Hi!

Are there any plans to include the symbol pictures for the toolbar in
the next AucTeX distribution? The link
http://www.math.leidenuniv.nl/~frasson/symb-pics.tar.gz does not exist
anymore.

Greetings,

Sergio.

great! thanks. In Mac OS (Aquamacs and Carbon Emacs) the symbols in Menu
are not shown (maybe some Mac OS fonts problem?), therefore this is my
only chance to see them :)

best,

Sergio.

Dear Sergio

In the header of the tex-bar.el one finds the following instructions

;; Special requirements for the use of experimental symbol-toolbar:

;; -  Customize `TeX-bar-LaTeX-buttons', adding the label
;;    `LaTeX-symbols-experimental' at the end.

;; -  You should have a folder called "symb-pics" with the pics of the
;;    symbols (xpm format is a good one), and the *parent* of this
;;    folder should be in `load-path'.

;; Did you read carefully this item?  I will say again: the folder
;; "symb-pics" should *not* be in `load-path', but its *parent*.

Did you follow this instructions?

Regards

Miguel.

I guess that the "site-lisp" path is always in load-path by default. I
have there my symb-pics directory. Therefore I am able to see the symbols.

But AFAICS these "graphical" symbols have nothing to do with the ones
presented in the *math* menu. For instance, in Linux I was able to see
that symbols in menu but not the symbols in toolbar. So, I put also your
symb-pics in the site-lisp path there and this did all the trick...

cheers,

Sergio.

as for the symb-pics, yes.

I guess that the other problem (symbols in Mac OS math menu not showing
up) does not have to do with AUCTeX, but at least I see the symbols in
the toolbar. Maybe the first problem is a fonts problem in Mac OS.

best regards,

Sergio.

M-x customize-variable RET LaTeX-math-menu-unicode RET

Set it, save for future sessions, quit and restart Emacs.  If you have
success with that, use M-x TeX-submit-bug-report RET to report your
version of Emacs and that the default setting of this variable is
incorrect for your setup.

I suspect that we might set it to t by default on Emacs >= 23.  But I
don't think people have tested this yet.

This didn't work. Neither in Aquamacs or Carbon Emacs. In Aquamacs, I
set this variable on as suggested and the status is mantained in the
next sessions, but no symbols are shown. Strangely, in Carbon Emacs even
if I set it to on for future sessions, the variable is not turned on by
default after opening the session and in any case, the symbols are never
shown.

Hi again,

I looked more carefully into the variable in Carbon Emacs and the saved
lisp expression is:

(and
  (string-match "\\<GTK\\>"
               (emacs-version))
  t)

So, I guess that given that this is a Carbon (not GTK) version the
variable is not set on anyway. It also seems that I cannot edit this
expression.

That would correspond to "save for future sessions", not "set it and
save for future sessions", I think.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Hi. Sorry, maybe i did something wrong. I can edit in fact the Lisp
expression and use only the "t" value. However, still no symbols are
shown in Carbon Emacs.

I just also replicated the same problem in Emacs Cocoa (also Mac).

If you edited the expression and saved for future sessions and restarted
Emacs, I would expect that the math menus changed, even if they display
garbage or sqaure boxes.  If they don't change at all, this is likely a
problem with AUCTeX.  Perhaps you need to initialize the variable at the
top of .emacs (not using customize) to make sure it gets activated
before any part of AUCTeX is loaded.

Personally, I think it is a mistake that we can't change the menus
in-session.  It is probably not too hard to do this and would make it
easier to experiment with the functionality.

wow, yes! this workaround actually works :) I tested this within my 3
Emacs distributions on my Mac (Aquamacs, Cocoa, Carbon).

cheers,

Sergio.
