paper], (b) a call or email from a sales person,
or (c) a trial download. (The forms are all B2B.)

- In some cases (more added every few months), we set this
registration form to create a Single Sign-On (SSO) so that upon
return, the user can enter their email address and password so as not
to need to fill the form out again. (Though, depending on entry point
or the reason for the visit, users may be prompted with a marketing
form - optional fields [I think] - before they can continue to the
'asset'.

3. The request for email first was brought up by a regional team
which has email first on their SSO form. So, it was an idea to keep
things 'consistent'. Thus, I am trying to identify if it makes
sense.

- The form has about 14 fields (6 of which are for street address).

4. Usability. Yes. I so very much wish I had the luxury of these. I
do ask others around me (friends, family, coworkers) for input on a
lot of items; however, my team is just not yet understood in the
organization.

5. Finally, I agree with the idea of creating a sort of 'standard'
in the community; however, I wonder if this is a realistic goal? This
is not meant to be a cynical perspective as I believe that
foundational efforts and baselines are imperative in setting the
course for long term success. There's nothing worse than spinning
one's wheels over the small things.

What this makes me think of is something I'm continually being asked
by my manager and stakeholders, "Do you have any documented best
practices on X?" And, though I find tons of awesome articles by all
you wonderful people here, what is really desired is a 'checklist'
of best practices.

So, to wrap up a long response... :)... Have I missed a great 'best
practices' library; and, if there isn't really one... is it
realistic to expect that one may be able to be developed and
maintained within the UX community?

Ok. I think I about used up my caffeine for the morning.

Thanks and best to all,
Jennifer
http://gizmodo.com/5389166/how-to-hackintosh-a-dell-mini-10v-into-the-ultimate-snow-leopard-netbook
Or wait for the iTablet/iReader thing for ~$100 more. Either way, it
looks great for granny or the kids but given the financial landscape
and no marketing - a tough sell even if its a fantastic design.

Maybe someone could answer this question. If they've used linux are
the obliged to return Litl's presentation layer back to the
community? That would be very neat.

thanks /pauric
