Anyone have a handle on James Blackwell (are you here James?)?

I tried to contact him about problems with sshing to sourcecontrol.net,
but haven't gotten a response...

Thanks,

-Miles

sourcececontrol.net is probably under the control of Canoncial, not
controlled by James.

jblack@... should be a valid address for him.

Any idea of a good address at canonical to send to?  I tried contacting
the "webmaster" address given on the page itself, but that bounced.

Yeah, that's the address I tried... :-(

Thanks,

No idea.  Probably try to get hold of Robert Collins... even though he
does not give much attention to Arch related things any more.

Right. The policy is that Canonical runs sourcecontrol.net as a legacy
service, but that no company time should be spent on maintaining it.

I am currently the closest thing to a sourcecontrol.net operator. So you
can ask me if you have a problem. I make no promise that I will fix it,
but I will at least have a look.

Note that all of Canonical is currently on leave until next year.

Hi David, thanks for the response.

The basic problem is that I can't login via ssh to
mirrors.sourcecontrol.net (I mainly don't login directly, but rather use
sftp to mirror to my archive on that machine):

   $ ssh mirrors.sourcecontrol.net
ssh: connect to host mirrors.sourcecontrol.net port 22: Connection refused

Given the nature of the error message, I suppose it could be something
as simple as the ssh daemon not running...

I can reproduce the problem, I will ask the sysadmins next week about this.

I am not even sure that Canonical still offers push access to
sourcecontrol.net. When was the last time you were able to push to
mirrors.sourcecontrol.net?

Any bit of information can help.

By the way, it was probably never possible for the public to log in to
this system. At the very least logins were restricted using the
"scponly" shell.

Somewhere around the end of November (I see a commit on 2006-11-20).

I used to login there (e.g. to fix a mistake), though I don't have a
clear memory of when the last time I did so was.

I contacted the sysadmins about this problem, and will keep you informed
of the developments.

It should work now.

I am on vacation next week. So I hope there are no more issues. If there
are, I will only be able to look at them the following week.

Thank you, David, if I may speak for all of us.

Of general interest:

Obviously the I.T. infrastructure of the arch community deserves
some repair -- not just re stuff hosted by Canonical but, in general.
For example, gnuarch.org is also not functioning well, lately.
It certainly isn't fair to Canonical to remain *dependent* on their
(or their employees, or anyone's)
volunteerism and generosity, even if we should perhaps remain
*receptive* to it.   So, perhaps the server glitch that led to this
thread is an occasion to start talking about rationalizing our shared
I.T.

And, in the news: yes, I do actually plan to start releasing
code for Arch 2.0, within some small number of days.  There
won't be enough there, initially, to migrate to but, for what
it's worth, that's coming up and is probably relevant to the I.T.
questions.

My impression is that, at this point, the Arch community
(as represented by, say, this mailing list) has dwindled down
to just a small core of lurkers, the intellectually interested,
downstream package maintainers, and a very small number of
users.   A sort of "embers" of the former situation.

That's a great situation to be in, in the sense that there's
a lot of freedom to do things like reform the I.T. infrastructure
or review the priorities of "the project" etc.

I hope that, collectively, we can design a paradigm of
how public, open source projects should work.  The stakes
are low, regarding Arch, and the opportunity great: so
the potential for fun is substantial.

Indeed it now works.  Thanks greatly for looking into it!

I guess I should try to find a more proper mirroring site, but I've not
seen anything else really.  [sv.gnu.org is decent and has arch support
except that it's project-oriented, and it's nice to have a place to put
non-categorized stuff.]

Thanks,

So what sort of design did you end up with?  My impression from before
is that it was roughly going to be sort of a mix of a vaguely git-ish
low-level with a more arch-ish user layer on top of it?

[That would be cool ... I'm a big fan of git's basic design, and the
fact that every operation is mind-blowingly fast is a rather nice change
from arch (where everything is .... slow), but when I've tried to set it
up to my own preferences, I could never quite get it to do the right
thing...  I think git is a great advance, but there's a lot that still
needs to be worked out.]

It will take a while to fully explain, really, but yes -- your impression
is still correct, as far as it goes.

This is great news!! I've been a tla user for a while now,
even if I never wrote on this mailing list... and I'm quite
happy to hear there will be an arch 2.0.

Thanks!
