> A few follow up questions:
>
> 1) Regarding the concern about running on internal flash. I don't care about voicemail, will probably use Google Voice for that. I was able to load the asterisk16 and asterisk16-sounds packages into my OpenWRT NSLU2 with ~1MB of space left over. Assuming I can fit those packages and don't care about voicemail, is there still a concern about using internal flash?

No concern. But if you have the file system on flash (internal or USB stick) you need to minimize the writes to it because flash has a limited number of erasure cycles (about 100,000 for SLC NAND or NOR flash and for the high capacity MLC NAND it goes down to 5,000 cycles).
You can disable asterisk logging and CDR-s if you don't need them or just put all the files asterisk is writing often (like database) in ramfs (and make a script to copy it from/to flash at startup/shutdown)

>
> 2) SheevaPlug looks interesting. Is there any other embedded platform that works well with asterisk and has a good user community (i.e. support through forums, etc.) behind it? Basically I'm looking for a pretty-darn reliable, low-power, asterisk appliance for home. It has to do the job and pass the "wife test". A little more horsepower (i.e. ability to run codecs) would also be a nice bonus, but I don't know that I really need that...

I don't know about another embedded platform.
SheevaPlug has a lot more CPU power, RAM and flash but it's still not able to run other codecs than NSLU2 because it does not have fp hardware.
You should be fine only with G711. I had to change a provider because he was accepting only G729, but otherwise no problem.

Both platforms are very reliable. I had Asterisk up on NSLU2 sometimes up for about a year without any problem.
Now I got a small UPS so my phone system stays up in case of power failure (especially now that it controls and stores my security camera videos too).

Cheers,
> > > 1) I'm installing this at home, where I will be running a handful of extensions (SIP phones), and probably a few FXS/FXO ports (using an external gateway) for local analog phones and PSTN access, and a couple SIP and/or IAX trunks to VoIP provider(s). Probably no more than a couple of calls simultaneously.
> > >
> > > Is this kind of setup reasonable to run on an NSLU2? I'm fine with limiting the capabilities (i.e. turning features off, etc.), but I want to make sure that the voice quality is rock solid. The NSLU2 won't be running anything else other than asterisk.
> > >

Thank you both for replying. I will explain better some points that are causing misunderstandings. Here where I live, all the gsm operators have tariff plans where you don't pay for sms, calls, mms and even video calls between numbers. You pay around 10 euros per month which you can use to call to other operators and numbers. So, the idea is getting all the sip calls routed by the gateway (with a SIM card on it) to my mobile phone. And if I want to make calls to my SIP contacts...well you know what happens. There was a company here who sold the Mobigater mini for around 100 euros which I consider cheap (Mike, I looked at the Portech but the prices here an in the UK are prohibitive...). Even if I bought directly from the mobigater makers, the price is 84 euros + delivery costs. So, I consider the mobigater a good option because it's usb powered and is supported by asterisk already, if you compile the code from the GSMOpen project.

Pedro

P.S. They said a long time ago that they plan a lan port model but till today, nothing happened ...
> I know that the GE BT Cell Fusion Gateway is not to fancy, but it can use my cell phone (no extra SIM card required) and is dirt cheap (CAD $40 = £22.9).
> Cheers,
>
>
But the original poster was contemplating the Mobigater, which from what
I can see needs a SIM card, so I was proposing another solution that had
the same requirement.

Your solution is, of course, less expensive, but I was working to the
original poster's apparent requirement.

Hi Pedro,

One way is to use an USB bluetooth dongle and asterisk add-on chan_mobile.
Another twisted way is to connect a GE Bluetooth Cell Fusion Gateway to an FXO port.

The first solution makes more sense, but I assumed that finding the BT dongle that works and the risk that it might not work with my cell phones made me consider the second solution.
The price of the GE BT gateway (CAD 40 at London Drugs) and the fact that I have an extra unused FXO laying around sealed the deal.
Also this allows to have the BT gateway and the Asterisk server on different locations.

It works fine with my iPhone. Now I can answer cell incoming calls from any extension in the house.
Dialing out on my cell also works but is slow and asterisk need to prepend ##1 or ##2 (I believe) to dial trough the first paired phone or trough the second. So, no ability like with chan_mobile to know if a BT is connected or not and take the proper actions in the dialplan.

Cheers,
> I'm looking at possibly installing asterisk on an NSLU2 running OpenWRT 8.09.2-RC2. I've installed the latest asterisk packages from the OpenWRT trunk:
>
> root@OpenWrt:~# opkg list_installed | grep asterisk
> asterisk16 - 1.6.1-rc1-1.1 -
> asterisk16-sounds - 1.6.1-rc1-1.1 -
>
> A few questions:
>
> 1) I'm installing this at home, where I will be running a handful of extensions (SIP phones), and probably a few FXS/FXO ports (using an external gateway) for local analog phones and PSTN access, and a couple SIP and/or IAX trunks to VoIP provider(s). Probably no more than a couple of calls simultaneously.
>
> Is this kind of setup reasonable to run on an NSLU2? I'm fine with limiting the capabilities (i.e. turning features off, etc.), but I want to make sure that the voice quality is rock solid. The NSLU2 won't be running anything else other than asterisk.
>
> ... applicable for asterisk 1.6 on OpenWRT 8.09.2-RC2? If not, are there any examples for this setup that are available?
>
> 3) I chose OpenWRT because I'm familiar with it (run it on my router), and I'd like to run everything off internal flash if possible - to simplify things. Is there any reason why one of the other firmware choices would be better for running dedicated asterisk?
>

Hi,

I ran about the same setup like the one you intend to use on Unslung and then OpenSlug for about 4 years (NSLU2 dedicated for * with file system on USB stick), until I moved to SheevaPlug this spring.
The voice quality was perfect. I was even surprised that command "show translations" that calculates the duration of transcoding for 1s of voice from one codec to another displays better results on NSLU2 (@266MHz) than SheevaPlug (@1GHz).
So there was no real reason to move to SheevaPlug other than the desire to play with my new toy.

The sample Unslung config files are for asterisk 1.2, but there is no special setup (comparing with a PC setup) other than loading the modules that you use to save memory.

Running from internal flash is not a a very good idea.
Asterisk package is pretty large and you will need sound files (from asterisk-sounds package) plus you will want additional space to store the voice-mail messages.
SheevaPlug has 512MB internal flash, so plenty of room there.

I'm not familiar with the openWRT so I cannot give you any advice here.

Transfer the file to your Asus router (preferably in a temporary directory) and execute:

tar -zxvf asterisk_1_2_sample_slug_config.tar.gz

This samples are old (for asterisk 1.2) and from optware you probably got a newer version of asterisk (1.4 or 1.6).

Some of the commands functions changed, but you can use it as an example of how to configure *.

On the twiki you can find updated versions (for * 1.4) of the macros used in this sample. See "Useful dialplan macros" section on this page:
> AFAIR, the issue is not related to chan_sip, but to some missing
> libraries from the firmware.

I'm using a complete debian system on the NSLU2 (debian armel lenny) and
it works fine. The advantage is that everything works "out of the box".
My asterisk system has no problem to send email with whatever smtp
> NSLU2 has only 32M of RAM, but this should not be a problem.
>
> You should configure esmtp (or ssmtp) and try it first from the shell
> command line. After you make sure that it works then you should
> configure asterisk.
>
> Are you using Unslung or SlugOS ?
> esmtp is available on Unslung and setup instructions are on the wiki
> ssmtp is available on SlugOS. There ere no instruction posted but it
> works too.

We have produced a G.729 optimized codec which allows you to run up to 500 G.729 transcoded channels on a single Asterisk server (or Freeswitch).

Also, we have a floating license model so you can manage the licenses across your whole infrastructure.

Prices as low as £3.99 per channel - have a look at the free trial on:

Hi Rand,

The default path to the asterisk.conf is /etc/asterisk and I believe that on Optware has been patched to be /opt/etc/asterisk.

Also, you can specify the config file to be used in the command line using the -C command line option:
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+options

asterisk.conf will configure the directories used by asterisk (including the directory for the config files).

For Optware the paths should be like this:

[directories]
astetcdir => /opt/etc/asterisk
astmoddir => /opt/lib/asterisk/modules
astvarlibdir => /opt/var/lib/asterisk
astagidir => /opt/var/lib/asterisk/agi-bin
astspooldir => /opt/var/spool/asterisk
astrundir => /opt/var/run
astlogdir => /opt/var/log/asterisk

Usually Asterisk comes with sample configuration files. You will have to write your own configs, based on this samples.

Good luck,
> Everyone,
>
> I recently loaded Asterisk on my WRT-54gl with 2gig sd. (did the ipkg, jffs, optware etc...
>
> Although it runs - when is I issue $asterisk -cvvv I can see that it can't quite find the config files. I guess that the init file needs to be modified correctly. Here is some of the output of the errors.
> Otherwise, asterisk does come up with the >CLI command but no modules nor configs are loaded - even though they are in their respective folders.
>
> typical - error is
> Parsing '/etc/asterisk/modules.conf' : Not found no such file or directories ......
>
> Here is the current init - which I think needs to be modified to direct the program to the correct locations - but I don't know how to modify it. Can someone tell me where in the init to direct the program to the correct directories?

Hello Rand,

Which version of asterisk are you installing from optware?
aterisk14 and asterisk16 should come preconfigured with the right directories.
With optware, everything is installed under /opt and therefor your
config files will be under /opt/etc/asterisk.
