keypad for throwingJust started playing Slashem (GTK) again, it's been a long time since my last game.
I'm using Slashem GTK on Ubuntu 7.10 straight from the repository. I'm running into the following two strange setup problems that I don't remember having when I was running under windows. 1st: When I set up the display to use big tiles, (game/options/misc/Map Visual=big tiles) it lasts for that one game. BUT, the setting is forgotten as soon as you save and when you restart the game, the Map Visual is back to character mode. 2nd: I can move with the keypad just fine, but whenever I attempt to throw, it pops up a menu with a really odd letter pad YKU H.L BJN Huh? I mean, I can click on the pad and it will work just fine. But the key arrangement is certainly counter intuitive, and what I would PREFER to use is just the keypad for throwing, same as I'm using for walking. is that possible? |

You need to change this in the options file. I had a quick look at the Ubuntu packages, but I couldn't find where they have put it. You might need to read the documentation they include with the package to find how they are expecting you to set options. > 2nd: I can move with the keypad just fine, but whenever I attempt to > throw, it pops up a menu with a really odd letter pad > > YKU > H.L > BJN > > Huh? Sure, just use 't' followed by one of the letters from the pad you so carefully transcribed above. You can toggle the setting of the keypad mode and use numbers instead of letters which some people find easier; but be aware that this is really inconvenient on laptops. (We use eight keys because there are eight directions. It takes a bit of getting used to, but you will loose many turns if you only move and fight orthogonally.) Yeah, I've been digging all over and I can't find it either. <sigh> >Sure, just use 't' followed by one of the letters from the pad you so >carefully transcribed above. I was just expecting the letters to be arranged in a sequence on the keyboard that made more sense. I figured out how to toggle the number_pad option through the gui menus, but unless I can find the options file, I have to reset it each time. most frustrating. But not frustrating enough to destroy the fun of SlashEm. :) thanks for the help! |

I figured out how to toggle the number_pad Oh, but it does, just look at your keyboard: y u hjkl bn h - left (because it's the leftmost) j - down (looks like a line going down) k - up (the one that remains) l - right (because it's the rightmost) y - up-left u - up-right b - down-left n - down-right Putting your right fingers on hjkl makes the assignment intuitive and usable on laptops :-) Greetings, Benjamin -- Benjamin 'blindCoder' Schieder Registered Linux User #289529: http://counter.li.org finger blindcoder@...
