>> Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce the problem on my PC. What
>> versions of KDE and Qt are you using ?
>
> Like I say, trunk. Well, and qt-kde, the stuff you get via git. In
> version numbers it's telling me this for Qt:
> 4.6.0
>
> And this for KDE:
> Platform Version 4.3.82 (KDE 4.3.82 (KDE 4.4 >= 20091211))

Hi Aleix,

>As the KAlgebra maintainer, I would like to see a deeper explanation
>on
how KAlgebra would fit in that project,

Actually, the library would be part of KAlgebra.

>what will the library do?

The library would be used to plot many kinds of functions ...

>What will be the library be built upon? I'd suggest libanalitza.

libanalitza would be a dependency, of course ... ;)

good :)

>That way we could integrate it into KAlgebra. Maybe we could build
kmplot on
>it at some point

I think the best way is to build the library on a branch of KAlgebra ... playground?¿

or /branches? :P

>(or just drop kmplot, which is something
that I'm not sure we want).

My
idea is to avoid doing the same work twice. For example, if KmPlot has
a feature to draw parametric curves, then this feature don't have to be
rewritten by KAlgebra developers.

Well, since we both have different parsers (we support different languages), we can't merge the code itself just like that. Actually I think this library should be a compendium of plotting algorithms which should get the expression and environment values and output lists of polilines.

I can help you creating the abstractions for that (you could use some I already have in KAlgebra for functions and extend it).

I'd suggest libanalitza.
libanalitza would be a dependency, of course ... ;)

>That way we could integrate it into KAlgebra. Maybe we could build
kmplot on
>it at some point
I think the best way is to build the library on a branch of KAlgebra ... playground?¿

>(or just drop kmplot, which is something
that I'm not sure we want).
My
idea is to avoid doing the same work twice. For example, if KmPlot has
a feature to draw parametric curves, then this feature don't have to be
rewritten by KAlgebra developers.

>Well anyway, there's a lot to talk about. You know where to reach me. :)

ok ... sending the ping request ... :P

Cheers,
Percy

>There are a lot of function plotters to generate better curves, but none
Definitely, this have to be taken as a feature, either in the scope of application (KAlgebra) or in the scope of the library.

Percy

>
> I'm going with trunk. I suppose I might give it a go on openSUSE as
> opposed to Fedora just to see where that gets me.
>
>> How have you found that the problem is in Number::floatValue() ? Is it
>> crashed inside that function ?
>> If so, it might be caused also by wrong arguments passed to that
>> function, or by previous memory corruption.
>
> Well, it goes UnitsCalc::parseNumber() -> Number::floatValue() ->
> cln::double_approx(). So I guess the problem is potentially in cln. But
> like I say, I copied the code over almost verbatim to my test app and the
> test app runs fine, so I'm pretty sure it's not wrong arguments being
> passed. In fact I'm spitting out debug statements in both the real code
> and the test code and the contents of all the variables seem to match
> exactly. Even the type of the expr MathStructure.
>
> Would valgrind be the thing to go with to check for previous memory

Hello everyone, first of all, I like to apologize for not being able to coordinate -on time- the integration between KAlgebra and KmPlot (http://community.kde.org/KDEEdu/Meeting20091119IRC#Action_to_be_taken)

I've been working lately on the subject and I think that the best way to achieve a correct integration is through the creation of a library. The library would have the functionality to draw functions. The library would consist of:
1. The code that have to be reused (from KmPlot and/or KAlgebra)
2. Improved charting methods for certain types of functions, for example:
http://picasaweb.google.com/percy.camilo.ta/Prototypes#5372699016203439730
3. New charting methods.

The features of the library for plotting curves will be:
1. [2D] Explicit functions (already in KmPlot and KAlgebra)
2. [2D] Explicit functions in polar coordinates (already in KmPlot and KAlgebra)
3. [2D] Implicit functions (already in KmPlot, but can be improved)
4. [2D] Parametric curves (already in KmPlot recently in KAlgebra)
5. [3D] Parametric curves (not implemented)

The features of the library for plotting surfaces will be:
1. Explicit functions in Cartesian coordinates (already in KAlgebra)
2. Explicit functions in spherical and cylindrical coordinates (not implemented)
3. Parametric surfaces (not implemented)
4. Implicit surfaces (not implemented)

Finally, the library would be responsible for managing all the graphics
with a widget that has the thumbnails of each graph ... a proposal of
the concept:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkdRKTyLyxM
This widget would be a tab inside KAlgebra ...

The idea of having a library is that in the future (>> KDE 4.5) we can customize/add features (eg draw vector fields, draw fractal curves, have some scripting system, etc). This is the proposal, I would be happy to hear some comments ;)

Cheers,
Percy

As the KAlgebra maintainer, I would like to see a deeper explanation on how KAlgebra would fit in that project, what will the library do? What will be the library be built upon? I'd suggest libanalitza. That way we could integrate it into KAlgebra. Maybe we could build kmplot on it at some point (or just drop kmplot, which is something that I'm not sure we want).

Well anyway, there's a lot to talk about. You know where to reach me. :)

Aleix

Anyhow, I threw in some debugging statements and ran step under gdb and it
appears that libqalculate's Number::floatValue() method is the culprit.

In an effort to try and further isolate the problem I for the most part
copied over verbatim Step's UnitsCalc::parseNumber() method to a
simplified stand alone C++ application. Yet when I run this simplified
application I get no crash. Number::floatValue() works just fine.

So now I'm completely at a loss. Does cmake do something odd with regards
to floating point variables that I'm unaware of? And can anyone give me
any advice on how to proceed debugging Step at this point?

Thanks,

one of the most important feature of KmPlot is (was) the constraint
scaling of the axis for printing so that the tics' distance is an easy

Cheers,
Percy

meeting but this is just impossible for me to organize.
What we'll have: our own room with internet and I can bring a beamer.
What we'll share: meals (at the house itself, we'll take turns to help make
them) We can walk and have fun with others as well but we can stick more to
ourselves if we want.

The meeting will happen on several days but if you can only make it for the
week-end, it's already fine and we'll set up agenda accordingly.
If you'd like to bring kids/babies and family there's room for them as well
and it's a lovely location with pure air!

http://www.hausranda.ch/ for the accomodation

The doodle link is there:
http://www.doodle.com/7dahwb5ssndrwaxz

The dates will be decided next week so please have your say before that!

Marble people, are you interested? Do my mails hit your list or not? KStars
people?
This is a great opportunity to try to give a new impluse to KDE-Edu and
distance is not a barrier!

New people: if you think about getting involved in KDE-Edu one way or another
(testing, designing, promoting, documenting, ...) (there are many areas where
we lack people and that are not development!) please come forward and such a
meeting will get you started very nicely.

Best regards,

Anne-Marie

Hi Andreas,
I like the idea, thanks for the mockup - that always helps a lot in
understanding things :)

The idea would require to enable scripts to control more things in the app,
which is not necessarily a bad idea, it's just not currently possible.
This project is a bit bigger.
I won't really get around to working much on Parley until the end of the year
holidays, it would be great if you could file a feature request on bug.kde.org
so it doesn't get forgotten. You can simply link to the opendesktop page you
created.

Thanks
