"phonon backend plugin could not be loaded"

Hello,

I am not sure if am right to post my query here.

I think I have all the required packages installed in my system but I still get a run-time warning while running phonon music player Qt example(http://pepper.troll.no/s60prereleases/doc/phonon-musicplayer.html) and so the play, pause and stop buttons are shown as disabled in the application. The warning is-

WARNING: bool Phonon::FactoryPrivate::createBackend() phonon backend plugin could not be loaded

The following packages are already installed, in my ubuntu system, through the package manager-

libgstreamer0.10-0

libgstreamer0.10-dev

libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0

libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev

and phonon, libphonon-dev, libqt4-phonon, libqt4-phonon-dev, libphonon4, and phonon-backend-gstreamer are also installed

Please note that I am using ubuntu 9.10

Any help is appreciated.

Amarok 2.2.2 beta 1 released

we are happy to let you know that the first (and only?) beta release
of Amarok 2.2.2 is out.

At least the case-insensitiveness helps:

That was the solution for 4.5.0 or 4.5.1.

It didn't work.

So I placed Phonon inside phonon (i.e., phonon/Phonon/ClassName) for 4.5.2.

No. It's to get <phonon/phonon> and <phonon>. Which is a header we used to
have in 4.4, but had to remove due to the Phonon subdir with the ClassName
classes.

Correct.

Yes. There's nothing wrong, except that it currently doesn't work on KDE. Nor
Qt.

No. The HFS+ filesystem is case-insensitive. But Mac can also run on ZFS which
is case-sensitive.

I also don't know if Apple's toolchain works with frameworks that are
symlinks.

That would break BC on the Mac.

No, the framework stays named "phonon.framework".

I expect that to cause problems: by default, the HFS+ filesystem on Macs is created case-insensitively (but case-preserving), and thus creating such a link won't work.

However, it's perfectly fine to install OS X on a case-sensitive HFS+ filesystem, and then this link would be necessary. So it's not so easy to decide based on the operating system alone.

We currently use <phonon/classheader.h> and <Phonon/ClassName> which fetches
headers from two different include directories on linux, but the same in
Windows?

I don't understand the need for the phonon_compat, but I assume it is to

it to work everywhere ?

If you use the -F option to the Mac gcc, it will take

#include <foo/bar>

And will search for /Library/Frameworks/foo.framework/Headers/bar.

That's one of the reasons why all Qt public headers use #include
<QtModule/something>.

Of course it also searches all the other -I include paths, but the whole point
of a framework is that we don't have to pass all of -I$INCLUDE_DIR, -L$LIB_DIR
and -l$libname. It has other benefits too. And you'd have to change all
buildsystems to have the extra -I flag...

The way I see it, there's no way around the issue. It has to be lowercase p.
(Unless of course we want to break full binary compatibility and rename the
library)

Excuse my obvious ignorance (as I have never really used a Mac), but can't
that path just be added to the include path, so the real path to for example
Phonon/Path becomes /Library/Frameworks/phonon.framework/Headers/Phonon/Path?
Or does the headers have to get stuffed directly into that Header-folder?

Phonon include header fix, once and for all

In Qt 4.4, when Phonon was included into the product, we kept the KDE library
name (libphonon.so.4), but we screwed up the headers.

Qt only shipped with phonon/foo.h, which meant that KDE apps would not compile
against the Qt-shipped Phonon.

So I tried to fix this for Qt 4.5.0 by shipping in Qt:
phonon/foo.h
Phonon/ClassName

Bad idea, because of Windows and Mac, where the filesystems are case
insensitive.

I tried again in Qt 4.5.1 and failed.

I tried again in Qt 4.5.2 and failed again.

I tried again in Qt 4.5.3 and it looked like I had succeeded. The structure
is:
phonon/foo.h
phonon/Phonon/ClassName
phonon_compat/phonon/phonon (the master include file)

qmake would add the phonon_compat dir on its own, but CMake wouldn't. It
shouldn't be a problem because KDE-based apps never used that master include
file.

Turns out it's ALSO a failure. So I'm giving up on fixing this on the Qt side.

The reason is that it breaks frameworks on Mac, because the headers are
installed at:
/Library/Frameworks/phonon.framework/Headers

The p must be lowercase because of the library name.

We're reverting Qt to 4.4 style headers: lowercase p, no ClassName.

Phonon upstream has those headers. I'm asking that the Phonon/ClassName
headers be declared "unsupported, never meant to be used" and any app using
them declared "you're walking on thin ice, please fix immediately".

If someone wants this decision reverted, please send a patch to Qt's
bin/syncqt and mkspecs/features/qt.prf and make sure you've tested on Mac with
frameworks as well as Windows.

If you wish to setup a forum for your users, please to not hesitate
the Forum Administrators ( who can be found in #kde-forum on Freenode
). Note that someone experienced with using your application, or
involved in its developement will be needed to assist moderating it,
so that questions can get answered.

For mailing lists, I believe you can ask the KDE sysadmin's about
that, I think they prefer bugs be filed at bugs.kde.org now ( with the
sysadmin component ) but I'm not too sure.

KMid2 status

Hi!

I've been developing KMid2 (a MIDI/karaoke player) in playground-multimedia
SVN for several weeks, and yesterday published the first preview release.
Packages are available at SourceForge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/kmid2/files/

My plan is moving it to extragear-multimedia some day, and continue the
development, not depending on the KDE SC release cycle. That's why I've
created the SF project site.

At this point, the initial features are completed, with Linux support only, a
single MIDI output port, and no KPart. I would like to stop here to think
about the work done, and listen to the community and users' feedback.

Is it a good time to move the repository to kdereview? Maybe I should wait
until 4.4 is released, or later? Is there something missing or a forgotten
step to fulfill before?

Another question. I would like to setup a forum (or mailing list) and a bug
tracker (separated from the old KMid one). There is already an user Wiki page
at http://userbase.kde.org/KMid2 (thanks, Anne!). I would prefer to use the
KDE facilities instead of the SF ones, when possible. May I?

[ANN] KMid2 preview release

KMid2 is a MIDI/Karaoke player for KDE4.

KMid was developed more than ten years ago, so it was time for a revamping.
KMid2 is a rewrite from scratch, with a new architecture and also some new
features.

This is a preview release. Should not be used in production.

Here are some major features:
* Plays MIDI and Karaoke files.
* Playback to external hardware MIDI devices.
* Allows to use software synths as well.
* Tempo and volume controls.
* Pitch (transpose) control.
* Rhythm view (visual metronome).
* Configurable character encoding, font and color for lyrics.

* MIDI Mapper.
* Channels window, with solo/muting controls and instrument selectors.
* Piano player window, using VMPK artwork and technology.

Jeff Mitchell had already provided a patch for most of this, but my
investigation into the proper mimetype resulted in video/mp4 instead of
audio/mp4 (apparently both are defined, yay). So that is fixed, and I've also
added the mp4 audiobook mimetype from the Kubuntu patch, so thanks.

This should be using "kioclient exec" instead of "dolphin" so the
users file manager setting is honored. I don't see anything else wrong
with this otherwise.

The first and last patch might make sense for inclusion upstream.

The one for Dragon Player looks fine, though if you included DVD
support that would be better.

But really I think you and Mandriva and the rest should get together
and come up with a dbus standard for "installing extra codecs at
runtime" so that such code can live upstream. All of you have your own
solution for this so there's probably a lot of wasted redundant
effort. Call it a "Kit" and everyone will love it. :) But thats more
of a long term goal.

The point being that Qt developers should be treating Phonon development like
WebKit development. As members of the community and developing upstream.

Um, they should use Qt since thats where the most up-to-date code
apparently anyways.

And when did svn.kde.org turn into a subversion mirror for
qt.gitorious.org? But a really bad mirror thats months out of date.

I mean I could see the reverse working: Nokia devs works in upstream
(eg the KDE repo) and then copy it over to the Qt repo when they want
to make a release. It would make development more open. Its basically
how it works with Phonon itself. But the current system for these
backends just makes things confusing and really doesn't have any
benefits.

If someone wants to patch gst, ds9 or qt7 they would just do a merge
request at Gitorious, doesn't seem so hard.

One thing to keep in mind is that Martin does plan on putting Phonon
into Git. Though frankly Qt Software loves multiple git repos I doubt
that would change your habits.

Ok, products that use webkit do have release cycles. I remember Ariya
saying they had to wrestle with this. In that situation running your
own branch is absolutely required. But Qt is the only group making
releases of the Nokia phonon backends.

Phonon is (supposed to be) released with Qt, and the development community is
extremely small compared to WebKit, and Qt has a significantly larger part in
the overall development of Phonon than WebKit (Qt's role in Phonon is more

And I have seen plenty of people using the released Phonon that comes with
Qt, with those backends, and also a growing amount of Windows people using
the Phonon-VLC backend (and a more or less steady amount of the MPlayer
backend), but maybe I just hear about them because they're harder to build.
Or something.
(Yes, yes, anecdotes. But a growing amount of them. :-)

developers who made fixes have SVN accounts.

phonon-ds9 is more or less unmaintained. What little personal
experience I have with it has been unpleasant, so it doesn't surprise
me that you'd have trouble like this.

You could think about implementing your parser as a phonon effect and
then implement it in phonon-ds9 itself. If its already a directshow
filter... it would make logical sense to work with ds9 directly. Your
code would need to be released under the LGPL then. But again, no
expert here. :)

jerkiness in video on using phonon on windows

Hi,

We are subclassing QIODevice to pass audio-video data to a custom parser
(a Directshow filter implementation) using Phonon. Phonon creates a
graph that includes the custom parser and corresponding audio-video
decoders and rendering filters. The custom parser internally separates
audio and video, which is then decoded and rendered.
When this sequence is played, jerkiness is observed periodically (spaced
every 2-3 seconds). By video jerkiness, I mean that previous frame is
again rendered causing a break in continuous viewing. It is important to
note that there is no break in audio.

When the same file with the custom format is drag-n-dropped in to
Graphedit, it automatically creates a pipeline and renders audio-video
data satisfactorily (meaning no jerkiness and in audio-video
synchronization). From this, we have concluded that the directshow
filters by themselves do not have any bug and perform correctly.

We are unable to figure out why this behaviour is observed on using
phonon in windows. Any help/suggestions in this matter will be appreciated.

Release notes for GStreamer Bad Plug-insÂ 0.10.17 "Anny bobany"

The GStreamer team is proud to announce a new release
in the 0.10.x stable series of the
GStreamer Bad Plug-ins.

The 0.10.x series is a stable series targeted at end users.
It is not API or ABI compatible with the stable 0.8.x series.
It is, however, parallel installable with the 0.8.x series.

"That an accusation?"

No perfectly groomed moustache or any amount of fine clothing is going to
cover up the truth - these plug-ins are Bad with a capital B.
They look fine on the outside, and might even appear to get the job done, but
at the end of the day they're a black sheep. Without a golden-haired angel
to watch over them, they'll probably land in an unmarked grave at the final
showdown.

Don't bug us about their quality - exercise your Free Software rights,
patch up the offender and send us the patch on the fastest steed you can
steal from the Confederates. Because you see, in this world, there's two
kinds of people, my friend: those with loaded guns and those who dig.
You dig.

This module contains a set of plug-ins that aren't up to par compared to the
rest. They might be close to being good quality, but they're missing something
- be it a good code review, some documentation, a set of tests, a real live
maintainer, or some actual wide use. If the blanks are filled in they might be
upgraded to become part of either gst-plugins-good or gst-plugins-ugly,
depending on the other factors.
If the plug-ins break, you can't complain - instead, you can fix the
problem and send us a patch, or bribe someone into fixing them for you.
New contributors can start here for things to work on.
