Hello Bart,

Last year, you guys had 2 tables in front of the KDE devroom. Amarok was
there with a large presence too.

What I want to ask: we received word from the MirBSD people (whom were
next to you) that that spot between the entrance door and the Janson
passage was a bit uncomfortable: there was cold air flowing between the
door and that passage.

Can you ask the people that manned the stand wether they also suffered
from it ?

Hi,

attached is the CfP for the Chemnitzer Linux Tage 2010 (which is written in
German, I recieved it over the mailing list of my Linux User Group).

1. The CfP says that the organisers want to put (among other things) an
emphasis on "new desktops" and "embedded systems". This might be a great
opportunity to present our efforts on the Plasma shells for netbooks and MID.
Is there anyone who is into this topic, speaks German, and would like to
submit a paper for a talk? (I think I won't be doing a talk this time.
February and March will also feature some interesting exams for me.)

2. I'll be applying for the booth later this day. Who will come with me? (They
want information about how many people are at the booth already in the
registration form.)

3. Claudia, could you please reserve the booth box for the 13/14 March 2010?

Der Call for Lectures sowie der Call for Presentations für die am 13. und
14. März 2010 stattfindenden Chemnitzer Linux-Tage wurden eröffnet.
Gefragt sind dieses Mal Beiträge zu den Themenschwerpunkten "Dienste und
Dämonen", "Neue Desktops", "Embedded" und "Privatsphäre trotz Netz". Auch
das beliebte Einsteigerforum wird den "Neulingen" wieder in gewohnter
Weise die Welt von Open-Source und Co. in leicht verständlichen Vorträgen
näher bringen.

"Dienste und Dämonen" sucht Vorträge und Präsentationen rund um neue
Protokolle und ihre Implementierungen. Dies umfasst sowohl daraus
resultierende Anwendungen als auch Geschäftsmodelle.

Aktuelle Entwicklungen zeigen, dass immer mehr Open-Source-Anwendungen auf
immer unterschiedlicheren Geräten zum Einsatz kommen. Um den Entwurf, die
Entwicklung und die Herstellung solcher Geräte auf Basis von freier
Software geht es im Bereich "Embedded".

Die Anforderungen an Benutzeroberflächen von Seiten der Anwendergemeinde
ist in den vergangenen Jahren stetig gewachsen. So sollen zum Beispiel
nicht nur persönliche Sachen wie anstehende Termine und Kontakte auf einen
Blick erkennbar sein. Auch das Verlangen nach einer einfachen und
intuitiven Bedienung wird immer größer. Im vergangenen Jahr machte hier
zum Beispiel die Android-Software aus dem Hause Google und die
Moblin-Oberfläche aus dem Hause Intel von sich reden. Im Rahmen "Neue
Desktops" sollen neu Entwicklungen und Trends in diesem Bereich
vorgestellt und diskutiert werden.

Über Gefahren und Risiken im Umgang mit Daten klären Vorträge oder
Workshops aus dem Bereich "Privatsphäre trotz Netz" auf. Hierbei sind
sowohl technische Möglichkeiten zum Schutz als auch rechtliche Aspekte
gefragt.

Im Rahmen des Call for Presentations werden Open-Source-Projekte und
Unternehmen angesprochen, die eine Plattform zur Präsentation ihrer
Arbeit, Projekte und Produkte suchen.

Als ein Novum der Chemnitzer Linux-Tage 2010 bieten wir für Referenten von
Vorträgen und Workshops die Möglichkeit der Veröffentlichung in unserem
Tagungsband. Wir bitten in diesem Fall neben dem üblichen Abstract um das
Zusenden eines ausformulierten Papers.

Interessenten können ihre Beiträge bis zum 6. Januar 2010 über
http://chemnitzer.linux-tage.de/ einreichen.

Damit Fans und Intressierte nicht nur am Veranstaltungswochende die
Chemnitzer Linux-Tage live erleben, kann sich ab sofort jeder über den

Planning for the Multimedia Sprint in May 2010

Hi all,

The Amarok team would like to organize a Multimedia sprint in
Switzerland next year and gather all people involved in KDE Multimedia
applications for that sprint.

Since we know the house in Randa will be available in May, we need to
find the exact week.

I prepared a Doodle to find a suitable weekend, the proposed dates are

our booth at BLIT ("Brandenburger Linux-Info-Tag") in Potsdam has been
confirmed. The event is open on 21th November (a Saturday) from 10:00 through

The *Main Tracks* are two simultaneous lectures given in the two biggest
rooms giving a seat to 550 and 1400 visitors. They tend to host lectures for
a broader audience than the specialized Developer Rooms.

.... You can send in your abstract if you meet the following conditions:

* The subject is about free or open source software development.
* The proposed lecture is technical. Our visitors do not come to FOSDEM for
a marketing talk or a simple overview of the features of your product.
* A Main Track talk is given by one person, who is a developer of the
project.
* By sending in your abstract you acknowledge that you keep the dates of 6-7
Feburary 2010 free in case your proposal has been selected.

* The travel expenses and hotel bookings of main track speakers are covered
by FOSDEM. Speakers are kindly asked to book their travel themselves while
FOSDEM manages the hotel. Bringing your partner is encouraged but his/her
costs are not covered by FOSDEM. (except the hotel)
* All Main Track talks will be recorded. The recordings and slides will be
made available freely, shortly after the event.

* You can use your own computer for the presentation if you want, please
warn us in advance if you don't have one.
* The speaker must attend the main track lecture before his, in order to

atoms&bits, a Berlin festival for making, thinking, and doing. We'll
explore how open principles bridge technical and creative fields --

atoms&bits has two parts:
a week long festival
a two-day camp

I'm sorry, but we have the same problem with the booth box as last
year, customs. It would be a) quite pricey to send the box, and b)
difficult to get through customs.

I can send someone who's travelling from Germany t-shirts and
stickers, or post you Myriam shirts and stickers, but I need to know
asap as I will be on holiday the next two weeks.

Die Brandenburger Linux User Group (BraLUG) und die Potsdamer Linux User
Group (upLUG) laden in Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität Potsdam zum 6.
Brandenburger Linux-Infotag ein. Ort des Geschehens wird am Samstag, 21.
November 2009, die Uni Potsdam sein. Das jährliche Linux-Event will
seinen Besuchern einen Einblick in die Welt von Linux und freier
Software bieten. Dafür suchen die Veranstalter noch Unterstützung in
Form interessanter Beiträge. Willkommen sind Vorträge, Workshops oder
repräsentative Stände im Ausstellungsbereich. Ebenso freuen sich Bralug
und upLUG über jede helfende Hand vor Ort.

auch als Sponsor melden. Desweiteren dürft ihr gern Anregungen und

For now use techbase. I need to sort out a few last things with danimo
and get the theme from Emil. We'll announce when community.kde.org is

any news on this? Is there a consensus now about the exact location for Events?

I don't mind moving things around, but we really need a definite
decision where Events should be located, else we will continue to have
it in different pages and the confusion continues :(

I can't remember having seen any meeting or decision about this,
although there was supposed to be a BoF at Akademy (which I certainly
missed, or did it even happen?), so some feedback would really be
welcome!

OpenExpo in WInterthur, September 23+24 2009, update

Hi all,

I registered a KDE and an Amarok booth for the http://openexpo.ch
Event in Winterthur, to be held Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th of
September, at the Eulachhalle in Winterthur, Switzerland (for a map
see also http://tinyurl.com/Eulachhalle). Still waiting for
confirmation, but I am confident about it :)

We definitely need a few more people to help out at the KDE booth (I
can't handle this alone, as I also will be at the Kubuntu booth), Mark
and Sven will man the Amarok booth. If things go well, we should have
both booths next to each other, which will allow us to spread a little
more :)

So please, get in touch with me and tell me if you need accommodation,
too, so we can get things organized! The easiest would be if you put
your name in the wiki on techbase (see link above).

able to attend, canned material (slides, talking points, can't miss

LinuxTag 2009 in Berlin

edition is on June 24-27). We have already registered a booth and the talks
for our track are also already organized.

Liwoli 2009 is a three day long Hacklab and an open invitation to all

their closed source counterparts. Contributions for this section could
deal with this situation in many ways.

Ha, don't even think our comments come even close to some form of
criticism - these booklets are amazing. They're by far the best we
ever had to hand out to people... Sure we can improve on them, but as
usual with this kind of stuff, getting it together in the first place
is the hardest part - and you guys did that. Super-cool!

Of course I am desperate (ahem :D) to get my hands on any kind of
sources and fix and update stuff. I'd love to set up some kind of
yearly cycle where we update those. Or make them more time-enduring by
removing dates and specific versions and adding a separate leaflet
with the more recent stuff, whatever works best. But again, you should
tell those who worked on it we were genuinely impressed with their
work!

Esp considering the time constraints I just read about - if I just
think about how long it took to write and finish the feature guide it
is clear you guys did an amazing job.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I was travelling around the time when
this thread got started. And Real Life kept me busy for even longer. I
saw this thread just now. Actually, I decided to attend a FOSS event
in a neighbouring city yesterday night, and they even accepted my KDE
talk, which I will give in a 30 minutes from now. So I will keep the
mail short now, will come back to it later in the evening.

So, yes the KDE booklet was done by a team of volunteers in India just
before FOSS.IN/2008. We had less than few weeks to put it all
together, including finding a sponsor to get it printed. ( Yes, I
know, I could have asked eV, but getting that kind money here means
somebody would be have to do a lot of TAX math. ) So finding a local
sponsor was the best, and whats better than a old time KDE contributor
coming forward to help us with it.

- yes, some of the material including text and images is dated now. It
was quite recent when it was printed.

- yes, material was "merely" copied from techbase/userbase/pillars
website, and the credits have been given to those.

- we had a very less time window to get it done, and if you have ever
done a 28 page booklet, you will know that it takes time to get
everything done - from conception time to final printing and
transportation ( Ask Adriaan about this ;) . So there was NO time to
contact developers to ask for "most" recent information and then wait
on them for the information then arrange it, then send it to layout
designer and so on. I wanted it done before FOSS.IN/2008, KDE Project
Day.

- I completely agree that including the version release information
and dates was a mistake. But we learn from mistakes.

- I will go back home on Sunday, will contact the printer who did
printing for us. Hopefully he still has the pdf/cdr files. If I get
those, I will upload those and inform the list.

- I have a lot of booklets left, I am passing/sending those around
here in India. I just carried 8 KGs of those to this event ;).
Thankfully, February is a month of events here in India. So I will
make sure the booklets are distributed at most of the events if not
all the events.

- I have spoken to Claudia about this and as she pointed out ( thanks
Claudia ), we are working on it. I can send 1 or 2 boxes ( each has 50

- As Bart suggested, one solution is to get a extra sheet printed with

If someone puts the master version online on a server somewhere, I can have a look at the teksts... But I not alknowing so might need some help in this...

I would group the general KDE-knowledge in the "KDE handbook" (things that stay representative for years) and make seperate leaflets with new "inventions". This way we can have a large amount of the "Handbook" printed and make the smaller leaflets "print on demand".

If there isn't a master version, than we seriously have to start working on a totaly new version...

If they're the same that we saw over at Tokamak, I think we can put some work on
refining the text and/or the artwork. The text in some point was looking quite
outdated (merely copied from KDE 4 pillars' websites) and not very professional.
At least I remember the part about Oxygen which was a bit... well... not very
great. That would mean people to work on texts though, not sure if I can help in
that.

Laser printing.

For color it would be one of the best print quality machines
on the market (Ineo+ 6501, doing 65 ppm on A4).

For b+w it would be one of the best quality machines on the
market (Digimaster 150 EX, doing 150 ppm on A4).

I still do not know how many you'd need.

Hi Kurt,

It is great that you want to print the brochures for free and a laser printer is indeed the best quality on the market for home use.

The printing techniques best for professional look and feel is digital or offset. For a smaller faire laser printed brochures would be perfect, but for CeBit I think we might want to have something with a more professional look and feel...

So what do you think if we look for a professional printing company to have some extra of these brochures?
