note changes and pitch bending

I have an application that I am porting to the ALSA API that previously
directly accessed a Sound Blaster Audigy board.  I have ported the sound
code in the application I am working on to ALSA and I setup timidity for
synth capability (the application uses about 11 to 13 channels of audio
all by itself.

Here is the problem.  The audigy boards accepted pitch bend values
throughout the entire 16383 value set.  However, timidity seems to only
allow pitch variation over only a 2 note range.

The application I am trying to get working sends a sequence of events
directly to the alsa port that timidity is setting up.  The audio
however had all kinds of crackles and pops in it especially during not
transitions.

Is there a way to tell timidity to recalibrate it's pitch bend range to
allow for a wider range over say 2 octaves instead of 2 notes???  Also,
it looks like it is using only the highest 13 bits instead of 14 bits
like the spec calls for.

Thanks,
Jared
