Greetings,

Here is a new book that may relate to your interest. EarthTrek is a trilogy about the search for Truth in human’s journey on the face of our beloved
blue planet: the Earth. EarthTrek Trilogy Volume 1: What is All The Fuss about Religion?

This first book in EarthTrek trilogy is a comparison study mainly between the three major monotheism in the world (Judaism, Christianity and Islam).
This book may give you satisfactory answers to the universal nagging questions such as: "What is religion?", "Is there proof that God exists?" "Is
religion necessary in life?" "Is there a right religion?" and "What are these wars in the name of God all about?"

The book ends with a conclusion that all religions, be they monotheism or polytheism originally came from the same Source. Some of the information in
this book might be truly shocking for most readers, except for open minded Truth Seekers.

Removing names from INSTALL

I propose to remove the "We are..." section from our INSTALL
document. It is generated by src/distrib/notes/common/main.

The entire (quite large!) section feels rather vain and adds nothing
to the document other than size. It is a relic from the days before
our website was the main source of this kind of information. All of
the information given in "We are..." is quite easily found online,
where people are more likely to be looking for that information. I'd
like to keep (or rather, make) INSTALL lean, so that it is simply a
document about _INSTALL_ing NetBSD, like its name suggests.

Oh, and since we seem to think that people want to print this document
out, please won't you think of the poor trees wasted by this extra
fluff? ;)

I'd like to remove the section (and update the new-developer welcome
text) in a week unless someone can think of a strong reason not to.

Hi,

I tried cross compiling of NetBSD kernel for my netbook
following the instructions on
http://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-build.html

I had not booted my netbook with the crosscompiled kernel
before someone pointed me that
- I must copy kernel modules as well under /stand directory, and
- It couldn't boot with grub and I should let grub boot boot(8).

Chances are other people would confused with these point.
So It would be good to update the document.

Thanks,
Iraq.

Sehr geehrter,

If you're getting into this sort of endeavour, you might want to have a
look at the 181 open doc-bug PRs so you're not duplicating any efforts.
There are some interesting things in there, like this:
http://www.netbsd.org/cgi-bin/query-pr-single.pl?number=9627

(I'm sure there are some old documentation PRs that are no longer
relevant and can be closed, for that matter. There are duplicates
complaining about IPF documentation being out of date or incomplete,
for instance.)

Frankly, I had no idea that this would account to that many printed pages.
In this case going section-per-section is probably indeed the best solution,
ergonomically and otherwise.

As for Hubert's comment, well yes, luck and a lot of patience is needed :-).

I count 563 files for all man8 manual pages plus a small set of man1
commands which are for "system operation" (sbin or libexec).

They are made up of 287 different copyrights and licenses.

Stripping out copyrights, there are still around 109 different licenses.

That is after stripping out extra noise like unrelated credits, RCS IDs,
miscellaneous comments, etc. and attempting to merge superfluous
whitespace and to better format lines (simply for comparisons).

The differences are: slight wording, different clauses, different
institutes/contributors/authors/etc in the disclaimer.

Later I may look closer to figure out if some of the 109 above are
actually the same.

I am trying to figure out how to get all these included in a physical
product (no computer media). If I use a very small font size and two
columns per page, maybe I can fit them on 15 sheets of paper (both sides).
I'd like to reduce this more.

What tools do you all use to figure out compliance with licenses?

man refuse says to use -lfuse.

That is what the source I was using also uses. I changed to -lrefuse and
it worked.

It should probably be -lrefuse unless a symlink was intended?

src/gnu/usr.bin/groff/tmac/mdoc.local defines the available Lb macros (I
changed -lfuse -lrefuse in mine.)

src/gnu/dist/groff/tmac/groff_mdoc.man documents the Lb libraries
available -- it is missing at least a few (for example libbluetooth,
libopenpgpsdk, libprop, libpuffs, librefuse, libsdb, ...)

Is -lrefuse (not -lfuse) correct?

Should the man page for mdoc(7) be updated to list all the Lb choices?
> >is ENETDOWN mentioned. I could go on.
>
> You can start with the opengroup case, but they don't mention the
> network related errors either. Perhaps mention that if the file
> descriptor refers to a socket, then all the errors from send can be
> returned.

Opengroup got that far:

http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/000095399/functions/write.html

"If fildes refers to a socket, write() shall be equivalent to send() with
no flags set."

I take it, though, that you mean our implementation asserts conformance
with SuSv3?  It's easy to document what these things are supposed to do;
it's hard to know exactly what's true about them.

http://www.opengroup.org/comm/press/15feb06.htm

I missed that announcement at the time. IIUC, we can use opengroup's docs
verbatim? That would be nice, particularly if they're in a format that is
or can be converted to mdoc. Where are they?

I'm confused about SuSv3, though. Austin says it was approved in December
and is published by TOG. I registered, yet everything I see at
http://www.unix.org/single_unix_specification/ says "The Open Group Base
Specifications Issue 6 IEEE Std 1003.1, 2004 Edition". Not 2008.

Perhaps we should adopt the opengroup socket API docs wholesale and edit
them for any specifics we already mention. Then we can add to the BUGS
section whenever practice deviates from theory until a kernel hacker
narrows the difference.
