jack on ubuntu 9.10

Hi all,
I have just upgraded my desktop machine from ubuntu 9.4 to 9.10. Jack used
to run really well under the old version (and the prior one). But with the
new version it runs abysmally, tons of xruns (up to 20ms) and frequent
dropouts, etc. I am also having a similar experience with pulse audio when
I run that.

Has anybody else experienced this ? I am sure it is not my soundcard, this
machine has a pretty nice one which has never given problems like this
before.

Cheers,
Salsaman.

not even mentioning versions, hardware, etc. etc. makes it pretty
difficult to offer any comments at all.

the problems with pulse suggest that its an ALSA driver issue.
wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

As a test try removing your /etc/asound.state file

Several other people have had random strangeness from upgrading to
latest ubuntu and removing the asound.state file seems to fix things.

I'm not gonna comment on the possibility that the ubuntu team have
managed to yet again fsck audio and how this will no doubt cause a large
amount of undeserved traffic on the net about how crappy the Linux Audio
platform is...

Cheers.

I don't have that file, but removing /var/lib/alsa/asound.state did not help.

It's a bit early to tell, but at this point it does seem to pointing
towards ubuntu breakage.

Just a FYI:
linux kernel 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP
jack 0.116.1
libasound 1.0.20
ATI IXP rev 2 with ALC850 Sound Card

jack startup opts:

jackd -Z -d alsa

Gabriel.

Cheers,
Gabriel.

New discovery:
If I add the -s flag (soft mode, no xrun handling), then jack works
perfectly.

Gabriel.
