Anyone figured out yet how to get myportal working again in Intrepid Ibex?

well, sorry - I'm not using myportal, my homepage is about:blank ...

Maybe we could get together as a community of galeon users and get
something done together. Like fixing few bugs, adding some nice
features... I would be interested in doing that, but of course not
alone, is anybody else interested in this?

I just quit using Galeon :-( due to it always crashing and losing my passwords.  Is there still a user base larger than 10 worldwide?!!  Bring me back - I miss my icon-based bookmarks folders in my toolbar. see screenshot; attached - is that allowed in the list?

Cheers,

Richard

I'd be interested, time permitting.  I haven't touched C or C++ since
university, though. :/

We have to be careful to reply to the mailing list, as it seems to be
misconfigured and answer to the sender seems to be always preferred.

I never used any browser for storing passwords, I don't like this
"trusting" in something that I don't understand myself. I prefer to
store my passwords on a loopback cryptmount device.

I am quite happy that galeon stopped crashing on .pdf files though,
and only crashes on about 10% of flash files and only on 5% of
javascript code. Mostly when I'm closing a tab. However if first I go
to about:blank then close the tab - it doesn't crash. An interesting
workaround.

yeah, I love that I can have similar bookmarks, but with a search box
included. I attached a screenshot too :)

Well, I'm a user and a friend is too. So that's two. But we're both
thinking about switching away---if only a browser had the features I
need!

And indeed that's the main feature I've never been able to give up
galeon because of (actually, i have a collection of only-icon
bookmarks, and a (much shorter than yours!) collection of no-label
"smart bookmarks". You can almost do this with epiphany (failing
largely for æsthetic reasons I think), but it didn't satisfy me. I
think I relied on a plugin which stopped working at some point. I'll
probably keep using galeon until another browser (which I don't need a
plugin for) will do *my* bookmarks bar my way.

I'm also a heavy smart bookmarks user -- Epiphany's smart bookmarks do
about half of what I need smart bookmarks to do, and it's the wrong
half.

For a long time Galeon was also the only browser in which I could have
tabs on the right, something I absolutely can't live without.

Time permitting, of course... but better to move at slow pace, than
to go backwards :)

I work with C++ daily, I just don't like GTK.

I'm using debian lenny, recently I learned how to compile packages with
debug information so that gdb and valgrind can directly tell where is
the error. You can try that too, hopefully just reading this thread
would be enough for you:

  http://www.mail-archive.com/sawfish-list@.../msg01782.html

up to the last one:

  http://www.mail-archive.com/sawfish-list@.../msg01837.html

and maybe this (but applied to galeon):
  http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_prepare_a_patch
or probably just an
  apt-get source galeon
  sudo apt-get build-dep galeon
  cd galeon......
  debian/rules binary
after editing debian/control file will do

It will allow to have a galeon-dbg.deb package created which is
automatically discovered by gdb and valgrind.

I will try that with galeon soon. To run it in valgrind, and to use
`ulimit -c unlimited` to dump cores and get crash backtrace with all
debug info included:

  ulimit -c unlimited
  galeon # wait until crashes
  gdb `which galeon` ./core.31539
  bt

The things that I'm mostly looking forward are:

 - eliminate crashes

 - add Edit->Undo which reopens recently closed tabs

 - fix the page zoom, so that it is applied to images also.
Not only to the text. Perhaps with several pixel interpolation methods
(nearest, bilinear, sinc - I have the algorithms right here for it ;)

 - add Web->Flash & Web->Pdf
which allow to turn on/off Flash & Pdf just like it is possible
    currently with Java & Javascript

 - adding back session management (which was removed about 2 years ago)

best regards

Firefox can't do smart bookmarks can it? It any case it's got a few
other reasons I won't use it. Two main reasons are that I can't make
tabs behave properly in it, and it doesn't use gtk and therefore
behaves differently from other programs I run. My statement before was
a necessary but not sufficient condition, but other browser meet most
conditions.

(It's possibly you can make tabs behave properly in firefox with a
plugin, but I've already said, I'm not going to rely on plugins
because they're too unreliable. I get bitten every time I try)

Sure:
smart bookmarks bar (1.4.2):  hides bookmarks' names in the bookmarks bar

I also use favicon picker 2 (0.4.2.0): allows to replace bookmark icons
using the properties dialog. I use those add-ons in Firefox 2 and 3.

HTH!

Sort of.  It does bookmarklets just fine.  Here are some I've made:
http://derosia.com/bookmarklets/  There are hundreds more.

That said, they aren't NEARLY as powerful as Galeon's Smart Bookmarks.
For instance, as far as I know you can't use an arbitrary image for the
bookmark.  That was by far my favorite feature.

Since Firefox can't do that, and I think the site icons are worthless, I
went the other way, and removed the icons, and go text only on my
bookmarks.  If someone knows how to use an arbitrary image for firefox
bookmarks, I'd LOVE know how.

Here's mys screenshot:

well, I joined this mailing list on 2005, so I missed all those
heated discussions. Do you think that the "nervous atmosphere" still
applies? I assume that this is the reason for which you just sigh,
instead of starting to talk about your suggestions.

Personally I don't see any heated debate here, this mailing list was
more like a graveyard, and I was just shouting into it, like during
the night :) Nobody replied me for months, until today.

Why shouldn't we try to talk about it, maybe there's still hope?

Yes it can, see my former reply to Felix to know what add-ons to use.

I would be interested.

I'm a long-time user, and I'd love to see some development on it.  The
one thing that /really/ keeps me with galeon is the tab completion in
the location bar.  I don't use that many bookmarks (but a series of
smart bookmarks), but rely more on tab completion to get where I
want.  All the other stupid browsers switch to some other input field
on TAB, which is /not/ what I want.  I want bash-like tab completion
(and everyone else wants it too, they just don't know it yet).
