Hello Bart,

Last year, you guys had 2 tables in front of the KDE devroom. Amarok was
there with a large presence too.

What I want to ask: we received word from the MirBSD people (whom were
next to you) that that spot between the entrance door and the Janson
passage was a bit uncomfortable: there was cold air flowing between the
door and that passage.

Can you ask the people that manned the stand wether they also suffered
from it ?

Thanks,
Tias

Fwd: Chemnitzer Linux-Tage 2010: "Dienste und Dämonen "

Hi,

attached is the CfP for the Chemnitzer Linux Tage 2010 (which is written in
German, I recieved it over the mailing list of my Linux User Group).

1. The CfP says that the organisers want to put (among other things) an
emphasis on "new desktops" and "embedded systems". This might be a great
opportunity to present our efforts on the Plasma shells for netbooks and MID.
Is there anyone who is into this topic, speaks German, and would like to
submit a paper for a talk? (I think I won't be doing a talk this time.
February and March will also feature some interesting exams for me.)

2. I'll be applying for the booth later this day. Who will come with me? (They
want information about how many people are at the booth already in the
registration form.)

3. Claudia, could you please reserve the booth box for the 13/14 March 2010?

Greetings
Stefan

Der Call for Lectures sowie der Call for Presentations für die am 13. und

http://chemnitzer.linux-tage.de/ einreichen.

>

our booth at BLIT ("Brandenburger Linux-Info-Tag") in Potsdam has been
confirmed. The event is open on 21th November (a Saturday) from 10:00 through
18:00.

My friend Felix and me are organising the booth, and it would be nice if
someone could help us with manpower (esp. because I've registered a speech).
TIA!
Date: Saturday 10 October 2009
From: info@...

The *Main Tracks* are two simultaneous lectures given in the two biggest
rooms giving a seat to 550 and 1400 visitors. They tend to host lectures for
a broader audience than the specialized Developer Rooms.

.... You can send in your abstract if you meet the following conditions:

  * The subject is about free or open source software development.
  * The proposed lecture is technical. Our visitors do not come to FOSDEM for
a marketing talk or a simple overview of the features of your product.
  * A Main Track talk is given by one person, who is a developer of the
    project.
  * By sending in your abstract you acknowledge that you keep the dates of 6-7
Feburary 2010 free in case your proposal has been selected.

  * The travel expenses and hotel bookings of main track speakers are covered
by FOSDEM. Speakers are kindly asked to book their travel themselves while
FOSDEM manages the hotel. Bringing your partner is encouraged but his/her
costs are not covered by FOSDEM. (except the hotel)
  * All Main Track talks will be recorded. The recordings and slides will be
made available freely, shortly after the event.
.... Also note that in order to be granted a Main Track talk, you will have
      to follow these rules:

  * You can use your own computer for the presentation if you want, please
warn us in advance if you don't have one.
  * The speaker must attend the main track lecture before his, in order to
guarantee a smooth switch between speakers.
  * A speaker is given exactly 50 minutes time, include questions and answers.
A moderator will be there showing you signs of 15, 10 and 5 minutes left.
  * You will need to keep proofs of your expenses, reimbursement will be done
    after the event.

If you are interested in doing a Main Track talk, submit the form below !
Good luck in the selection process !
>>> Hi all,
>>>
>>> PS. Claudia, we would need the booth box for that event, ideally it
>>> should arrive a day earlier so I can set up the booth.
>>
>> I'm sorry, but we have the same problem with the booth box as last
>> year, customs. It would be a) quite pricey to send the box, and b)
>> difficult to get through customs.
>>
>> I can send someone who's traveling from Germany t-shirts and
>> stickers, or post you Myriam shirts and stickers, but I need to know
>> asap as I will be on holiday the next two weeks.
>
> Well, the easiest would be then to send me some schwag I can use a the
> booth. I already have quite some Kubuntu CDs to handout, but shirts,
> caps and stickers would be nice to have. If you remember what you sold
> last time, you should be able to estimate what we would need I think.
>
> You can send it to me directly:
>
> Myriam Schweingruber
> Hauptstrasse 115
> 1715 Alterswil

Great, will do that tomorrow, so it gets to you on time :).

>
> I also suggest that I keep stuff I don't sell for the next openexpo in
> Bern, which will be in March or April 2010 anyway.

Good idea!

> Just don't forget
> to tell me the prices I should sell the things :) I guess I send the
> money to the e.V. account, right?

Yep :).

> I have a 15.4" laptop with a very high resolution which we can also
> use for demo purposes, and we can also take markey's 17" screen from
> home to use at the booth.
Fantastic. Thanks for organizing this!

Dear lovers of openness and friends of creative critique,

The openeverything team cordially invites you to join us at
atoms&bits, a Berlin festival for making, thinking, and doing. We'll
explore how open principles bridge technical and creative fields --
and how these ideas shape the atoms & bits that make up our lives.

atoms&bits has two parts:
a week long festival
a two-day camp

*.*.*.*.*.*
a&b camp
*.*.*.*.*.*

At the a&b camp, we're bringing together a heap of interesting people
to come and play by the Barcamp rules. That means the program hasn't
set yet. Instead, the discussions be steered on location by
participants -- by you! Sessions can be held on any topic that relates
to openness, from software to spleens, from genes to geodata.

Ideas include:

> Hi all,
>
> I registered a KDE and an Amarok booth for the http://openexpo.ch
> Event in Winterthur, to be held Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th of
> September, at the Eulachhalle in Winterthur, Switzerland (for a map
> see also http://tinyurl.com/Eulachhalle). Still waiting for
> confirmation, but I am confident about it :)
>
> The event is in our wiki here:
>
> We definitely need a few more people to help out at the KDE booth (I
> can't handle this alone, as I also will be at the Kubuntu booth), Mark
> and Sven will man the Amarok booth. If things go well, we should have
> both booths next to each other, which will allow us to spread a little
> more :)
>
> So please, get in touch with me and tell me if you need accommodation,
> too, so we can get things organized! The easiest would be if you put
> your name in the wiki on techbase (see link above).
>
> Hope to see you in Winterthur!
>
>
> Regards, Myriam
>
> PS. Claudia, we would need the booth box for that event, ideally it
> should arrive a day earlier so I can set up the booth.

I'm sorry, but we have the same problem with the booth box as last
year, customs. It would be a) quite pricey to send the box, and b)
difficult to get through customs.

I can send someone who's travelling from Germany t-shirts and
stickers, or post you Myriam shirts and stickers, but I need to know
asap as I will be on holiday the next two weeks.

Hi All,

any news on this? Is there a consensus now about the exact location for Events?

I don't mind moving things around, but we really need a definite
decision where Events should be located, else we will continue to have
it in different pages and the confusion continues :(

I can't remember having seen any meeting or decision about this,
although there was supposed to be a BoF at Akademy (which I certainly
missed, or did it even happen?), so some feedback would really be
welcome!

PS. Why do we have different mailing lists for promo and for events? I
must have missed something else here, too
>>
>> I put in a placeholder which can be filled with content on the go. :)
>
> Ok, I put in some stuff there, but basically there is a big mismatch
> on where things should be put apparently:
>
> LinuxTag2009 in Berlin is listed here:
>
> http://techbase.kde.org/Events/Linuxtag/2009
>
> OpenExpo Winterthur 2009 is listed here:
>
> http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Promo/conferenceseu
>
> That makes absolutely no sense at all, as both are conferences with
> talks & booths, so they should be at the same place.
>
> And IIRC there is also a wiki lying somewhere with event entries. Oh,
> and didn't we also have a spread.kde.org? What difference is that
> again? Not promo but marketing but not events or conferences? Why does
> everything have to be in so many different places? It's a bit as if
> every time something comes up we discover a new place where to put
> stuff. It's totally confusing IMHO, and I'm sure not only for me.
>
> Proposition:
>
> Could we have a plan where to put things? We should clearly state
>
> * what is deprecated and should not be used anymore (and should be
> locked then to deny anybody adding new things)
>
> * have one single place for all the marketing, and IMO events, and
> talks and booth and merchandise should all go in the same place. There
> still is possibility to make sub-pages, so a proposition could be:
>
> spread.kde.org:
> - Events (where we still can make a distinction between types of
> events if really necessary, like Dev conferences or General Public
> events (CeBIT for example)
> - Booth (logically a sub-page of events, as these booths are always
> in relation to some event)
> - Talks (given during events, with links tot the slides, docu, etc.)
> - Marketing (which again needs a tad more clarification on what has to
> go in there and why it is called Promo elsewhere)
> - Merchandise (which will certainly have to be somewhere, too, and as
> it is used in conjunction with events and booths...)
>
> I'm willing to give a hand to clear that up, but with help and a clear
> line on what goes where. And a list of all things lying around
> somewhere that should go elsewhere since ages, etc.
>
> Hope this doesn't come over too much as a rant (which it is, in a way,
> ..) but today I had to make corrections on two events and got confused
> over that.
>
> If, on the contrary there already *is* such a plan and I am just not
> well informed, please disregard this mail. But since I am on this list
> (about a year now) the events/booth/conference pages have changed at
> least 4 times in four different locations and its really not easy to
> find a way through all this.
>
>
> Regards, Myriam.
>

The event is in our wiki here:
http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/Promo/conferenceseu#OpenExpo_Winterthur

PPS. Lydia, do we have a new Amarok poster, yet?
> still is possibility to make sub-pages, so a proposition could be:
>
> spread.kde.org:
>
>
>
>
>
>
> PS. Is there a map of the webpages available that could help sorting a little?
>
> Dear KDE,
>
> someone who will be passing through Pittsburgh, PA some other time
> this summer, please let us know so that we can set something up.
> Since we are a general user group, a general user 50 minute
> presentation since the majority of the audience will be non-developers
> (what is so great about KDE4, a demo on what you can do with KDE, and
> how to get involved.) If you do not have anyone from your project who
> able to attend, canned material (slides, talking points, can't miss
> demo features) of this nature would be greatly appreciated so that we
> can find a local KDE fan to speak.

Hello everybody,

As usual KDE is going to be present at LinuxTag in Berlin (this year's
edition is on June 24-27). We have already registered a booth and the talks
for our track are also already organized.

I'll be managing this year's booth and I am looking for helping hands.
If you'd like to have some great fun and help out, even just for a day or
two, add yourself to the staff list at
If you need accommodation in Berlin make sure that you mention that as well.

Liwoli 2009
hacklab for art and open source
23 - 26 April 2009 - Kunstuniversität Linz

Liwoli 2009 is a three day long Hacklab and an open invitation to all
who would like to discover more about and participate in an active
process of learning, producing and sharing around the areas of
Free/Libre Open Source Software. FLOSS-developers, artists and
programmers such as the collective GOTO10 or activists from HAIP (Hack
Act Interact Progress) and many others form the basis for the event and
share their knowledge in the form of workshops, hacklabs, presentations,
installations and performances.

Link: http://linz.linuxwochen.at

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Open Call - liwoli 09
-----------------------------------------------------------------

We find the active process of learning, producing and sharing in the
Open Source community, an obviously successful method, incredibly
interesting, in particular because it is a strong opposition to the
usual behaviour in arts and media.

For the event we are calling for contributions in the form of
presentations, workshops and performances around the themes of Free and
Open Source Software. This invitation is not only for those who are
interested in “Do It Yourself” and how it interrelates with the current
creative production practices - a theme currently (largely) ignored in
the (Arts) University education program. The invitation is also directed
to those who are interested in the cultural importance of FLOSS.

Submissions Please send submissions before 25.03.2009 to :
call09-liwoli@... with
# Title
# Format: lecture, workshop, installation, performance, presentation
# Description of content
# Links of relevance
# Required things: projector, sounds system, running water, compressed
air, …

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Open Source Tools
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Workshops and lectures about FLOSS tools to make art. The expected
audience are art students, artists and media workers. Workshops and
lectures shall wxplain, promote and discuss FLOSS tools.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Art against Freedom
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Is Free Software and Open Source compatible to the self image of art and
artists? FLOSS is about sharing tools and knowledge. This is rarely
taken into consideration in artistic environments, where cultural
ownership is paramount. On the other hand the arts are essentially
self-referential in many ways, constantly reacting to and building upon
past work of others. Where are the parallels, where are the contradictions?

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Cracking vs. Hacking
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Using cracked software is a wide-spread among artists, creatives and
media-activists. The industry partly tolerates this in order not too
lose future customers, or even to get the practitioners “addicted” to
their wares. Another part of the community “hacks” its own programs
putting together what they actually need. So programs emerge, which are
often equal and sometimes even better in complexity and usability than
their closed source counterparts. Contributions for this section could
deal with this situation in many ways.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
State of the Art
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here it is interesting to hear about experiences in FLOSS projects, the
interaction of tool building and tool using, models for living from this
mode of operation. In particular the use of FLOSS tools in the
production of art, culture and media, especially in the university
context. It is also of interest, what experiences have been made with
active participation in FLOSS projects.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hack the artist
-----------------------------------------------------------------
With the artists' penchant for re-using, misusing and reinterpreting
everything, it might be said that their principle modus operandi is to
hack the world and themselves. Entertaining Contributions with and a
strong sense of humor around topics like: the end of art, Plagiarism,
Copyright/Copyfight, World improvement, …
>
> Linux New Media just asked whether we have any logo with "KDE" on it
> (otherwise they'll add KDE below using a different font). Do we have any?

I'm sure we have.
Or we have somebody who can do it quickly ?
Size should be 40 x 30 cm, right ?

> Hi,
>
> ( thanks Jos for pointing the thread to me, I am on the promo and
> event lists anyway. )
>
> Sorry for the delay in replying, I was travelling around the time when
> this thread got started. And Real Life kept me busy for even longer. I
> saw this thread just now. Actually, I decided to attend a FOSS event
> in a neighbouring city yesterday night, and they even accepted my KDE
> talk, which I will give in a 30 minutes from now. So I will keep the
> mail short now, will come back to it later in the evening.
>
> So, yes the KDE booklet was done by a team of volunteers in India just
> before FOSS.IN/2008. We had less than few weeks to put it all
> together, including finding a sponsor to get it printed. ( Yes, I
> know, I could have asked eV, but getting that kind money here means
> somebody would be have to do a lot of TAX math. ) So finding a local
> sponsor was the best, and whats better than a old time KDE contributor
> coming forward to help us with it.
>
> - yes, some of the material including text and images is dated now. It
> was quite recent when it was printed.

Ha, don't even think our comments come even close to some form of
criticism - these booklets are amazing. They're by far the best we
ever had to hand out to people... Sure we can improve on them, but as
usual with this kind of stuff, getting it together in the first place
is the hardest part - and you guys did that. Super-cool!

Of course I am desperate (ahem :D) to get my hands on any kind of
sources and fix and update stuff. I'd love to set up some kind of
yearly cycle where we update those. Or make them more time-enduring by
removing dates and specific versions and adding a separate leaflet
with the more recent stuff, whatever works best. But again, you should
tell those who worked on it we were genuinely impressed with their
work!

Esp considering the time constraints I just read about - if I just
think about how long it took to write and finish the feature guide it
is clear you guys did an amazing job.

> - yes, material was "merely" copied from techbase/userbase/pillars
> website, and the credits have been given to those.
>
> - we had a very less time window to get it done, and if you have ever
> done a 28 page booklet, you will know that it takes time to get
> everything done - from conception time to final printing and
> transportation ( Ask Adriaan about this ;) . So there was NO time to
> contact developers to ask for "most" recent information and then wait
> on them for the information then arrange it, then send it to layout
> designer and so on. I wanted it done before FOSS.IN/2008, KDE Project
> Day.
>
> - I completely agree that including the version release information
> and dates was a mistake. But we learn from mistakes.
>
> - I will go back home on Sunday, will contact the printer who did
> printing for us. Hopefully he still has the pdf/cdr files. If I get
> those, I will upload those and inform the list.
>
> - I have a lot of booklets left, I am passing/sending those around
> here in India. I just carried 8 KGs of those to this event ;).
> Thankfully, February is a month of events here in India. So I will
> make sure the booklets are distributed at most of the events if not
> all the events.
>
> - I have spoken to Claudia about this and as she pointed out ( thanks
> Claudia ), we are working on it. I can send 1 or 2 boxes ( each has 50
> booklets or so and weighs 2KGs ).
>
> - As Bart suggested, one solution is to get a extra sheet printed with
> the release/version info and tuck it along with the booklet.
>
> Hope that helps.
>

> > It would be great if we could also have those at CeBit. We only had
>
> No, there were a lot more printed than that. I already spoke to
> will manage to get them here before CeBIT.

If they're the same that we saw over at Tokamak, I think we can put some work on
refining the text and/or the artwork. The text in some point was looking quite
outdated (merely copied from KDE 4 pillars' websites) and not very professional.
At least I remember the part about Oxygen which was a bit... well... not very
great. That would mean people to work on texts though, not sure if I can help in
that.

> brought the box along with him.
>
> > It would be great if we could also have those at CeBit. We only had
> > about 100 pieces (estimation) at Fosdem. Was that all that was printed?
> > Or were there more?
>
> No, there were a lot more printed than that. I already spoke to
> Pradeepto about this. He will send me a couple of boxes. I hope we
> will manage to get them here before CeBIT.

If they're the same that we saw over at Tokamak, I think we can put some work on
refining the text and/or the artwork. The text in some point was looking quite
outdated (merely copied from KDE 4 pillars' websites) and not very professional.
At least I remember the part about Oxygen which was a bit... well... not very
great. That would mean people to work on texts though, not sure if I can help in
that.

Bye,

> > > I can print them as well -- for free. Color or black+white. Booklet
> left
> > or
> > > top edge).
> > >
> > > Only thing is: I'd need the PDF before end of this month, because I
> will
> > be
> > > abroad all of March.
> > >
> > > How many pages is one of these "handbooks"?
> >
> > It's 7 A4 sheets, which gives 28 A5 pages.
> >
> >
> > OK, so a "booklet, center-folded, saddle-stitched" would be the
> > appropriate format.
> >
> > Is it color or black+white?
> >
>
> It is in color. Can I ask which printing technology you use to print
> these brochures?

Laser printing.

For color it would be one of the best print quality machines
on the market (Ineo+ 6501, doing 65 ppm on A4).

For b+w it would be one of the best quality machines on the
market (Digimaster 150 EX, doing 150 ppm on A4).

I still do not know how many you'd need.

Hi Kurt,

It is great that you want to print the brochures for free and a laser printer is indeed the best quality on the market for home use.

The printing techniques best for professional look and feel is digital or offset. For a smaller faire laser printed brochures would be perfect, but for CeBit I think we might want to have something with a more professional look and feel...

So what do you think if we look for a professional printing company to have some extra of these brochures?

greetz
Wendy
