m_transtab.c assertion in 3.4.1

Running valgrind 3.4.1 on ppc I find the following when running a basic
test:

I see in the code where this is being done but do not understand
how it gets set or how to resolve this issue.

Any ideas?

Maybe try allowing a value of 16.  (I think there are two places
where this is checked; you'll fall over the other shortly.)
