g4u 2.4alpha4 is available for testing
Again much more time has passed than I expected, but over the past few days
I've made sure that g4u compiles against the latest NetBSD-current sources, and
so I'm making g4u 2.4alpha4 available for resting.

What is g4u? ``g4u ("ghosting for unix") is a NetBSD-based bootfloppy/CD-ROM
that allows easy cloning of PC harddisks to deploy a common setup on a number
of PCs using FTP. The floppy/CD offers two functions. The first is to upload
the compressed image of a local harddisk to a FTP server, the other is to
restore that image via FTP, uncompress it and write it back to disk. Network
configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the harddisk is processed as an image,
any filesystem and operating system can be deployed using g4u. Easy cloning of
local disks as well as partitions is also supported.''

Get it now:
     * ISO: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha4.iso
     * compressed ISO: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha4.iso.zip
     * First floppy: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha4-1.fs
     * 2nd floppy: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha4-2.fs
     * 3rd floppy: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha4-3.fs
     * all 3 floppies: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha4.fs.zip
     * sources: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha4.tgz

What's new in g4u 2.4alpha4:

     * Make this build with NetBSD-current as of 2009-08-30
     * Trim kernel some more (NFS server, quotas)
     * Put only on the CD what's really needed (31MB->5MB)
     * Drivers for:
           o Marvell Hercules-I/II SATA controller
           o SiI SteelVine SATA controllers
           o Attansic/Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet cards
           o Attansic/Atheros L1E Ethernet cards & PHY
           o SD/MMC cards as media - feedback highly appreciated!

Again, I'd like to hear any reports if this version works better or worse than
any previous alpha version or release, esp. under the light that this version
is (another...) attempt to switch to ACPI, which is on by default in NetBSD
now. Also, I'd appreciate any reports if using SD/MMC cards on internal card
readers work as media - I do not have any hardware to test this. Let me hear if
it works for you! If things go well, I want to put this out as 2.5 before it
gets old again. ;-)

Enjoy!

  - Hubert
EuroBSDCon 2009 - Call for Papers
9th European BSD Conference
September 18 - 20, 2009
University of Cambridge, UK
http://2009.eurobsdcon.org/

Introduction

The European BSD Community is once again gathering for
EuroBSDcon. In 2009, we invite you to join us in Cambridge,
England for the latest in discussion, dissemination and
development of material from the many BSDs and their related
communities. This, the ninth European BSD conference is a
great opportunity to present new ideas to the community and
to meet some of the developers behind the different BSDs.

The two day conference program (September 19 - 20) will be
complemented by a tutorial day preceding the conference
(Sept 18).

Call for Papers

The Conference is inviting authors to submit innovative and
original papers not submitted to other European conferences on the
applications, architecture, implementation, performance and security of
BSD-derived operating systems. Investigations on economic aspects regarding the
operation of BSD systems are also welcome. Topics of interest for the EuroBSD
Conference 2009 include, but are not limited to:

         application development and deployment
         device drivers
         security and safe coding practices
         methods others should know about
         system administration: techniques and tools of the trade
         operational and economic aspects

Prospective authors of contributions to the technical program are
requested to submit an abstract via http://2009.eurobsdcon.org/ .
All submissions will be acknowledged. Presentations may last from
15 to 45 minutes - please indicate how long you would like.

This is the initial call for papers; a more focussed call based on
initial accepted submissions will follow in March 2009. We will
begin accepting talks early in 2009.

Authors of accepted submissions should provide a full paper for
publication in the conference proceedings and give permission to the
organizers to publish the results in the printed proceedings and on
the conference web site at www.eurobsdcon.org

Call for Tutorial Proposals

Selected tutorials on practical and problem-solving aspects of
BSD-derived operating systems will be offered on the day before the
Conference. The tutorials will be presented by speakers who
have wide experience in developing and administering the different
BSDs. Potential tutorial themes could include, but are not limited to:

         Safe coding practices to provide secure solutions
         System load testing and tuning
         BSD in a large network
         Solving sets of problems

If you are interested in presenting a tutorial, please contact the
organisers on eurobsdcon@... with what you're thinking. Initial
exploratory conversations are as welcome as full proposals.

Sponsorship Opportunities

We are seeking companies or institutions to sponsor various
elements of the conference in order to keep delegate fees as
low as possible. Sponsorship opportunities include: paying
for a speaker's travel or accommodation; providing bursaries
for delegates who cannot pay the conference fee themselves;
sponsoring catering, lunches, or the conference dinner.

All sponsors will be listed in the conference proceedings
and included on our website with a link back to your
site. You will also have the opportunity to provide
literature for distribution in delegate packs. Please
contact the UKUUG Secretariat (office@...) to discuss
the possibilities or see http://www.eurobsdcon.org

Important Dates

The BSD Certification Group (BSDCG) is a non-profit organization
committed to creating and maintaining a global certification standard
for system administration on BSD-based operating systems. The BSDCG
works with the BSD and sysadmin communities in order to provide a
practical and relevant certification. The BSD Certification Group
was founded in February 2005. Details about the group and the BSDA
certification are available via http://www.bsdcertification.org.
             EuroBSDCon 2009 - Cambridge, UK
                  18-20 September 2009

The Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) family of computer operating
systems is derived from software developed at the University of
California at Berkeley. The various family members (Dragonfly-,
Free-, Net- and OpenBSD, among others) are extensively used both for
embedded appliances and for large internet servers and have an
excellent reputation for stability and state-of-the- art
technology. BSD-derived software is a driving force for IT research
and development and is well-received as a building block in commercial
software due to its unique license scheme.

The ninth European BSD conference is a great opportunity to present
new ideas to the community and to meet some of the developers behind
the different BSDs.

The two day conference program (September 19 - 20) will be complemented
by a tutorial day preceding the conference (Sept 18).

Call for Papers

The Conference is inviting authors to submit innovative and original
papers not submitted to other European conferences on the
applications, architecture, implementation, performance and security
of BSD-derived operating systems. Investigations on economic aspects
regarding the operation of BSD systems are also welcome. Topics of
interest for the EuroBSD Conference 2009 include, but are not limited to:

    - embedded application development and deployment
    - device drivers
    - security and safe coding practices
    - methods others should know about
    - system administration: techniques and tools of the trade
    - operational and economic aspects

Prospective authors of contributions to the technical program are
requested to submit an abstract by email to eurobsdcon@... All
submissions will be acknowledged. Presentations may last from 15 to 45
minutes - please indicate how long you would like.

This is the initial call for papers; a more focussed call based on
initial accepted submissions will follow in March 2009. We will begin
accepting talks early in 2009.

Authors of accepted submissions should provide a full paper for
publication in the conference proceedings and give permission to the
organizers to publish the results in the printed proceedings and on
the conference web site.

Call for Tutorial Proposals

Selected tutorials on practical and problem-solving aspects of
BSD-derived operating systems will be offered on the day before the
Conference. The tutorials will be presented by speakers who have wide
experience in developing and administering the different BSDs.
Potential tutorial themes could include, but are not limited to:

    - Safe coding practices to provide secure solutions
    - System load testing and tuning
    - BSD in a large network
    - Solving sets of problems

If you are interested in presenting a tutorial, please contact the
organisers on eurobsdcon@... with what you're thinking. Initial
exploratory conversations are as welcome as full proposals.

Sponsorship Opportunities

We are seeking companies or institutions to sponsor various elements
of the conference in order to keep delegate fees as low as
possible. Sponsorship opportunities include: paying for a speaker's
travel or accommodation; providing bursaries for delegates who cannot
pay the conference fee themselves; sponsoring catering, lunches, or
the conference dinner.

All sponsors will be listed in the conference proceedings and included
on our website with a link back to your site. You will also have the
opportunity to provide literature for distribution in delegate packs.
Please contact the UKUUG Secretariat (office@...) to discuss the
possibilities.

Important Dates

    Final abstract deadline: May 31st 2009
    Final tutorial deadline: May 31st Final

g4u 2.4alpha3 is available for testing
  * g4u 2.4alpha3 is available for testing

After a lot of time, a lot of distractions, and a lot of changes to NetBSD's
install system, I've finally found time again to adjust g4u to the current
world order, and I'm happy to finally have g4u 2.4alpha3 available for testing.

Get it now:
     * ISO:            http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha3.iso
     * compressed ISO: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha3.iso.zip
     * First floppy:   http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha3-1.fs
     * 2nd floppy:     http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha3-2.fs
     * 3rd floppy:     http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha3-3.fs
     * all 3 floppies: http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha3.fs.zip
     * sources:        http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/g4u-2.4alpha3.tgz

What's new in g4u 2.4alpha3:
     * Support Bluetooth keyboard and USB hubs
     * ACPI support is enabled by default. SMP is, too, but that's not
       really used in g4u; They can both be disabled form the bootloader in
       case of problems.
     * Moved away from GENERIC kernel back to customized kernel, to avoid
       bloat through too many drivers that aren't needed in g4u (audio,
       video, ...)
     * The build structure was adjusted to NetBSD's latest framework, which
       loads the kernel from CD, then loads the ramdisk, too, before
       starting the kernel. No more kernel+ramdisk for now. (Need to
       re-evaluate situation for PXE)
     * Drivers for:
           o AMD CS5535/CS5536 and Intel PIIX4 PCI bridges
           o Areca SATA PCI RAID controllers
           o Workbit NinjaATA-32 CardBus IDE controllers
           o Realtek 8139C+/8169/8169S/8110S cardbus wlan cards
           o Geode CSC and ScanLogic SL811HS USB controllers
           o Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN
           o JMicron JMC2[56]0 ethernet
           o Atheros L2 Fast-Ethernet
           o Realtek 8139C+/8169/8169S/8110S cardbus network cards
     * ... and any driver updates, bug fixes and other enhancements from
       NetBSD-current
     * This version of g4u was again cross-compiled on Mac OS X. To get
       your own build, grap NetBSD-current sources from yesterday
       (20081122), unpack the g4u source .tgz then "cd .../src ; sh
       g4u-build" and report what happens.

I'd like to hear any reports if this version works better or worse than any
previous alpha version or release, esp. under the light that this version is
(another...) attempt to switch to ACPI, which is on by default in NetBSD now.
Let me hear if it works, or if it hangs for you!

The sixth EuroBSDCon - the annual European BSD conference for users
and developers begins Friday September 14th. It's being held at
Symbion Science Park in Copenhagen, Denmark. Come, meet and talk to
BSD people from all over the world.

Program
-------

20+ interesting speakers in a program which includes:

Kirk McKusick: Kirk is the epitome of BSD - an all-time Berkley guy
will talk about the history of the UFS file system.

Sam Leffler: Sam is another of the original BSD people. For a while
he has been working a lot with wireless networks and and his name can
be found in a lot of the open source wireless code. At the conference
he will be talking about long distance wireless.

Marc Balmer: Marc became an active OpenBSD developer in 2004 and has
since be responsible for several prominent OpenBSD projects. At the
conference he will talk about Support for Radio Clocks in OpenNTPD.

Steven Murdoch: Steven is working on computer security research at
Cambridge University and he will be talking about hidden channels
between computers which even the best firewall cannot close.

John Hartmann: Very few if any UNIX people have heard about John
Hartmann, despite the fact that he completed the work Dennis and Ken
started with pipes. John will talk about "CMS pipes" a minor and
cheap entry in the IBM product catalogue which is a radical
generalization of the UNIX pipe concept.

Announcing the g4u 2.2 release
  * Announcing the g4u 2.2 release

G4u ("ghost for unix") is a NetBSD-based bootfloppy/CD-ROM that allows
easy cloning of PC harddisks to deploy a common setup on a number of
PCs using FTP, and I'm happy to announce the first release of the g4u
harddisk image cloning software since one year now. G4u is freely
available for most uses, military and optional commercial are
available on request, and donations are always welcome.
The most important changes in this release lie in an improved
infrastructure that allow more flexibility, basically restricting the
2.88MB limit that g4u had so far. Here's the full list of changes:

  * The build infrastructure was changed: The kernel used is now
    based on a GENERIC kernel with ramdisk hooks, instead of a
    customized INSTALL kernel. There's still a ramdisk embedded in
    the kernel, and that kernel+ramdisk are used to build the ISO
    and floppy-set. My main motivation for this release is to
    utilize NetBSD's 'makefs -t cd9660' and bootxx_cd9660 for
    creating the ISO version, the floppy splits the kernel+ramdisk
    over (now) three floppies using NetBSD's ustarfs. This approach
    allows growing the ramdisk with more programs without the 2.88MB
    limit imposed by harddisk-emulation-booting and mkisofs before,
    to an (sort of) arbitrary size. Size restrictions right now are
    the size of the CD and (more likely) the size of the ramdisk
    that can fit into RAM, see below.
  * Password entry in all scripts is now without echo (added stty(1)
    to run 'stty -noecho')
  * The G4U kernel is now a real NetBSD "GENERIC" kernel with an
    embedded ramdisk, with all the devices supported there. The
    trade-in for the reduced maintenance costs are a minimum of 16MB
    RAM needed now. Please let me know if this is an issue!
  * Updated hardware support to match NetBSD-current's GENERIC as of
    20060406, adding support for Workbit NinjaSCSI-32 (pci); Symbios
    53c875 SCSI and newer (pci); Qlogic ESP406/FAS408 SCSI (pcmcia);
    Cardbus SCSI including AdvanSys 1200[A,B], 9xx[U,UA] SCSI,
    Adaptec ADP-1480, Workbit NinjaSCSI-32; Intel 82597 10GbE LR NIC
    (pci); Sun Microelectronics STP2002-STQ (pci); Intel
    PRO/Wireless 2100 and 2200BG (pci; may not work due to missing
    firmware); PCnet-PCI Ethernet (pci); ralink wifi (pci); 3com
    3cr990 (pci); VIATech VT612X Gigabit Ethernet (pci); Neterion
    (S2io) Xframe-I 10GbE (pci); BayStack 660 (802.11FH/DS, pcmcia);
    Cardbus NICs including Atheros 5210/5211/5212 802.11, ADMtek
    ADM8211 (802.11), 3Com 3C575TX, Intel i8255x, Realtek
    8129/8139/8180L (802.11) and DECchip 21143; CDC, Ethernet
    Networking Control Model and Davicom DM9601 based USB-ethernet
    adapters; Atmel AT76C50XX based adapters and Ralink Technology
    RT25x0 802.11a/b/g USB WLAN adapters
  * I've added an item "What FTP server software to use?" to the FAQ
    list.
  * I've added a reference to the g4u blog (or rather, the g4u part
    of my NetBSD blog :).

For more information on g4u see the homepage at

  * Announce: g4u 2.2beta2 released

After more than a year of distraction and work in the background, I'm happy to
announce a beta release of the upcoming g4u 2.2 release. The most imortant
changes are not user-visible but in the build process, but as a result of this,
the 2.88MB size restriction is gone and now only the machine's RAM is the
limit, allowing me to add a lot of drivers again.

You can find all the details in the history section of the g4u webpage:

 	http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/

Those interested in some development activities can also have a look at the g4u
portion of my weblog, I've added a note to this at
http://www.feyrer.de/g4u/#blog.

Last, let me thank all those that have donated money to make this beta-release
of g4u possible. I'm still working on my PhD thesis (with no financial aid or
work contract), and your donations make it possible for me to continue work on
g4u and not starve. Those wishing to express their gratitude for where g4u is
today, please donate via paypal@..., or get in contact for means other
than paypal. Thanks!

  - Hubert

Hello folks,

BSDCan 2005 proved that the first annual BSDCan was no fluke. We've
demonstrated repeatedly that we know how to put on a good conference.
It's hard to follow on from such success, but we know we can keep
improving. It is with great pleasure that I announce the BSDCan 2006 Call
For Papers.

BSDCan 2006 will be held May 12-13, 2006, in Ottawa at University of
Ottawa. We are now requesting proposals for papers.

The papers should be written with a very strong technical content
bias. Papers and proposals of a business development or marketing
nature are not appropriate for this venue.

The schedule is:

19 Dec 2005	Proposal acceptance begins
19 Jan 2006	Proposal acceptance ends
19 Feb 2006	Confirmation of accepted proposals
19 Mar 2006	Abstracts due
19 Apr 2006	Formatted final papers must arrive no later than this date

Please submit all proposals to papers@...

NOTE: This is the schedule for formal papers. We are also accepting
submissions for for talks and presentations. If you have a proposal,
