Icon sizes in .theme files

Hi,

Icon themes announce the available sizes for the individual categories in the
.theme files. For example, Oxygen has:

DesktopDefault=48
DesktopSizes=16,22,32,48,64,128,256
ToolbarDefault=22
ToolbarSizes=16,22,32,48
MainToolbarDefault=22
MainToolbarSizes=16,22,32,48
SmallDefault=16
SmallSizes=16,22
PanelDefault=32
PanelSizes=16,22,32,48,64,128,256

I would like the following two changes be done to the individual icon themes,
if possible:

+DialogSizes=16,22,32,48,64,128,256

The reason is that KDE Workspace 4.4 supports a new icon category ("Dialog"),
which is used for "large" icons in dialogs (such as icons above the label in
settings dialogs), in contrast to "small" icons, which are usually used next
to the label text. I currently have to work around this by simply using
"DesktopSizes" as the available list of sizes for dialog icons.

-SmallSizes=16,22
+SmallSizes=16,22,32,48

Newer displays might have very high DPI (above 200), and being restricted to
just 22 pixel size might be too limiting. I looked at the coverage of icons in
Oxygen theme, and it looks like nearly all of them are available in 16,22,32,
and also 48 size. KDE Workspace 4.4 allows the user to specify the icon size
used for small icons (it did allow this before, but this rarely worked).

It would be nice if the .theme files could be changed to reflect the available
sizes and categories.

Custom document icon draft

Hi there,

I got tired of opening my freshly compiled koffice and having everything look beautiful except one unfinished icon. So, I thought I'd try making an icon for it, using pre-existing oxygen icons.

Feedback?

Big thanks, Lee :)

I've pushed the new SVGs to our Git master repo, so that the rest of
the team gets a chance to judge them too. I'll try to gather some
comments from the others, then I can give you some feedback.

Amarok toolbar buttons

Hey all,

I have a request for a little bit of help (it's not a big task). Story is:

For Amarok 2.2.1, Lee Olson had created some new main toolbar buttons
(Previous, Play, Stop, Next) for Amarok. These buttons are nice, but
they have a slightly "dirty" (or muddy) appearance, due to (what I
think) a little overuse of lens-flare effects. See attached file for a
screenshot of the buttons.

Now my question: Could anyone here help us with refining these buttons
slightly? I don't mean a complete redesign, but just making them look
a bit less fuzzy. You can find the buttons here in our theme file:

Keep in sync with recent font size changes

Not sure if/where the font size changes are discussed, but I think
making the default size smaller is dangerous; I am thinking about
a 15" screen with only 800x600 resolution, but am too lazy right
now to do the math...

Since I am not in the position to decide, I will commit this in
order to keep the changes in sync with r1049144.

If there is a need to make further changes to kglobalsettings.cpp,
please also change this file.

Yes, I agree with that. However, the original poster wanted the themes
to match.

I guess that I would just like a less "artsy" desktop theme. My
suggestion is really that we should have some sets of the three themes
which match.

OTOH, I have looked into my original issue some more, and it appears
that what I specifically don't like is only one thing and it appears to
be a simple design issue. It appears that the dialogs associated with
the icons in the SystemTray should use the Application theme. This is
(AFAIK) true except for "Notifications and jobs" which uses the Plasma
(DeskTop) theme.

This looks out of place when notifications popup windows appear as the
result of something which you did in an application window. These popup
windows should use the appropriate style. I suppose that that might
mean that a style would need to be selected based on whether the
notification or job was related to an application or the DeskTop.

OTOH, when you do a "job" in a folder view window, the popup window is
the Application style which also doesn't match:

Note that the issue with the screen shot is that there are two popup
windows and they don't use the same style.

This seems to be rather problematic. So, perhaps this needs some thought.

In the meantime, I would suggest that the popup windows for
"Notifications and jobs" use the Application style.

the visual distinction is a purposeful thing indeed and involves more than
just the specifics of the air theme. it draws a clear distinction between the
things that are "part of the system" (desktop shell and window management,
power and network management) and things that are "mine" (applications i

some of the reasoning for the difference, in the first place what you can do
is plasma is not what you can do in qtstyle, they are very difrent in nature.

also the way they are meant to be used is very very different wille plasmoids
are things of occasional use the qt apps are to be used possibly for several
hours. (you would not do a word processor in plasma would you? on the other
end a litle internet tictactoe game might be more interesting in plasma than
in a regular window)

I gess that if we wanted plasma to look like the qt apps we would not need
plasma would we?

way. The point is that a KDE-4 desktop has three different styles:

Application

Window Frame

Plasma (DeskTop)

This is not really new in KDE-4 except that the DeskTop didn't have a
very apparent style.

This is not a good thing. The only way to make the three styles match
is to make a set of matching styles. This was done in KDE-3 for the
Application and Window Frame styles.

I have to say that my complaint is different. I do not like seeing
dialogs pop up with the Plasma style while I have an application open
and the styles don't match at all.

cant say it looks bad but the way styles work in qt make it realy hard to make
that work. its a nice idea...

artists, translators and all the others who have made KDE grow so much in a

few years.

I have a few ideas to make KDE (my friends an my opinion) a little more

beautiful. Unfortunately I'm not a programmer (although I want to learn C++,

but I don't know where to begin, so I have only made a few quick examples

(images). Watch them at http://www.seventho.nl/images/

All plasma widgets are using the theme you have chosen (eg Oxygen or Air etc.).

If you're going to open a program, for example Konqueror or Dolphin, you can

see that the background of the window is gray. (or other colors if you

Well it has been a while since posting to this thread, but actually a
lot of exciting stuff happened "under the hood" so to speak. ;)

In any event, per Kleag's suggestion, I completed an alternate draft
the Ksrik Skin Editor icon this time based on the original Ksirk
cannon (which here is literally having its "skin" changed). Because
the icon mirrors the current Ksirk icon closely, the same design
concepts for the smaller icon sizes (e.g., 16x16's omission of the
cannon balls) would also apply here.

Old sets of Everaldo's Crystal Clear isons

I am again about Everaldo's Crystal Clear icons...

Everaldo does not seems to track changes in his iconset. There is
only fresh version of iconset is available on his site. I've started
incremental mirroring of his download page at
http://shaplov.ru/files/crystal-clear-icons/, but it seems to be too
late, as last update were in June 2007.

If some of you still have some versions of iconset downloaded from
Everaldo.com can you please contact me. I will put there there. Keeping
all available versions in in one place seems to me to be a good idea.

yeah don't put dead lines in those just do as you go the list is very messy
please double check for having them in the oxygen icon set already, as style
goes there is already a couple of drawing icons done so you should be fine.

Alrighty, I've reviewed the lists. ^^b

limit that only to Kaffeine.ods. It only has these three icons
remaining:

video-television-encrypted
audio-radio
audio-radio-encrypted

...and with them out of the way we can close out Kaffeine.ods. ^__^

But after that, I will want to turn my focus to all the Krita icons,
not only because I like the program but also because I want ot learn
more about the newer version. This would be a great opportunity to
take care of various things at once. ^^

I'll highlight these all tonight as you suggested -- that too will be
good practice as far as SVG commits go.

I'll aim to get the Kaffeine ones completed at least by Monday (I will
be doing other things over the weekend), but as I don't know how long
it will take to do the Krita ones, I'll just put a deadline of one
month for now (I hope it will end up being less). ;)

And I noticed some were modified not so long ago, so I guess those
were for the icons you've recently completed.

So for example, in kaffeine.ods, there seems to already be icons for
video-television, but not video-television-encrypted, audio-radio, and
audio-radio-encrypted. So if I started off with these (or other
similar icon lists that are almost complete), then we can sign off on

I'll spend parts of the day going over the lists, seeing where they
should be in the Oxygen directory and making a plan for some
hole-plugging.

But you are right, there are LOTS of icons still left to do. Wow,
it's amazing when you see the list in person.... XD

Are there any other special folders that I should be aware of, besides
playground/artwork/Oxygen/Docs?

Yeah, I checked in the game source directory but no dice. I will have
to put this on hold until I can confirm with Kleag if there is an SVG
version. If there isn't, maybe we can take the opportunity to make
both (ksirk and ksirkskineditor) oxygen icons.

In any event, I'll focus on the missing oxygen icons till then.

If its not in Oxygen svn its probably not an oxygen icon, an you will have to
search it in the games folder i guess not sure, don't think we have a canon
icon dough

I sort of checked high and low, but I can't find the SVG graphic for
the ksirk cannon icon. Is there one or do I have to create a vector

I really need to know to prevent double-work (in case you have it and
just need to send it to me).

Hi! I was originally thinking of doing this as a dismantled cannon --
don't remember why it knocked the idea down, but it could've been to
offer something a little different. :)

Actually, as long as I can dig up the original SVG (I imagine this is
where the Oxygen SVN would comes in), yeah I could definitely give it
a shot! Better yet, instead of the brush painting over the cannon,
how about if the brush is painting a different "skin" over that
cannon? SO instead of looking like standard artillery, the brush is
giving it circus cannon colors. :)

Sure! In fact, I'm still hunting for an up-to-date list of missing
icons, which is why I've been hanging around kde-games for the most
part.

If you can hand me about 5 or so of those icons on your TODO list to
begin with, I can use that as a test to see if I have what it takes.

you can use the brush we use in oxygen, dosent rotate well and probably will
need to be redone but along those lines

super, there si alot more not so fun work to do in oxygen icons if you are up
to it,,, I have a huge list's of todo icons :)

I actually borrowed the brush from Kolourpaint for the abstraction,
but yeah I can definitely create a more realistic brush (with a wooden
handle and metallic brace). That might actually be a better way to go
just to add more color diversity.

Although I mainly used the Ksirk icon as reference, I did notice quite
a few Oxygen icons use a top-front perspective (e.g., KGet, Knetwalk,
Killbots). So I can try reworking this to display the same way (the
cap portion is almost there, so I just have to focus on fixing the
top).

One question, though.... where is the path for the Oxygen icons in SVN? ^^'

If memory serves, I think I'll be able to produce differently sized
versions of this icon. So for anything below 16x16, I'll likely be
able to thicken the strokes, bolden the shading and/or remove any
details that would interfere with the scaling (such as the light
shadows at the bottom).

could be more natural, apart from that its a great piece of work

Notes about oxygen prospective, oxygen tries a frontal perspective, with not
to much fish eye.
check the oxygen icons in svn to have a look , you will notece that the amount
of fish eye is reduced

well from crystal you wont find alot of stuff, everaldo never released the
source AI files, what you will find is the community stuf but thats not much.

From KDE's svn. I'm not an icon artist; someone else would know more
specifically where than I do, but the Oxygen icons anyway are currently
in kdesupport. (I think Crystal lived in kdebase, but you'll have to go
digging into old revisions, unless they are still around in kdeartwork.)

I believe the best answer is that you have to publish whatever you
modify. So if you take an existing png and paint on it in kolourpaint,
you /might/ be okay publishing just the final png. But if you modify the
original svg, I am pretty sure that makes the svg the "preferred
source", which means you must publish that. Similarly if you use gimp,
then you would need to publish the .xcf with all layers, etc.
