mono-basic2.4 build failed

I tried building mono-basic2.4 on my mac mini and got the configure step
done okay, but running make replies with no target found so I tell it to
make all and then get no config found at the end of the failed build.
I'm using leopard and did this in terminal mode and so far as I know
Leopard and darwin are closely related as is bsd.  Has anyone else
succeeded in doing this build who can tell me what I did wrong?
