>> it would be quite easy to fix this so that the smaller, neater font is
>> used.
>>
>> There is a discrepancy in font between body text and table text which makes
>> pages with tables quite unpleasant. For a good example, see
>> http://userbase.kde.org/Amarok and scroll down the page. Again, I'm told
> Yes, sounds like an easy fix. We still should do this. I think polishing is
> important, and we should try to make the Wikis a great experience for the
> user.
>
>> Then there are some small additions to the skin that I'd like to make.
>>
>> The Toolbox can hold a Printable Version link - I think that would be
>> valuable.
>
> This seems to already have been fixed.
>
>> I'd like to see every page showing a Last Updated on ...... entry. Yes, it
>> would show where we are lacking, but it would, more importantly, allow a
>> quick assessment of how likely an entry is to be relevant to current
>> releases.
>
> Yes, this would be helpful.
>
>> It would, I think, be a politeness, as the very least, to show a small
>> 'Powered by Mediawiki' icon. It doesn't need to be big, or prominent, but
>> it should be there.
>
> Sounds good to me.
>
>> Now for bigger things.
>>
>> We are running Mediawiki 1.14.0, despite there being a known vulnerability.
>> This is release 50428, and the current release is 59487. There has been a
>> full stable release as well as the security fix since then, and 1.16 is
>> almost ready for release. Our sandbox is running a version of 1.16, and
>> we are finding it totally stable. More importantly, some high-profile
>> sites such as Wikipedia are already running 1.16 - and the version they
>> use is available to us. We definitely shouldn't be as far behind as this
>> - and at the very least should have 1.15 plus the security fix.
>
> Yes. Who is in control of the Wiki installation and could do the upgrade? Is
> this something sysadmin has to do, or can somebody else take care of it.
>

I can do the upgrade, as soon as we are sure about the test installation.
>
> Yes. Who is in control of the Wiki installation and could do the upgrade? Is
> this something sysadmin has to do, or can somebody else take care of it.

It depends on how Immanuel ( the Wiki server ) is configured. Someone
with SSH access who can write to the files used by the wiki is needed
at the very least.
> There is a discrepancy in font between body text and table text which makes

Yes, sounds like an easy fix. We still should do this. I think polishing is

For a long time I've wanted to make some improvements to UserBase, but been
unable to because no sysop was available to help me. After my recent blog on
the subject, the forum team set up a sandbox wiki where I can try out
improvements, test them for stability, etc.. Now I would like to move ahead.
Some of the things I want to implement are small, others larger. Starting
with some of the smaller things, then -

If you read UserBase in Konqueror it looks quite pleasant. Read it in Firefox
and it is, frankly, downright unpleasant. The same applies to TechBase - not
valuable.

I'd like to see every page showing a Last Updated on ...... entry. Yes, it
would show where we are lacking, but it would, more importantly, allow a quick
assessment of how likely an entry is to be relevant to current releases.

It would, I think, be a politeness, as the very least, to show a small
'Powered by Mediawiki' icon. It doesn't need to be big, or prominent, but it
should be there.

Now for bigger things.

We are running Mediawiki 1.14.0, despite there being a known vulnerability.
This is release 50428, and the current release is 59487. There has been a
full stable release as well as the security fix since then, and 1.16 is almost
ready for release. Our sandbox is running a version of 1.16, and we are
finding it totally stable. More importantly, some high-profile sites such as
Wikipedia are already running 1.16 - and the version they use is available to
us. We definitely shouldn't be as far behind as this - and at the very least
should have 1.15 plus the security fix.

We are also looking at extensions that would make the wikis more productive.
The current system for translations leaves much to be desired. There is an
extension that can be set up to allow both in-situ translations and also
export to .po files for external translation. This is installed on the
sandbox, and is being explored by some of our translators. There are some
issues to consider, most of which seem easy to fix. The biggest problem is
how to control the possibility of in-situ and external translations
concurrently.

Another extension, or set of extensions, under review concern adding
breadcrumb navigation. There are several possibilities here, but there are
issues with all of them. However, work on assessment continues and I'm
confident we'll find a solution.

Then there is http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:LiquidThreads - a system
for controlled discussion of topics. And I'm sure we will find others that
fill specific needs.

So - we have the ideas. We have the sandbox for testing. We even have a
sysop, neverendingo, willing and able to do the work. The question now is
whether any of this is likely to have an unforeseen adverse effect on any of
our wikis.

Comments, please.

> A Diumenge, 22 de novembre de 2009, Ingo Malchow va escriure:
>> Dear Readers,
>>
>> as some of you might have noticed, on the promo sprint we came up with
>> the plan of a remake of the main kde site. Basically we want to have
>> it up and running when 4.4 gets released.
>> Why? Right now it is way to bloated and not easy for new users.
>>
>> So, what we did, we planned a new menu structure to fit better into
>> the new branding (also something done on the sprint, nothing official
>> yet, but interested readers of the promo ml will already know).
>> Along with that it-s provided us with a first mockup for a possible
>> redesign. This means nothing more than a new layout, capacity will
>> still be used, same for the old layout "oxygen", it will still be
>> around.
>>
>> The first mockup can be seen here: http://imagebin.ca/view/WVgauJ.html
>> (Note: this is in a very early stage, still up to change)
>> For those interested in the code side, checkout www-devel from svn,
>> that's where we will put up everything before it gets moved to the
>> real site.
>>
>> If anyone wants to jump on board or help out, you can also visit
>> #kde-www on freenode, it is pretty active lately ;)
>
> Already expressed on IRC but as i'm the one that complained the list wasn't
> informed of that refreshement i'll put my comments here.
>
> Gives too many prominence to microblogging.

Good point.

>
> Seems difficult to adapt to "non KDE.org uses", that is, how do we adapt
> edu.kde.org or okular.kde.org to that?

Note, the mockup just provides a view of the front page, the other
sites will have a slightly different look (we are not yet at this
stage though). But the plan is to make it as easily adaptable than the
old design.

>
>
>
>

Seems difficult to adapt to "non KDE.org uses", that is, how do we adapt
edu.kde.org or okular.kde.org to that?

Albert

>
One part of the problem with OpenID is that it is ripe for spamming of sites,
as anyone can create a provider ( and there is software that can be freely
downloaded to create one )

It would be convenient for a KDE OpenID provider to exist ( even if limited to
authenticating for *.kde.org sites ) as we know that can be trusted. Also,
OpenID support has had problems in the past ( see xBases ) so I don't think we
can rely on it for single unified sign on to KDE websites.
It would already help a lot, if KDE sites would generally allow to login via
OpenID. So users wouldn't have to create new accounts all the time. I don't
think we need to have our own OpenID provider for that. Actually it's a nice
feature that you can just some existing account like you Google account.

I don't know what the state of OpenID support in Bugzilla is, though.

Something like a central KDE user database which links users from different
sites together and allows to identify users across sites might be nice, but is
not necessary as OpenID provides part of that. This should be loosely coupled
and be a web service, not some direct database sharing.

--
And to give some more insight, the xbases already have possible openid logins.
These had some problem in the past, as i heard.
But mixing all these sites together in the db is a not-so-good idea,
performance wise. Not speaking of db fail, if that happens each and every site
is involved.
And the size is already huge on some of them.
<neverendingo> some things need to be worked out, e.g. unified account (do we
want to use openid) etc
<argonel> seaLne: thanks
<tazz> actually i would not call it just forum related. Since what i was
thinking was, lets have kind of a kde identity account, using which you could
login to any kde website, let it be bko or kde forum or tech base for that
matter.
<tazz> maybe even commit back to the repo using the same account ?
<seaLne> dosen't *base use openid?
<sayakb> seaLne: they arent a provider anymore
<sayakb> tazz: about the bug, as neverendingo, i believe the use of openid on
all websites is yet to be decided. so this 'wish' would be met then and there
once something comes up.
<neverendingo> seaLne: they change it from time to time, as it is not as
reliable as it should
<neverendingo> seaLne: that's why it is a bit questionable
<sayakb> we didnt use openID as we didnt fine an extension aka MOD that uses a
trusted backend lib
<sayakb> we as in the forums

--
> > would it be possible to have someone around for a monthly meeting?
>
> I guess the "team" is me and that's it. But probably we could seek other
> subteams people (kdegames, multimedia, ...).
> KDE websites which are not wikis lack people.
> I'd be happy to participate to monthly IRC meetings depending
> on my agenda :)
>

The kdegames pages on userbase are similar in approach to the edu pages, so I

assume they have the same concerns. It would be useful, then, to get them on
Sorry but this is a conscious decision. While some people run KDE 4 on very low
end hardware and are perfectly happy with it (like me) others are not with the
same hardware. We'd rather not give minimum requirements because of this.
You can tweak KDE a lot to make it work on very low-end hardware as well as
tweak it for maximum power.
