Questions importing OFX from Merrill Lynch

Hello,

I have an investment account Merrill Lynch, and today I exported all my
transactions since the beginning of 2008, to import them into KMM. I
have two major issues. First, the ML account actually has several
sub-accounts, and I'm not really sure how to handle them in KMM. I
have already set up an investment/brokerage account with the necessary
investments. However, ML distinguishes their "money fund" from their
"bank deposit program". I'd like to keep them separate if possible,
but would accept just lumping them both into the brokerage account if
there is not easy way to do otherwise.

The second problem is that almost all the transactions show up as
purchases instead of deposits. This is primarily for interest and
dividends. Looking the the OFX file, they do look like income, so I'm
not sure if there is anything I can do short of manually changing each
one. An example is

KMM imports this as a payment of .99 with no payee or category.

I have the option of exporting Quicken files instead of Money, but I'm
going to assume that would not be any better, unless someone suggests
otherwise.

Fortunately, it will not be prohibitive to manually fix everything, but
I would hope it isn't necessary.

For encryption to a second party (which can be yourself very well in a case
like this) one only needs the public key of the second party. The way PKI
works is that the public key is for encryption. The private key of the second
party however is required for decryption.

So to make your article solid, you'd have to use an isolated public key on one
computer for encryption and a private key on another computer for decrpyption.

As long as all the relevant public keys are used for encrypting the file, you only need to have your private key to decrypt it. This is how you could share a file with multiple people and not have access to their private key.

FYI GPG only uses the public key to encrypt the session key, for multiple keys, it encrypts the session key once for each public key. That's how you can encrypt email to someone and still read what you sent, most mail programs automatically encrypt the mail with your public key as well as the recipient(s) public key(s).

The e-mail address supplied during key generation also works for the key_id.
E.g.

Encryption on Multiple Computers

I think I just figured it out. If there's a way I could contribute an article on how to get encryption working all the way, I would be happy to. I'm kind of new to GPG so it took a couple "gotchas" to get it all working. To get encryption working on multiple computers, one needs to do a few things.

First, generate your key on computer 1, then encrypt your KMyMoney database with it using Save As. Next, export both the public and private keys (keep them safe!!!) using the following commands:

gpg -ao keyname-public.key --export key_id

gpg -ao keyname-private.key --export-secret-keys key_id

In order to determine the key id of your key, run:

gpg --list-keys

Then look for a line that looks like "pub 1024D/". The part immediately following that is the key id. Use that key id with the code above to export your keys

After you've exported them, securely transport them to the computer you want them on. Once there, validate that GPG (package name is gpa on Ubuntu) is installed and run:

gpg --import keyname-public.key

gpg --import keyname-private.key

to import them. Now, you should be able to open up your encrypted KMyMoney file. \m/

The public is used for encryption (writing the data to the file). For
decryption (reading the data from the file) you need the private key.

You say ".... I could get access to my data anywhere I have the public key, my
private key, and the file" but you never mentioned copying the private key to
the laptop.

Also, in case the "Use GPG Encryption" is not available, GPG might not be
installed on. It checks for the output of

"gpg --version"

not being emtpy.

Apologies for an oversight, plus a couple of afterthoughts.

The attached file CSV_ui.py also needs to be in the same folder as the
first file.

A late addition was the character encoding feature, to cope with
different character sets. I had to modify /usr/lib/python/site.py, by
changing 'encoding = "ascii" ' to 'encoding = "utf-8" ' to allow utf-8
files to be read. I've only included a few types, so if I need to add
more, let me know.

I also see that, when I use myKubuntu instead of my openSuse, that the
GUI character spacing needs to be adjusted.

The public is used for encryption (writing the data to the file). For
decryption (reading the data from the file) you need the private key.

You say ".... I could get access to my data anywhere I have the public key, my
private key, and the file" but you never mentioned copying the private key to
the laptop.

Also, in case the "Use GPG Encryption" is not available, GPG might not be
installed on. It checks for the output of

"gpg --version"

not being emtpy.

Encryption on Multiple Computers

Is it possible to encrypt a KMyMoney archive and access it across multiple machines? I just tried doing this with my desktop and laptop and it didn't seem to work. I encrypted the file on my desktop computer, exported it, and exported the key using KGPG (using "Export Public Keys"). Then I tried opening the encrypted file on my laptop, which gave me the following error "Cannot read from file /media/Hard Disk/path/to/encrypted_records.kmy". Undaunted, I installed the public key I had generated, then tried opening the file again. I still received this error when trying to open it, and on the KMyMoney Settings...->Encryption page, I still can't check "Use GPG Encryption" since it's all grayed out.

Is there something additional that I need to do to access my data on another computer? My desktop's hard disk is starting to corrupt and I wanted to make sure that I could get access to my data anywhere I have the public key, my private key, and the file. Could someone help explain all of this to me? Consider me a complete newbie :)

CVS HEAD reads the calculator program from the

[Global Options]
ExternalCalculator=xxxx

setting in kmymoney2rc. No GUI yet due to string freeze.

CVS HEAD reads the calculator program from the

[Global Options]
ExternalCalculator=xxxx

setting in kmymoney2rc. No GUI yet due to string freeze.

That's probably the only choice you have right now. The name 'kcalc' is
currently hard coded into the program. The next release will lift that ban.

I use GnuCash

Their was a question as to why you use KMM instead of GnuCash. I use GnuCash myself just because I like the way things are entered as far as the register goes. I also like the fact that it takes what I have already used and uses it. What I mean is that if I enter in Target it will enter in the rest of the information for me. I know that kmymoney2 allows some thing similar but still not the same. I used Quicken for a lot of years so like entering in items like a check book. I might try out kmymoney2 again but so far I am happy with GnuCash.

GnuCash vs. KmM

I'm trying out both GnuCash an KMM.

KMM is an attractive looking program with the similar look as Quicken (which I have used for the past 18 or so years).

GnuCash has all the handsomeness of an IRS agent.

GnuCash seems to suffer from the inability to download transactions via Aqbanking- many people are having trouble with it. Personally- it's a pain.

KMM makes it simple to setup the download of transactions for my credit cards.

KMM is a nice program...so far. GnuCash? Honestly- who really wants to use a program accoutants use?

Why do you use KMM instead of GnuCash?

Well, that seemed to do it! :)

Doesn't seem to be able to import current stock prices. Each share seems to default to $1 / share. My update source was from Yahoo. May have something to do with these penny stocks trading on either OTCBB or Pink Sheets. Perhaps if these were trading on major exchanges without ".OB" or ".PK" as part of their trading symbol, it may have worked?

That may be a Schwab issue. I have brokerage, checking, & savings with
Schwab. The checking is the only one that can be downloaded directly
into KMM. Schwab says that they are making changes so I can download my
savings, but I haven't asked about the brokerage.

WRT transaction download: which protocol/method do you try to use? Maybe there
are other options than using AqB. We've also noticed from various reports,
that there are differences between the CC companies. So in case you can/want
to disclose which one it is, it might help.

This might be specific to AqBanking. Another location to ask would be on
aqbanking-user@.... You can post there in German if you want,
since the users are mostly speaking this language. I'll leave that up to you.
(BTW: I also read this list)

Since AqB provides MT94x importers, you should not follow the path through QIF
unless there is no other option left.

We really want to help, but we need a little more information.

The problems to this extent have been fixed

It's comforting to know that we are part of something that people use
and care about. I only wish some distros had given us more time before
dropping the kde3 libs (leaving just the libs would have been enough).
We are working hard on the port, and a beta release is near, but there
is still a lot of work to do.

Thank you very much for your words of support. I think I can speak on
behalf of the whole team when I say that we really appreciate these
words of support and confidence.

Specially after a long day chasing a tricky bug, and someone
complaining because this or that is not in the exact place they
expected it to be. :)

KBanking plugin: Error Importing file mt940

Hello guys

I am trying to import a mt940 SWIFT file using the kbanking plugin and
kmymoney version 1.0.2 which results in:

"Error importing file ...path/to/file.mt940"

How can I get more information on why the kbanking plugin is not able to
import this file?

Are there any other scripts/converters around I can use to convert e.g.
a CSV file into a QIF file? Unfortunately my bank (ZKB in Switzerland)
only provides CSV, mt940 and mt942 formats...

KMyMoney is a killer app [PCLinuxOS survey]

Hi, Thomas, Alvaro and other KMM Devs,

It's Thanksgiving Weekend here in the U.S., so I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank you for all your work on KMM -- and your helpful, friendly support via this mailing list. Both are top-notch. Although I imagine that it's frustrating when you hear complaints and yet another feature that someone wants added to a wish list, please remember that your dedication to KMM is helping Linux users all around the globe.

Recently in the PCLinuxOS User Forums, there was a mini-survey (started by mikkl, BTW) on which KDE 3.x application people _had_ to have before switching to KDE 4 as their production work environment. If you look at the link below, you might be surprised at the number of respondents who said that KMM is their killer app:

Considering the amount of code in KMM and its complexity, I'm sure that it is a huge task to port the program to KDE 4. I am fine with patiently waiting until the new version is ready; in the meantime, I will continue to use the current KMM on my Ubuntu 8.04 partition and my PCLOS KDE 3.5.10 partition. I personally prefer that you take as much time as you need to do a thorough job, rather than rushing to meet some artificial deadline ...

When it's ready, I will look forward to using the KDE 4 version of KMyMoney. I've had a first taste of KDE 4.2.4 from my recent installation of Pardus 2009 (which is very polished and easy to use), and although I still have lots to learn, the switch has not been as traumatic as I had expected. It is running OK on my older hardware and I'm actually liking KDE 4.

Thank you again for everything! I have the option of going back to using Quicken on our Mac, but I don't plan on doing that. I can rely on KMM to provide me with an accurate record of our family's finances.

You can shrink their size, but you can't get rid of them completely.
Check the settings.

Please be more specific about the problem with AqBanking. If your
credit card company provides a compatible way, someone may be able to
help you with it.

Alvaro, you have my full support and don't change your mood!

If BPG's wish list is so very specific, I am afraid he must sit down and
develop his own accounting program. When it is done I will show up and give
him my list of specific wishes not minding what is best for the majority of
the users.
I just keep wondering about certain people's neverending demanding attitude
especially from within such own cluelessness.
What if I (and so many others) completely disagree with BPG's 3/4" ? Will you
then try to make it 3/5" ?

It is what it is.

If you want a cleaner ledger, you can go to Configure KMyMoney, then
Register, and on the Display tab, uncheck everything.

If you still want to use the transaction form to enter your
transactions, as oppossed to doing it directly on the ledger, you can
check "use transaction form".

Then, if you stop comparing to other products, and how easy they are,
making me wonder why you are even using KMM, I will try to help in a
better mood.

Each transaction takes up about 3/4".

There's gotta be an easier way than this!

I think GnuCash is an abomination....I don't want to go back to it OR Quicken (which runs perfectly....every time).
