The major problem with Open Office is that it is not compatible both ways
with MS Office; in other words, an Open Office document cannot be read by
MSO, so there is no  point in sending people such a document unless you know
they have Open Office. If it WERE compatible both ways, it would surely kill
off MSO in no time ...

Simply store the document in a format that their software can use.

What in the world makes you think that? "File" -> "Save As" gives you
the option of 3 Word formats.

Simply save the document in Office format.  You have more than one Office format from which to choose.

This is a problem of Microsoft Office, not of OOo.

But, in the SP2 of Office 2007 (and future 2010), this is solved:

Hi,

MS Office 2007 supports ODF (as of SP2, 2009).  However, formatting can get messed
when Word opens the doc.

There is also concern over the next version of Office having ODF as part of an 'embrace,
extend, extinguish' policy by MS - see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend_and_extinguish

In effect, this *could* become a repeat of the death of Netscape - Frontpage saves an HTML
file that IE opens but Netscape doesn't/can't/messes up.  User concludes Netscape is
broken, not the HTML.

I'm all for MS using ODF - ending vendor lock-in, etc.  However, I don't want to find out I have
a bundle of files that claim to be ODF that only Word can open/properly render.
