Now that upstream changes have eliminated the previous spelling hang, I am working to make the spelling improvements (OS X spellchecker as well as cocoAspell compatibility) ready for primetime. I've updated the topic/spelling branch, and testing of the OS X spellchecker is welcome (it's the default behavior for Cmd-: in that branch).
I currently find that M-x ispell causes the menu to show only a single "Aquamacs" entry when ispell is highlighting a word and waiting for input. This occurs using ispell in the nightly build, too, so it's not a result of my changes to ispell.el. I have not yet checked whether this occurs in GNU emacs.
