hello everyone,

today's mystery bird can be viewed here:

i am rather dubious that anyone can ID this bird to species, so I'll be happy if it is identified to family, and thrilled if someone can ID it to genus!

the most recently demystified mystery bird was a Chipping Sparrow, Spizella passerina, courtesy of photographer Janice Sweet (a new photographer to the mystery birds);

this species apparently causes birders a lot of grief during the annual Christmas Bird Count, so I hope that you pay special attention to this bird as a learning experience.

This is a disturbing but important video about a university research group who investigates and documents the many thousands of tons of plastic garbage that is photodegrading in the North Pacific Gyre;

excellent news: the special birding project for a high-poverty NYC classroom that I donated to and had adopted as a special project for us to focus on, was totally funded! you are so amazing! this group of fifth graders are going to be so happy tomorrow morning when their teacher tells them this amazing news!

Last but not least, i am proud and thrilled beyond words to report that thanks to the generosity of several wonderful people, my DonorsChoose Challenge qualified for at least $2K in matching funds from Hewlett-Packard as of yesterday evening! but there's still time to win more matching funds (today is the deadline) -- and we still have one more week of fund-raising to go, so let's be sure to donate to help improve kids' educations and brighten their futures;

i've already chosen another bird-based project for a high-poverty 3rd grade classroom in Virginia. this lesson focuses on owls -- and what can be more fascinating to Harry Potter fans than learning about owls?

cheers and many thanks for your help,
