The problem does not occur if I install Eclipse into my home directory.
I used to install it under /opt, and then it creates a .eclipse directory in my home to store additionally installed plugins.
Probably, it is sufficient to have write permission to the directory containing Eclipse wherever it is.
I don't know whether this is a bug in M2Eclipse or Eclipse Galileo.
Anyway, installing Subclipse support for M2Eclipse should work to the .eclipse directory as well.

Hi,
if I install the Maven SCM integration or Maven SCM handler for Subclipse, both the M2Eclipse and Subclipse stop working.
Their entries disappear from the New project dialog, and from Window / Preferences as well, although Eclipse says that they are installed.
When I remove these components, both plugins start to work again.
I use Eclipse Galileo for Java Developers, SR1 (linux-gtk-x64), and I removed ~/.eclipse and ~/workspace before starting eclipse.
Currently the following plugins are installed:
Maven Integration for Eclipse 0.9.9.2009092308
Subclipse 1.6.5
SVNKit Client Adapter 1.6.4
SVNKit Library 1.3.1.6109
JNALibrary 3.1.0
I tried to install m2eclipse from the development update site as well, without success.
Has anybody encountered the problem?
Please tell me, if I should provide more information.
Thanks in advance,
Miklos
