November 3rd, 2009. Like a Suisse clockwork, every month the KDE team brings you a
new release. November's edition of KDE is a bugfix and translation update to KDE 4.3.
With the KDE 4 series picking up in popularity again after a dent that came with KDE
4.0, we're happy to encourage even more people to give KDE 4 another spin -- or just
upgrade your existing KDE to KDE 4.3.3. As the release only contains well-assorted
bugfixes and translation updates, it should be a safe and pleasant update for
everyone. For those using a non-english translation of KDE, the translations to more
than 50 languages are now again more complete.

KDE 4.3.3 has a number of improvements that will make your life this tiny bit better.
Some of KWin's effects have been smoothened and freed of visual glitches, Juk should
now be more stable, KDE PIM has seen its share of improvements while in the back-
rooms of KDE, the developers are working hard on porting all applications to the new
Akonadi storage and cache. The changelog has more, if not exhaustive, lists of the
improvements since KDE 4.3.2.

October 6th, 2009. Another month has passed since the release of KDE 4.3.0, so today
the KDE Community announces the immediate availability of KDE 4.3.2, a bugfix,
translation and maintenance update for the latest generation of the most advanced and
powerful free desktop. KDE 4.3.2 is a monthly update to KDE 4.3. It ships with a
desktop workspace and many cross-platform applications such as administration
programs, network tools, educational applications, utilities, multimedia software,
games, artwork, development tools and more. KDE's award-winning tools and
applications are available in more than 50 languages.
Enhancements

KDE 4.3.2 brings a nice numer of bugfixes, some critical, some just fixing small
annoyances:

* Many crashers have been fixed in KDE's core libraries, bringing more stability
to all applications
* KWin's window compositing effects have been further stabilized by fixing a
number of bugs in effect plugins such as the famous coverswitch window switcher
* The biggest number of bugs for this release has been fixed in KMail, KDE's
email client, making it more reliable and usable by correcting a number of
display issues
* Saving files over themselves works again in Okular, KDE's document viewer

As usual, the changelog provides more -- if not exhaustive -- information about
improvements in KDE 4.3.2. The KDE team recommends KDE 4.3.2 for everyone running an
earlier version of KDE.

KDE 4.3 (Codename: "Caizen") Delivers Incremental Innovations to the Free Desktop
Users and Software Developers

4 August, 2009. The KDE Community today announces the immediate availability of
"Caizen", (a.k.a KDE 4.3), bringing many improvements to the user experience and
development platform. KDE 4.3 continues to refine the unique features brought in
previous releases while bringing new innovations. With the 4.2 release aimed at the
majority of end users, KDE 4.3 offers a more stable and complete product for the home
and small office.

The KDE community has fixed over 10,000 bugs and implemented almost 2,000 feature
requests in the last 6 months. Close to 63,000 changes were checked in by a little

KDE 4.3 RC3 Released

Even in the hot phase up to KDE 4.3.0, there have been quite a bunch of fixes
to KDE's 4.3 branch. The KDE Release Team has decided to err on the safe side
and do another release candidate before KDE 4.3.0 comes out. Dirk Müller has
rolled tarballs of the current state of KDE 4.3 and put them up for testers,
packages for some distributions are already under way. This also means that
the release of KDE 4.3.0 has been postponed for one week. The new planned
release date is August, 4th 2009.

One notable change since RC2 is a performance fix for Plasma's caching of
rendered SVG graphics that lead to the applet being frozen for a short while
after resizing it. A regression that cropped up after RC2, and which resulted
in HTTP redirects being broken has been fixed in RC3 as well.

Please give this KDE 4.3 RC3 some good testing to make sure KDE 4.3.0 will be
as flawless as possible.

Vibrant Community Propels KDE Forward at Akademy 2009

Akademy 2009 was held as part of the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit in Las Palmas
de Gran Canaria last week. During the week the KDE community attended
conference presentations and was engaged in meetings, informal discussions and
of course a great deal of coding. This article provides an overview of what's
happening in the KDE universe and what can be expected for the future.

The KDE development platform gains support by Maemo's announcement to include
Qt as supported platform in its next release. The semantic desktop gained
traction with wider adoption of its underlying infrastructure. The Plasma team
showed their upcoming netbook interface; a first version is expected to be
available in the first quarter of next year. Cornelius Schumacher reports that
KDE e.V., the organization behind KDE, is healthily growing and new projects
to grow KDE's developer base and industry adoption are being spawned. A shift
to next generation code hosting using the version control system git and its
web interface Gitorious was announced, creating a way for more people to
contribute to KDE in the future.

KDE 4.3.0 Release Candidate Is Out

July 1st, 2009. The KDE Community today announced the immediate availability
of KDE 4.3 RC1, a release candidate of the 3rd iteration over the KDE 4
desktop, applications and development platform.

KDE 4.3 focuses on polishing and completing the user experience by providing a
modern and beautiful Free working environment. Compared to the Beta releases,
this release candidate now contains the new Air theme, which will be the
default for KDE 4.3.0. Air is a theme lighter than Oxygen, which ist still
available as an option through the "Desktop Settings" dialog.

KDE's award-winning tools and applications are available in more than 50
languages. After the second beta, the focus is now on ironing out the last
problems with KDE 4.3.0, to be released at the end of this month.

that there is a lot of testing and fixing going on.

KDE 4.2.3 released

The KDE community is happy to announce the release of KDE 4.2.3,
codename Cuagmire.
This service update brings bugfixes, performance improvements and
updated translations, but no new features in order to minimize the
risk of regressions. KDE 4.2.3 is a recommended upgrade for everybody
currently running KDE 4.2.2 or earlier. The details of this release

The KDE community has made available two new releases of the KDE desktop and
applications today.

* KDE 4.1.4 is the latest update for the KDE 4.1 series. It contains many
bugfixes, mainly in the e-mail and PIM suite Kontact and the document

KDE 4.2 Beta 2 Released

December 18, 2008. The KDE Community today announced the immediate
availability of "Canaria", (a.k.a KDE 4.2 Beta 2), the second testing release
of the new KDE 4.2 desktop. Canaria is aimed at testers and reviewers. It
should provide a solid ground to report bugs that need to be tackled before
KDE 4.2.0 is released. Reviewers can use this beta to get a first look at the
upcoming KDE 4.2 desktop which provides significant improvements all over the
desktop and applications.

Since the first beta, which was released less than 4 weeks ago, 1665 bugs new
bugs have been opened, and 2243 bugs have been closed. Since the release of
KDE 4.1.0, more than ten thousand bugs were closed, showing a massive focus on
stability in the upcoming KDE 4.2.0 which will be released in January 2009, 6
months after KDE 4.1. KDE 4.2.0 will be followed up by a series of monthly
service updates and followed up by KDE 4.3.0 in summer 2009.

KDE Launches User Forum

KDE Community Launches Web-based Bulletin Board Using MyBB

The KDE Community today launches the new KDE Forum. The new forum uses the
bulletin board software MyBB offering users, developers and people interested
in KDE a place to help each other, discuss KDE-related topics and exchange
ideas. The KDE Forum complements KDE's UserBase, the home for KDE users as a
valuable support resource.

In collaboration with KDE, the developers behind MyBB have decided to release
their forum software under the terms of the GPL Version 3. Chris Boulton,
project manager at the MyBB Group "The KDE forum guys have come to us with the
wish to use their forum software. In this process, we needed to clear out our
licensing, also to make it easier for the KDE community to leverage MyBB. As a
result of that, we release the MyBB forum now under the terms of the GPL. This
was very well-received by the community around MyBB" Entirely in the spirit of
Free Software, the KDE Forum team has already contributed a number of plugins
for MyBB, supporting the decision taken by the MyBB team.
Rob la Lau, adds "We've chosen MyBB as it stands out head and shoulders above
other candidates we have considered to adopt for the new KDE Forums. We know
that a good piece of software makes a lot of difference to the user, after all
we want to create a nice place for everybody to chat about KDE and related
questions."

Sebastian Kügler, member of the KDE e.V. Board of Directors explains where
the new KDE Forum fits into KDE communication infrastructure: "We've come to
believe that mailinglist don't cut it for all users. KDE becoming increasingly
widely used should also offer those that aren't familiar with the use of email

Enhancements

As a service release, the changelog contains a list of bugfixes and

KDE 3.5.10 Updates Kicker and KPDF

KDE 3.5.10 features translations in 65 languages, improvements to KPDF and
Kicker, the KDE3 Panel.

August 26th, 2008 . The KDE Community today announced the immediate
availability of KDE 3.5.10, a maintenance release for the latest generation of
the most advanced and powerful free desktop for GNU/Linux and other UNIXes.
KDE 3.5.10 sports changes in Kicker, the KDE3 panel and KPDF, the PDF viewer.
The KDE community has finalized yet another update to the 3.5 series. While
not a very exciting release in terms of features, 3.5.10 brings a couple of
nice bugfixes and translation updates to those who choose to stay with KDE
3.5. The fixes are thinly spread across KPDF with a number of crash fixes,
KGPG and probably most interesting various fixes in kicker, KDE3's panel:

* Improved visibility on transparent backgrounds
* Themed arrow buttons in applets that were missing them
* Layout and antialiasing fixes in various applets

Note, as with every release, the changelog is not complete as our developers
often forget to document their work. For users of KDE 3.5.9 it should be low-
risk to upgrade to KDE 3.5.10 since the rules of what is to enter the KDE 3.5
branch are pretty strict at that point, it's in maintenance only mode.

KDE 4.1 released

KDE Releases Improved Desktop and Applications Dedicated to Uwe Thiem

July 29, 2008. The KDE Community today released KDE 4.1.0. This release is the
second feature release of the KDE 4 series, sporting new applications and
newly developed features on top of the Pillars of KDE4. KDE 4.1 is the first
KDE4 release to contain the Personal Information Management suite KDE-PIM with
its E-Mail client KMail, the planner KOrganizer, Akregator, the RSS feed
reader, KNode, the newsgroup reader and many more components integrated into
the Kontact shell. Furthermore, the new desktop shell Plasma, introduced in
KDE 4.0, has matured to the point where it can replace the KDE 3 shell for
most casual users. Like with our previous release much time has been devoted
to improving the framework and underlying libraries on which KDE is built.
Dirk Müller, one of KDE's release managers gives numbers: "There have been
20803 commits made from KDE 4.0 to KDE 4.1 along with 15432 translation
checkins. Almost 35000 commits have been done in work branches, some of them
also being merged into KDE 4.1, so those were not even counted." Müller also
tells us that KDE's sysadmin team has created 166 new accounts for developers
on KDE's SVN server.

sessions have been held and squashed bugs in the beta software. While there
are still bugs left that need to be fixed until the release, KDE 4.1 Beta2
shapes up nicely. Testing and feedback on this release is appreciated and
needed to make KDE 4.1 a splash.

KDE 3.5.9 Brings New Enterprise Email and Calendaring Features

February 19th, 2008 (The INTERNET). The KDE Community today announced the
immediate availability of KDE 3.5.9, a maintenance release for the latest
generation of the most advanced and powerful free desktop for GNU/Linux and
other UNIXes. The most important changes have been made to the KDE-PIM
applications, including the KMail email client, KOrganizer, a planning
application and other components.

The KDE-PIM enterprise branch, that has already been shipped by some
distributions has found its way into the stable branch of KDE. While KDE 3
has been in bugfix mode for quite a while now, the Release Team has decided
to merge the enterprise branch and release it as KDE-PIM proper in 3.5.9
since no regressions are known and it makes packagers' lives easier.

New features and bugfixes in this branch include, but are not limited to:

* A Favorite email folders view in KMail, as well as drag and drop support
for folders
* Easier scheduling in KOrganizer through various improvements in the user

KDE 4.0 Released

The KDE Community is thrilled to announce the immediate availability of KDE
4.0. This significant release marks both the end of the long and intensive
development cycle leading up to KDE 4.0 and the beginning of the KDE 4 era.

The KDE 4 Libraries have seen major improvements in almost all areas. The
Phonon multimedia framework provides platform independent multimedia support
to all KDE applications, the Solid hardware integration framework makes
interacting with (removable) devices easier and provides tools for better
powermanagement.

The KDE 4 Desktop has gained some major new capabilities. The Plasma desktop
shell offers a new desktop interface, including panel, menu and widgets on
the desktop as well as a dashboard function. KWin, the KDE Window manager,
now supports advanced graphical effects to ease interaction with your
windows.

Lots of KDE Applications have seen improvements as well. Visual updates
through vector-based artwork, changes in the underlying libraries, user
interface enhancements, new features, even new applications -- you name it,
KDE 4.0 has it. Okular, the new document viewer and Dolphin, the new
filemanager are only two applications that leverage KDE 4.0's new
technologies.

The Oxygen Artwork team provides a breath of fresh air on the desktop. Nearly
all user-visible parts of the KDE desktop and applications have been given a
facelift. Beauty and consistency are two of the basic concepts behind Oxygen.

KDE 4.0-rc2 released

The KDE Community is happy to announce the immediate availability of the
second release candidate for KDE 4.0. This release candidate marks the last
mile on the road to KDE 4.0.

While progress on the quality and completeness of what is to become the KDE
4.0 desktop has been great, the KDE Community decided to have another release
candidate before releasing KDE 4.0 on January, 11th. The codebase is now
feature-complete. Some work is still being done to put the icing on the KDE
4.0 cake. This includes fixing some major and minor bugs, finishing off
artwork and smoothening out the user experience.

KDE 4.0 Beta 4 and Development Platform RC1 Released

The KDE Community is happy to release the fourth Beta for KDE 4.0. This Beta
aimed at further polishing of the KDE codebase and we would love to start
receiving feedback from testers. At the same time, a Release Candidate for
the KDE 4.0 Development Platform is released. This Development Platform
contains the bits and pieces needed to run and build applications using KDE 4
technology. The purpose of this Development Platform is to make it easier for
third parties to port their applications to KDE 4, without having to wait
until the full desktop is polished enough for the final 4.0 release.

As KDE has largely has been in bugfix mode, this last beta aims to encourage
testers to have a look at KDE 4 to help us find and solve the remaining
problems and bugs. Besides the stabilization of the codebase, some minor
features have been added, including but not limited to much work on Plasma.
Sebastian Kügler notes: "The improvements have been huge, and plasma is much
closer to what it needs to be before the release. I am confident we will be
able to finish it and present a very usable plasma to the users with KDE
4.0".
