This is a full-time contract position through June 30, 2007, with the possibility of extension. The incumbent will work with the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program (NHESP) in the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) to prepare "conservation management practices" (CMP) documents for selected wildlife species that are listed under the MA Endangered Species Act in order to protect their populations; maintain their habitat for long-term viability; while at the same time maintaining the opportunity to sustainably manage forests. Specifically, "conservation management practices" documents will be prepared by NHESP for at least five rare species or species groups with funding from, and in collaboration with, DFW's Forestry Program and the Department of Conservation and Recreation's (DCR) Division of Water Supply Protection and Bureau of Forestry. The successful applicant will research, draft, and produce "conservation management practices" (CMPs) documents for species, or groups of species, that describe how to minimize the potential impacts of forestry activities on species listed under, and protected by, the MA Endangered Species Act (MESA). Developing CMPs will benefit both rare species and forest management by 1) having the most recent scientific studies guide NHESP?s review of projects involving the harvest of forest products, 2) improving the consistency and timeliness of the reviews for many species, 3) providing the natural resources and forestry community with more predictable results of FCP reviews by NHESP, and 4) providing guidance for the planning and harvesting of forest products.
