karmic koala audio problems

I just upgraded my trusty thinkpad X301 to Karmic Koala -- and found
that audio died, and everything else (e.g. web browsing) slowed down
to a crawl, presumably while Gnome tries to recover it.

There's quite a bit of discussion in the usual ubuntu forums about
changes in Koala, but this seems specific to the Thinkpad: my desktop
is running fine under it (with sound).

When I say "audio died", I mean I can't get a peep out of it, and even
the "Sound" menu item on System->Preferences is awol.

Anyone else hit this?

I would bet 6 weeks of being forced to run /that/ OS it's Pulseaudio.
Which should be called problem-audio. Dump it. Or imho, dump them both. :)
