mgetty/vgetty vocp install?

I am trying to install mgetty/vgetty and then vocp (www.vocpsystem.com) on Fedora 8 for use with misterhouse.  The vocp site mentions a force_detect patch to bypass automatic modem detection (which often fails).  I did as instructed and removed the default mgetty programs.  Had some trouble finding all the parts for the new install.  VOCP apparently used mgetty 1.1.30.  I thought I would try to use the latest and got 1.1.35 from http://mgetty.greenie.net/
Then found a force_detect patch for 1.1.35 here:  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=287288

I was able to get the patches applied but make threw out a few warnings and make install failed.

I am thinking maybe I should forget 1.1.35, get mgetty 1.1.30 and use the files on the vocp site.

Haven't found much in the way of forum support for these programs.  The few I found seem to be old and inactive.

Anyone have experience with installing vgetty from source and the force_detect patch?

I discovered that the book 'Linux Toys' (the first one) has a VOCP chapter and is for use under RH9.  Also comes with a CD with all the rpms.  A little dated but still similar to F8.  I was able to get it through my local library.  Just had to make a symbolic link for /dev/modem to my modem port and things are running.  Still have to fiddle with the config to get the proper operation but this is a big step.  I would recommend the book for anyone having trouble getting VOCP running on Fedora.
