limitations of 'Occurrences in Graph' list in Manage Database windowHi Experts
In the Manage Database window, under 'Tables', there's a list of all the TOs from each base table. The trouble is, the list is too long, and I can't see all of it, because this window is not scrollable (left and right). I'm looking on the Relationship Graph for a particular TO out of nearly 450, and even with colour-coding, I can't find it. Is there any way I can see the complete list? Then I could know whether the TO I'm looking for is actually based on the base table I think it is (my naming convention *should* ensure this, but I may have made a mistake in naming or colouring it), which might help me find it in the Relationship Graph. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking! Colm _______________________________________________ FMPexperts mailing list FMPexperts@... http://lists.ironclad.net.au/listinfo.cgi/fmpexperts-ironclad.net.au |

I tried making the Manage Database window bigger by moving it to the left of the screen and then stretching it to the right, but unfortunately I reached its maximum size before I got to the end of the list, so that didn't help! Didn't even realise there *was* a maximum size! Have you tried to make a DDR? It should show all there is. Re: limitations of 'Occurrences in Graph' list in Manage Database windowThank you Winfried.
> Have you tried to make a DDR? It should show all there is. Yes, I've done that, and fed it into Inspector, which has told me that it is indeed based on the table I thought it was. Now I still have to find it on the Relationship Graph. It must be there somewhere, I'm sure! Re: limitations of 'Occurrences in Graph' list in Manage Database windowColm,
I guess now I understand the problem. Are you aware that you can reduce the scale as necessary by clicking on the "typewriter" icon on the right of the reduce (-) icon and select the TOs with the arrow keys? Once selected a click on the pencil lets you see the TO or relationship definition. Winfried On 2009-07-03, at 14:09, Colm Osiris wrote: > Thank you Winfried. > >> Have you tried to make a DDR? This is functionality which FMP should include! Maybe version 11! Only slight problem is that if you install it in an admin account (as I do with all my software), it will not be accessible in other accounts. To get round this, give it 'Read & Write' status for everyone in the Get Info panel. Whether or not this will be reset when repairing permissions, I have yet to discover! I've no idea why I used brown, as I have no base tables which I've used that colour for. I'm sure I had a reason at the time, but I'm blowed if I can remember it! Re: limitations of 'Occurrences in Graph' list in Manage Database windowI have no solution for you Colm,
but I wanted to reply to Chris' email recommending FM Butler Occurrence Selector. I found a small bug in it. It doesn't work if you use spaces in your TO names (which we use a lot). I am not talking leading spaces (which I am not using but rather spaces inside the name). It shows everything fine until the first space in the TO names, but after the first space shows random results. Eg. I name my tables as A_name, B_name etc I name my main TO as A_Name, inner related TOs as "A to B to D_blabla", and external db TOs as "A to xA to xF_blabla" When using Occ. Selector, if I search for "A to xA to xF" first result will be "A to A...", second "A to B...." etc. Even when I copy the ful name of the TO and past it, it gives me wrong results. When I converted one TO spaces to underscores ( _ ) it show up as first match, which is good, but if I need to convert all my TO to be without spaces just to use this, it's not worthy. Even for free app. This is just my opinion. Your frequent FM talker: Pavle Ancevski Pajo New York Hotel Trades Council fmtalk@... I name my tables as A_name, B_name etc > I name my main TO as A_Name, inner related TOs as "A to B to > D_blabla", and external db TOs as "A to xA to xF_blabla" I never use spaces in anything, table names, TO names, value lists, custom functions, or fields, or anything else. This comes from many years of programming BFM (Before FileMaker), when spaces in names was just not allowed, and it seems to me to be pretty good practice. All my names are made up of compound capitalised words. In TOs, I always name them like this: the base table is always called tXxxxxx, where the 't' stands for 'table'. The TOs based on the above table would always be called Xxxxxx_Yyyyyy, where tYyyyyy is the name of the base table it is relating to. For instance, to pick one at random, I have a TO in the current solution called 'ClientDept_ClientContact_Job_All @FindByJobTitleList_DisplayByAccount'. From its name I can tell exactly what tables it relates, and how. Sometimes the TO name elements have a 'g' suffix, which means 'global'. Without such a naming convention, in a solution of over 400 TOs (from an original 43 base tables), I would never know where I was! I'm sure other naming conventions are available! Re: limitations of 'Occurrences in Graph' list in Manage Database windowWhat I do is select the base table, hit Command+U (on Windows) to
select all TO's with the same base table, and then pick the color for all selections at once. This fixes any coloring errors that I might have made and keeps the colors consistent. My use of the Relationship Graph has become so much more powerful today, because of this keyboard shortcut and because of Occurrence Selector. I love this list! Re: limitations of 'Occurrences in Graph' list in Manage Database windowIf you will select your base table and then click on the button just
to left of the percent box, you will see this option. You can also select TO's that are one table away. So surely it is documented somewhere. :) James www.james-mc.com On Fri, Jul 3, 2009 at 10:31 AM, Colm Osiris<subs@...> wrote: > Thank you James. > >> What I do is select the base table, hit Command+U (on Windows) to >> select all TO's with the same base table, and then pick the color for >> all selections at once. No, I definitely meant 'Tables'. That is the name of the tab in the Manage Database window that lists all the base tables. Not relationships. It is where there is a list of the 'Occurrences in Graph' that I could not see all of, because it is too long and the window doesn't scroll left or right. That is the list I was talking about. The relationships I was talking about are in the Relationship Graph, under the Relationships tab. Honestly, I do know the difference! > If you're on a Mac, print the graph to Preview. Then in Preview you > can use > the sidebar search feature to enter text for any object you're > looking for. It works, though it comes out really tiny, and has to be zoomed quite a lot to be readable. Perhaps that's because I made it put them all on one page, and there are over 400 TOs there. Wow, when I did it as multiple pages, it created an 80-page PDF! Thanks very much. I now have three solutions to my problem, all of which work brilliantly. Re: limitations of 'Occurrences in Graph' list in Manage Database windowHi FM talkers,
just to share something with you regarding this threat. I posted a question to FM Butler for the bug I found in their Occurrence Selector app, about dealing with spaces in the name of TOs. I explained what I saw, and asked are they aware of that and is there a way to fix that, or.... Look at the official response from Mr. Gekiere from FM Butler: Quote: Hi, Thank you for your feedback. It should work fine if you type fast enough :) Best Regards, Lieven Gekiere :End Quote Smile face, nothing about the issue I raised. I am trying to use their app, I've found a bug, and what I get is "use FM relationship graph and type fast as you can". Simply said, weird. I googled Lieven Gekiere, and saw that he is a FM tech from Belgium. It must be the European humor he used in his email, which I started to miss, since I am originally for Europe (only the wormer southern parts of it) Your frequent FM talker: Pavle Ancevski Pajo New York Hotel Trades Council fmtalk@...
