new speed camera at PoolsvilleThree of us went for a ride a couple of weekends ago, and all three of us
received a lovely photo in the mail of ourselves riding over some white lines going into Poolsville. Mine was 44 in a 30. There's a 30mph sign .2 miles before the camera. I don't recall whether I saw the sign but if you don't see it or don't take notice of it, there are few other visual cues that you're entering a built-up area. Still seems pretty rural even where the camera is set up. I checked it out in Google Streetview - and that's how I know this camera is relatively new. I found the piece of road where the camera is set up - there are white lines across the road in my speed camera portrait, but not in the Google image. Likely that the Google image is not much more or less than a year old, so camera is a new addition. here's the google link http://tinyurl.com/nrf8b2 Anyone know of a map of area speed cameras? Re: new speed camera at PoolsvilleOuch! I prefer the cameras at Deals Gap. Killboy gets much more
interesting shots. :-/ I have some friends who ride up in that area, I'll be passing on the warning. Re: new speed camera at PoolsvilleIs anyone running the speed/red-light camera alerts on their GPS? This
site: http://www.poi-factory.com claims to have 290 locations in the DC metro area. Seems like a deal for $5. -Euan On Tue, Jun 30, 2009 at 12:31 PM, Trevor Angel <trevangel@...> wrote: > Three of us went for a ride a couple of weekends ago, and all three of us > received a lovely photo in the mail of ourselves riding over some white > lines going into Poolsville. Re: new speed camera at PoolsvilleI was in Korea last week, and took a ~400 km road trip (in a cage) from
Daegu, around the south of the country. There are speed cams everywhere (on both the 4 lanes and 2 lanes), but the sat nav from the rental car place not only knew the camera locations, it would flash an obnoxious warning (and a verbal warning in Korean) and give you the right speed to cruise past the cameras. Of course all the other drivers on the road have the sat nav too, so everyone slams on the brakes to go by the speed cam at 100, 80, 60 kph, what have you, and then they immediately wick it back up to "normal" speed (120+ on the freeways), making driving on the main highways a little nerve-wracking, so say the least. Didn't see LEOs doing traffic enforcement anywhere along the highways. I'm wondering if I should be expecting another... >Is anyone running the speed/red-light camera alerts on their GPS? No, but I'm looking at iPhone apps that should do the job. I think they are only going to work in areas where there is phone reception, but that should cover most places where cameras are likely to be. One thing that annoys me... I don't know or care where red light cameras are, in fact I'd be happy if they were on every intersection. Too many DC arseholes running reds. I don't consider speeding 10 or 15 over the limit as anything like the same category as red light running. But all the databases have have red light info - I'd like to be able to filter it out, leaving only the speed cams. Re: new speed camera at PoolsvilleI signed up for it at the beginning of the year. I get the entire US. I go
about once a week and download both sets. I don't know that it has "saved" me, but it has reminded me in sufficient time to slow down. I have not used it on the bike - just the cage. The site has all sorts of attractions to download. Weird tourist attractions, rest stops, Starbucks, etc. I especially like Triple-D. I had been building my own database, but I just downloaded theirs...
