lyrics to unmetered music

Hello,
I've followed the procedure of multiple syllables to one note. My problem is
that, when I apply this to unmetered music, the procedure works except for the
fact that the first syllable of the multiple-syllable expression is no longer
aligned with the beginning of the notes.
I wish I could send you a short attachment to illustrate what I mean.
Thanks
guy

It would be easier for us to help you with an example :)

Of course you can, see
http://lilypond.org/web/devel/participating/bugs about creating a
minimal example.

By default, each syllable is centered to the corresponding note (with a
few exceptions, like when you have a melisma). When using the trick
described in the manual, LilyPond will treat the multiple syllables as a
single long syllable, which then is centered to the note head. In these
situations, you could change the alignment using
\override LyricText #'self-alignment-X = #LEFT
