I did get that sort of feeling too. Very similar to attitudes among
sysadmins where I used to work - always keen to be seen by management
(invariably proud of their hardworking staff) to be 'fixing things'
(almost always trivial), never to put in the effort up front to save
those trivial jobs and do something more constructive. I took the view
the computer was there to save the legwork. The company went belly-up a
year ago; I can't imagine why.

I don't blame you. I did a couple of years ago start collecting and
collating questions with a view to creating some sort of
statistical-match 'bot, but gave up because I felt there was no serious
chance of the work being used.

I prefer the one-step method - I think about re-subscribing, and then
decide it's not worth the effort :-) I'll wait until I need help(*):
that may sound selfish, but while I have tried to offer help on 'users'
where I could, the noise level is just too great, and I'm not prepared
to have the self-same issues thrust before me time and time again.

You were lucky. As far as I know, I was the first to suggest that, and
I suggested the same thing several times from 5+ years ago to 1+ years

One year ago I become disgusted enough to unsubscribe. About two
months ago I subscribed again. The very first message I got from
ooo-users was a rant (from one of the very people who in the past had
answered as above my proposals for autoresponders) about "how to deal
with unsubscribed users". I laughed hard for some minutes, then
remained subscribed with this strategy which I highly recommend to
everybody for that specific mailing list:

1) Always cancel without even opening them all new messages with a
subject which doesn't give a CLEAR idea of what the problem is

2) never waste one second to set up (or discuss) client side header
filters or anything like that to figure out who's subscribed and
who isn't. Whenever you answer at ooo-users, ALWAYS send the reply
to both the OP and the list. Period. Given the context, there's
nothing else sensible you may do. Overall, it would also be much
less traffic for everybody than what comes in today.

Note: please don't ask me about the autoresponder. Nothing personal
about you, but for the reasons above, I have *no* intention to spend
one more minute on that. All I had to say is in the archives, just
look for "procmail". The only reason I stepped in is to suggest you
and everybody else not to stress your liver and go for the 2-step
method above instead.

One issue (at least on 'users') is that some subscribed users claim
never to have subscribed. A seeming impossibility, and presumably
they're either /very/ forgetful, or they've shared their email address
with someone.

There is another possibility to deal with the situation. I suggested on
'users' a while ago (meeting with an unexpected lack of enthusiasm) that
an auto-responder might be constructed (maybe even independently of the
actual lists) that (a) would pick out messages from unsubscribed users
and respond with a likely simple help message plus further info on using
the list, and (b) could pick out any obvious 'please unsubscribe me'
messages and send the necessary list unsub email (obviously the user
would still need to confirm this though).

Quite a bit of up-front effort to get going in a responsible way, but
might be beneficial in the longer term. Or am I missing something?

I have in fact, just very recently, been given the status of project owner
(there can be many 'owners') for the applicable project in order to
add/remove subscribers from both the discuss and users list.

Obviously this (moderator forced unsub) will only be done under extreme
circumstances since I'm sure everyone will agree that getting users to
understand what they have done and to unsub themselves is still the
preference.

I will continue to monitor both lists, but no action will be taken until
plenty of discussion has been had.

Let me know if there are any queries.

Spell check works in OO.o 3.1.1. Yours might not be set up properly.

What manner of security are are referring to? If password-protected

proprietary nature of Microsoft's products OOo cannot legally implement
a means of opening protected MS-Office files (there are numerous

Spelling checker not working

I don't know why, but the spelling checker does not work at all in the latest version of OpenOffice (3.1.1). I sure hope someone can fix it before the next release.

In Synaptic install the OpenOffice.org package and sun-java6-jre
packages. Ubuntu does not include the entire OOo package in the initial
install. This was originally due to CD limitations, but despite the fact
that after the CD/upgrade, they still leave out openoffice.org-base,
...java-common etc.

I agree, auto-complete is frequently a nuisance, as it ass a judgemental
application. Like all applications that make judgemental decisions or do
diagnostics, they are trouble prone and always will be.

A computer has no real intelligence! Only a human being has that. Hence
there are many decisions that they cannot make effectively, especially when
they would need to deal with a large hierarchy of pre-existing information
to do so.

This is what has made OCR, Vectorisation, and certain other applications
problematic and difficult and expensive to develop.

Example: If I scan, OCR and reconstruct a large text item, I find I spend
about 25% of my time scanning, 25% of my time in the OCR (using ABBYY
sprint), and 50% or more in the reconstruction, largely in word, except that
I may have to edit the extracted graphics in Photoshop elements or Gimp.

I may also have to crop and scan the graphics separately, in order to get a
rendition suitable to include in the final document, as I would not want to
scan a lot of stuff in 600 D.P.I. colour when I don't need or want the
colour for the text (but do need the 600 DPI for good OCR).

The graphics can go in 300 DPI colour very nicely, since that is enough for
the human eye when this is printed. Exception: If there is a need to crop
and enlarge, depending on the crop ratio, I may then need to scan at a
higher resolution, crop and then enlarge, trading resolution for size to get
what I need.

Dear Fellow Writers:

I have had this on occasions, especially when the text has been imported or
pasted from another application or possibly a website.

Since this doesn't ALWAYS happen, it suggests that that block of text has a
hidden character in it that may be the problem.

I have also had the experience of the Text to table function not functioning
as would be expected.

Here is my usual solution for some of these anomalies:

1) Paste the text into a DOS .TXT file, then copy it from that file and
paste the results into the Writer file. This usually strips all the HTML
tags and other unwanted formatting that came hidden in the original
selection copied to the clipboard. (I keep this file in my personal
Templates folder and call it TmtTxt.TXT. I also place a shortcut of it into
the Default user startup folder, and adjust the startup size of that
shortcut to minimise.

This will cause the file to load minimised in the tray automatically on
reboot, so it is handy when the rest of the screen is crowded with stuff on
top. One never knows from minute to minute when they are going to need this
resource, so it is handy to have it there.

When you are at the stage of setting the minimise on that shortcut, I
suggest you also set a hotkey (such as {F3}) so if in your regular work it
accidentally gets closed, you can reopen it without pushing other stuff
aside.

2) Before running a text to table command, Open the non-printing characters
option in "View" and look for a series of faint characters at the end of the
lines. These are similar to Hard CR's and cannot be searched, so they have
to be removed individually.

When you remove them, the next line will jump up to the end of the line from
which
You removed that character, so press {enter} and set a line feed that Writer
will cooperate with.

This will cure a lot of the headaches that come with text to which the text
to table command may be applied.

Another suggestion for Text to table:

If I am working in English, before doing the conversion, I will do a series
of search and replaces for characters or combinations of characters that
preceed the place where I want a column (field) break in the future table.
Typically, I replace the string with the original string modified to change
the last character (often a space) to a non-English character, such as Ñ
{alt-165}. When I have pre-edited my block of text this way to get all the
required field shifts covered by one of these Ñ characters, I can then do my
text to table using Ñ as my special character in the text to table command.

When the table is formed, the column breaks should be exactly as was
intended, since it is acting on a character that normally would never appear
in English.

If I see something out on place, I can then press {CTRL-z} to go back and
fix the placing of my Ñ characters and then repeat the text to table
command.

This character can be used with text in any language in which it does not
normally exist (such as French). If you are working in Spanish, you will
need to choose a different character that is not used in Spanish.

Logically, if the block of text is multilingual, the special character must
be one that is not used in any of the included languages - something for us
polyglots to remember.

Now I see this is egging me on to go for breakfast. (guffaw!)

Missing Parts

Hi the List,

I hope that someone has had this problem and has found a fix for it.

I am at present running Ubuntu 9.10, as upgraded from 9.04, and tried to

To make sure that I was doing the 'right thing' I downloaded 'Getting
Started', the 'Writers Guide' and 'Printing Envelopes' from the OOo Wiki

Having tried deleting an un-wanted programme, and had the hassles of
getting rid of hidden dependencies and links so that a 'clean'
re-installation can be made; I would prefer that option be avoided!

Not really...
Anyway, in the MsWrd versions that I know of, there is no such
convenient one-tick-turn-off-all option as in OpenOffice.org Writer.
