The diff I attached is much smaller (1,1kb uncompressed vs 96kb compressed)
than the previous one. Maybe this helps.

I'm trying to use Kompare to apply a patch to the source tree.

I click "Blend URL with diff", open the source directory and the patch file.
Then I can see the complete source file and the modifications to it made by the
patch.

Then I press "apply difference" and "save"

What happens?

* the patch file is modified and contains some parts of the source.
* the source file is untouched

What do I expect to happen?

* Apply the patch to the sources
* don't change the patch file

This concerns the way kompare treats extra or missing files when
comparing
two directories. The way I am trying to use it is to compare present website
contents with an earlier version of the website.
Consider an extra file (which occurs when one edits and old file "foo"
and
does not erase the foo~ file that an application such as emacs creates.
Kompare finds and reports the differences in the old and new foo correctly,
but then goes on to report that all of lines in the new foo~ file are
different
than the "lines" in the non-existent "foo~" file in the old directory.
It would be more helpful if it were reported (in addition to the old and
new
foo file differences) that there was an extra file in the new version of the
directory named "foo~" and of course where it is located.
There is a more serious consequence of the present kompare in the
following case(s).
Consider the addition of an new symbolic link in the new version of
the directory (a symbolic link to a file outside the present directories
being compared). Ie. in directory old there is no
symbolic link, but in the new there is. (Eventually when the directory is
burned to a CD, or moved to the location of the active website, the linked
file will get included, but prior to that there is just a new "symbolic link"
file. Presently kompare reports that it cannot parse the new file. But as
this
is a new "file" it needs only be reported that way. Ie. it's contents are not
of interest.
If this is a departure from the way most code developers use kompare,
then this new method of reporting could be made an option.
I am a new user of kompare, it's cool, and I do think it could be very
useful
in assuring that there are no "accidental" updates to my website directories.

i have to save both files (with all the current applied changes) reload

i use krusader to initiate kompare to compare two files

Normally, kbuildsycoca4 should be run automatically when kded detects a change
in a service file. For some reason, that doesn't always work. But that's a
kdelibs issue, not a Kompare one, and there's probably some bug report about
that already.

AFAIK, kbuildsycoca4 should be run after building/installing, so KDE will
properly update its service/desktop-files cache and recognize the new installed
plugins...

BIG Thanks for your quick reply.

Indeed running kbuildsyscocoa4 solved the problem,
so the bug is probably distro related (i'm using gentoo ebuilds).

Maybe I could write a patch that checks for that condition and instructs
the user to run kbuildsyscocoa4 ? Or just force the kbuildsyscocoa4 run ?
What do you think ?

Uhm, yes, the backtrace matches. We never figured out what caused that bug and
what "fixed" it. :-(

The line which fails is the query for Kompare/ViewPart. Somehow your services
are not registered properly. Try running "kbuildsycoca4".

diff to provoke crash

Steps to reproduce crash:

1. unpack diff.tar.gz in current directory
2. execute $ kompare a b
3. in kompare, move to the next file by pressing Ctrl + PgDn or the appropriate
toolbar button
4. use the mouse to select the directory 'a'
5. again move to the next file as in step 3.
6. kompare crashes

Selecting a directory is the same as selecting the first file in that dir, and
the backtraces of this and 211456 both end up in the navtreepart's
setSelectedFile.
Almost certainly a dupe of the other one you filed, so don't reopen unless this
persists after 211456 is fixed

I'm trying to merge two branches of a project with kompare, but I find its
behavior very awkward for this task.

Currently, you have a "source" and a "destination" versions of each tree, and
you can only apply changes from the first one to the second one. If you want to
invert the files, you have to go "File->Swap source and destination", but that
makes you lose the position on the file you were working on, and the status of
the file tree gets reseted. This is unacceptable if you constantly have to move
changes from A to B and from B to A.

With vimdiff, for example, this is much easier. You have a left buffer and a
right buffer, and the source buffer will always be the one the cursor is on.
Also, you can move from source to destination with :diffput, and from
destination to "source" with :diffget. This behaviour is much more flexible.

If implementing vimdiff behaviour is impossible or undesirable to implement, it
would be really nice to at least make it so I don't lose the position of the
file I'm working on when switching source and destination, or when refreshing
the diffs with F5.

Fixed in trunk and 4.3 branch, the fix will be in 4.3.3.

Fixed Fedora packages (kdesdk-4.3.2-2.fc13, kdesdk-4.3.2-2.fc12,
kdesdk-4.3.2-2.fc11, kdesdk-4.3.2-2.fc10) now building.

Distros are strongly encouraged to apply the fix ASAP.
