> Review request for KDE PIM.
>
>
> Summary
> -------
>
> Entity::addAttribute() currently always first deletes any existing attribute of the same type, before adding the new one. If the new attribute is the same object as the existing one, this will result in a crash since the new attribute will be deleted before adding it. This patch fixes this, so that nothing happens if the same attribute is re-added.
>
> The unit test is updated to test this.
>
> trunk/KDE/kdepimlibs/akonadi/tests/collectionattributetest.cpp 1057518
>
> Testing
> -------
>
> New unit test failed with old Entity code, runs successfully with new code.
>
>
> Thanks,
> CC'ing the translation coordinator Albert Astals Cid <aacid@...>
>

This is my understanding of the situation.

UserBase combines an easy way for writing documentation if you are not docbook
experienced. If you prefer to write in docbook, that's fine. When we
implement the Translation extension two-way exchange of documentation should
be fine. The result will be an html version in userbase and docbook providing
help-center stuff for on-line and CD/DVD inclusion.

I don't see any reason for anyone to change their preferred way of working.
The important thing is to get the documentation written, by whatever means you
prefer. You should, of course, make sure that your project is using basically
one means, not a mix that would cause duplication of effort, but that's all.
>>
>> Is it true that "user documentation should go to userbase.kde.org"?
>
> It makes no sense to discuss this question on this mailing list as this
> concerns all of KDE and not just KDE PIM. Moreover, developers are the
> wrong people to ask because we have almost no idea about how
> documentation (in particular with regard to translation) is handled in
> KDE.
>
> I'm not sure, but I don't think Thorsten has the authority to speak for
> KDE PIM. As far as I'm concerned, Thorsten speaks for KTimeTracker
> only.

This is correct, please keep this in mind.

>
>
>> Does that mean no documentation in kdepim/docs anymore?
>
> I don't think so.
>
>
>> Should the docs in kdepim be removed in favor of userbase?
>
> I don't think so.
>
>
>> Should the translation teams stop working on the translation of
>> kdepim/docs?
>
> No.
>
>
>> I'd really like to her an statement from the kdepim devels on this
>> isssue, I hate to waste the time of our translation teams.
>
> As far as I remember, the idea w.r.t. userbase was to use it for
> improving KMail's documentation resp. for rewriting it from scratch.
> The reason for using userbase for this instead of svn was that's it's
> much easier to use. The finished document (or a snapshot of it) was
> supposed to be added to svn. At least, that's how I remember it.
>
> Akonadi is a user thingy... every user has its own Akonadi instance running with its own cache,
> > In addition to that, AFAICS, addAttribute() called with the existing
> > Attribute as a parameter will first delete any existing Attribute (which
> > happens to be the same one as in the parameter), and then add the (now
> > deleted) Attribute back into the Entity. So addAttribute() should first
> > check whether the supplied Attribute is the same as the one it already
> > holds, and if so, do nothing. Or am I missing something?
> >
>
> Yes, I don't see why the call to addAttribute wasn't crashing all the time.
> The check for setting the current attribute might be a good idea. Care to
> write that and a unit test for it?

Done - see http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/2444/.

> Thanks for the review and keep it coming. I'll try to get around to adding
> more dox about entityData. Generally the ETM tries to do everything it can
> in data, and for type-specific stuff, like figuring out what the email
> subject or sender, or the addressee name or email address, it delegates to
> the subclass. That might not hold water in all cases, but it was the initial
> intention. I'll investigate a bit more of what it currently does.

I did get the impression that it might not be totally straightforward to define the difference between the two methods, so thanks for looking at it.

Diffs
-----

  trunk/KDE/kdepimlibs/akonadi/entity.cpp 1057518
-------

New unit test failed with old Entity code, runs successfully with new code.

Thanks,
>> > > > "official" documentation would continue to be written, in
>> > > > docbook, and hosted at the kde help center. Things didn't
>> > > > quite work out like that. Now there definitely is some
>> > > > "official" documentation there, and I had forgotten to edit
>> > > > that out. Thanks for commenting on it. It will be removed.
>> > >
>> > > So I should stop translating documentation .po files and write
>> > > wiki instead? Will information from wiki (userbase) be copied
>> > > into "ApplicationQQQ handbook (F1)" and distributed with KDE
>> > > packages?
>> >
>> > This is the wrong forum to discuss this question. The discussion
>> > needs to happen on the mailing list of the documentation team
>> > (kde-doc-english).
>>
>> I don't aggree with you as translator/doc writer.
>>
>> Tomas Straupis raised a valid question, which I had in mind since
>> thorstens mail saying "user documentation should go to
>> userbase.kde.org".
>>
>> So here is my "official" question from kde-i18n-doc@...:
>>
>> Is it true that "user documentation should go to userbase.kde.org"?
>
> It makes no sense to discuss this question on this mailing list as this
> concerns all of KDE and not just KDE PIM. Moreover, developers are the
> wrong people to ask because we have almost no idea about how
> documentation (in particular with regard to translation) is handled in
> KDE.
>
> I'm not sure, but I don't think Thorsten has the authority to speak for
> KDE PIM. As far as I'm concerned, Thorsten speaks for KTimeTracker
> only.
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> Regardless of this, I don't think that userbase (or any other online
> resource) will be an alternative to offline documentation in the
> foreseeable future as being "always online" is pretty much restricted
> to people living in first world countries.
>
>
> Regards,
> Ingo
>

Currently i am working with annew on some improvements for userbase
(and probably the other wikis, too). This involves also an extension
to allow import/export of po files. The initial idea is simply like
stated above, we want to integrate our existing wikis (which are
really considered to be easier handled) with the work of the
documenters and translators we have in KDE.
This is rather unfinished work, but still in progress. But i don't see
any reason to do it either one or the other way.
Both could be integrated well, and there is also no need to trash any
work already done. Mediawiki also already allows import/export of xml
files, which could form a nice connection between KHelp and userbase.

My 2 cents.

Regards,
Ingo (2) ;)
> > > > docbook, and hosted at the kde help center.
> > >
> >
>
>
>
>

Moreover, developers are the
wrong people to ask because we have almost no idea about how
documentation (in particular with regard to translation) is handled in
KDE.

I'm not sure, but I don't think Thorsten has the authority to speak for
KDE PIM. As far as I'm concerned, Thorsten speaks for KTimeTracker
only.

Regardless of this, I don't think that userbase (or any other online
resource) will be an alternative to offline documentation in the
foreseeable future as being "always online" is pretty much restricted
to people living in first world countries.

Regards,
Ingo
they should take into account that while wiki might be easier to edit (though
i'm not sure the problem with documentation is easy of edition, i'd just vote
for lack of manpower) it is totally a pain in the ass to translate (basically
it's impossible to do it in a structured way) so basically if you go to wiki

This problem can happen with all KDE applications, right?
I think that this should be handled in kdelibs instead. Also I think an messagebox to inform the user would be better, as otherwise KMail quites without any apparent reason when not run from the command line.
> -------
>
> The file "kmmainwin.rc" should be installed at some place such as /usr/local/share/apps/kmail/
> But if the file is missing, kmail goes on without sense.
> If it is started from a command line, one get a warning. I think a warning is not enought.
>
> my proposal: Check if the file is present, else give an error and stop kmail until the administrator
> has installed/corrected the missed file.

I don't like the current way in configuredialog.cpp, it is now more code than before...
Maybe create a list of KConfigSkeletonItem's once, then you can just iterate over the list and need to fill it only once at the beginning.
This would remove some of the tedious code here.

I'm sorry for this late review request. I'd prefer if you make this change in the akonadi-ports branch instead (you have it compiled now anyway).

/trunk/KDE/kdepim/kmail/configuredialog.cpp
<http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/2271/#comment2792>

I think you can get a translated label right out of the kcfg, with KConfigSkeletonItem::label().

So the i18n description can move to the kcfg as well.

/trunk/KDE/kdepim/kmail/configuredialog.cpp
<http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/2271/#comment2794>

I think this can all be removed, if you use KConfigSkeletonItem::default() when reading in the color.

/trunk/KDE/kdepim/kmail/csshelper.cpp
<http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/2271/#comment2796>

Same problem here as somewhere else here: if useDefaultColors() is true here, the colors are not initalized.

/trunk/KDE/kdepim/kmail/kmail.kcfg.cmake
<http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/2271/#comment2795>

I don't think that would work.
    How about just
    <default code>KColorScheme( QPalette::Active, KColorScheme::View ).foreground( KColorScheme::LinkText ).color()</default>

/trunk/KDE/kdepim/kmail/messagelistview/storagemodel.cpp
<http://reviewboard.kde.org/r/2271/#comment2793>

When using default colors, mColorNewMessage and friends are undefined now, aren't they?

You probably should use KConfigSkeletonItem::default() in this case. However, that function does not yet exist.
> > > is it possible to set the preferred language for every e-mail
> > > folder? I have a mix of german and english folders and the
> > > spell checker drives me nuts. So I want to set English as
> > > language for e.g. this mailinglist folder, but german for
> > > others.
> >
> > I'm sure that Ingo said you could have more than one dictionary
> > set up for spellchecking, so it does seem likely that you could,
> > at least, swap easily between them, but for the life in me, I
> > can't even see where to set up multiple dictionaries, much less
> > do as you want to.
>
> > At the time that userbase started it was expected that "official"
> > documentation would continue to be written, in docbook, and hosted
> > at the kde help center. Things didn't quite work out like that.
> > Now there definitely is some "official" documentation there, and I
> > will be removed.
>
> So I should stop translating documentation .po files and write wiki
> instead? Will information from wiki (userbase) be copied into
> "ApplicationQQQ handbook (F1)" and distributed with KDE packages?
> > is it possible to set the preferred language for every e-mail
> > folder? I have a mix of german and english folders and the spell
> > checker drives me nuts. So I want to set English as language for
> > e.g. this mailinglist folder, but german for others.
>
> I'm sure that Ingo said you could have more than one dictionary set
> up for spellchecking, so it does seem likely that you could, at
> least, swap easily between them, but for the life in me, I can't even
> see where to set up multiple dictionaries, much less do as you want
> to.

The dictionary can be chosen per identity.
> How does one add or remove a message from a thread in Kmail? Thanks.

Adding messages to a thread is not possible (at least not in a generic
way).

Removing messages from a thread is possible by creating
an "apply-manually-only" filter which removes the two headers
References and In-reply-to. In KDE 3.5 with IMAP folders the messages
still stay in the thread after the removal of those two headers, so
there the workaround does not really work.
> At the time that userbase started it was expected that "official"
> documentation would continue to be written, in docbook, and hosted at the kde
> help center. Things didn't quite work out like that. Now there definitely is
> some "official" documentation there, and I had forgotten to edit that out.
> Thanks for commenting on it. It will be removed.

So I should stop translating documentation .po files and write wiki
instead? Will information from wiki (userbase) be copied into
"ApplicationQQQ handbook (F1)" and distributed with KDE packages?
> Summary
> -------
>
> The patch solves two situation:
>
> 1. It adds support for the Geo field of the iCalendar which was missing so far.
> 2. Event/note start/end time changes caused duplicates in the CalendarLocal hashes. The bug is easy to detect by
> patching only tests/testcalendarlocal.cpp (and .h) and trying the new test with old KCal.

Same #warning issue again.

The original warning here might actually indicate a bug, since the copy constructor doesn't use the other object. Again, this needs an understanding of the code to be fixed properly.

This TODO is wrong, the function doesn't need any code, everything is done in the initalization list here.

Please don't add all these TODO comments

As with the other review requests, replacing a warning with a #warning doesn't reduce the amount of warnings :)

Each instance of unused warnings needs to be examined more closely, you have to check the code if the unused parameters are bugs, not implemented code or some other thing.
> > user documentation should go to userbase.kde.org, technical documentation
> > like API tutorials should go to techbase.kde.org.
> > http://userbase.kde.org/Kmail's last change is from december 2009.
>
> How is userbase.kde.org (which is multilingual) connected to these:
> http://l10n.kde.org/stats/doc/trunk-kde4/team/
>
> And why does:
> http://userbase.kde.org/UserBase
> Say that:
> "You will not find" ... ""Official" Documentation - found on kde.org
> or on application home pages"?
>

At the time that userbase started it was expected that "official"

documentation would continue to be written, in docbook, and hosted at the kde
help center. Things didn't quite work out like that. Now there definitely is
some "official" documentation there, and I had forgotten to edit that out.
Thanks for commenting on it. It will be removed.
>
> is it possible to set the preferred language for every e-mail folder?
> I have a mix of german and english folders and the spell checker
> drives me nuts. So I want to set English as language for e.g. this
> mailinglist folder, but german for others.
>
I'm sure that Ingo said you could have more than one dictionary set up for
spellchecking, so it does seem likely that you could, at least, swap easily
between them, but for the life in me, I can't even see where to set up
multiple dictionaries, much less do as you want to.

Hold it! In 4.3.85 I see that spellchecking is controlled by sonnet. That
should mean that it adapts to the language it sees. I think this is the first
version to use sonnet, so it may not be too polished yet, but it should solve
all your problems once it's settled.
