Hi,

the OpenOffice.org project will have again a DevRoom at the FOSDEM 2010.
The conference will take place from 6-7 February 2010 in Brussels,
Belgium. Our DevRoom will be on Saturday February 6th from 1:00pm to 7:00pm.

It is up to us to organize an interesting and exciting DevRoom to
present our project and to show that OpenOffice.org offers a wide area
for developers. The DevRoom should attract potential new developers as
well as experienced ones. We should share our knowledge with others,
should organize coding or QA sessions, workshops or talks where we refer
about or highlight a special topic.

You can be part of it!

If you are interested in doing a talk, a workshop or coding/QA session
please let us know. Please submit your proposal on the wiki page

It is not yet guaranteed that we can sponsor our speakers next year
again but it's likely that we can sponsor at least parts of the costs.
So don't hesitate and submit your proposal. We are looking forward to
receive it.
>> I merged the latest fixes I found so far on pootle and from some
>> issues. I created new installsets for the languages that changed:
>>
>> my ja uz fr nl vi ca pt-BR ru gl ko om gu zh-CN or de ta hu lv tr ast
>> id eo es is it
>>
>> You can find the builds here:
>>
>>
>> This cws will be integrated on friday, I know there are only 2 days
>> left for testing but this cws should only cover some minor fixes.
>> Extending the test time is not possible or we violate the release
>> schedule ...
>>
>> Please report any issue *ASAP* !!!!
>>
>> Cheeers,
>> Ivo

A lot of how things are done in the OOoWiki now in the Documentation
Project and other places are simply because that's the best way we knew
how at the time. We're definitely not using the MediaWiki syntax and
parser tools to their full extent. I think we've only brushed the

Not every discovery will be helpful in every place, but look at the
improvements that have been made recently.. the changes you guys made to
> http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User:B_michaelsen/Default_Language_Links_Test
> http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User:DE/B_michaelsen/Default_Language_Links_Test
>
> Maybe that should be used on pretty much all pages that have a
> translation? It would also encourage using the standard locations for
> translations.
>
> This template would only work on the english pages linking to the
> translated pages, but not on a translated page themselves, because to
> navigate from one translated page to another one needs to
> this is a start and a template to use on the translated pages is just a
> little more work.
>
> Opinions? Otherwise, feel free to copy the template into the global
> namespace and use it. ;-)

If I follow this right.. this will only work if the PAGENAMEs are
identical below the ISO lang code. That is not being done with any
consistency on any Wiki docs except the Developer's, Admin and Basic
Guides. Also, as you said it is not working to go from any language
except the English pages.

I've used a variation on this that works both ways, but requires passing
a variable to get around restrictions on the PAGENAME variable. When a
translation is done, the translatior has to do nothing more than copying
the Template name to the translated page... then he/she automatcially
will get all known translated languages.
I've used one template per manual to allow for the dfferent languages
the documents have been translated into. For example the Dev Guide uses:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Template:Documentation/DevGuideLanguages
and the Admin guide uses:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Template:InterWiki_Languages_AdminGuide
(which now that I look at it, needs to be cleaned up... different naming
structure because it was done at different times)

Restrictions on the PAGENAME variable... you can only have the entire
page name including the ISO lang code at the beginning or the very last
subpage (SUBPAGENAME). Short of fiddling with lots of parser coding,
you cannot easily extract everything past the ISO Lang code.

I wonder if there is some combination of the two ideas we can use?

Hi All,

Just for those of you who don't read the UX discuss list. Lutz posted
minutes on the wiki (see his link below). Here is a quote from the
minutes which might interest some of you visual-design-types who want to
be of help in the ODF icon discussions:

    * Current discussions about the project take place in discuss@ux and
dev@marketing; Still, discuss@ux is the preferred mailing list,
which will also be used by this i-team for communication.
    * Feedback is mixed, there are pro-speakers as well as cons.
    * Still no formal UX support in place; Invitation still open; Will
continue without formal UX i-Team member if no-one joins the i-Team.
    * i-Team also still lacking Documentation support; unclear if we
      need it; Lutz will clarify.
    * We do need a build to get the current implementation out into
user's hands for better feedback; Mikhail will work on this.
    * We haven't yet settled on an integration target; it might be
3.2.1, but can also (more likely) be shifted to 3.3; we shouldn't
exclude any of the possibilities technically.
    * Communication with external designers just started (two folks from
      Novell); Meeting to be scheduled.

Kind regards,
Liz
>>> 3.2. Reverting the change until OOo 4.0 would give us enough time to
>>> update our extension and roll out the updated version. So I support
>>> Michael's suggestion to re-implement the interfaces that are missing,
>>> at least temporary, and document the change so that people are aware
>>> of the issue and can adapt their macros/extensions.
>>>
>> until now you are the only one with this problem. How many places using this
>> code do you have in your extension? We gave you the necessary info to do it
>> correct. It should be not really a big change i guess but anyway. I let it
>> up to others to decide if it is a showstopper or not.
>>
>> But how can we prevent you from rolling out 3.2 when it is not already final
>> and released? Either you change your broken or wrong extensions or we do the
>> changes back. You have to do it anyway in the near future whereas we have
>> double work. Sounds not really optimal ;-)
>
> We really shouldn't argue this based on who has the most work because
> of this change but based on what is the right thing to do in this
> case. The fact of the matter is that multiple interfaces were removed
> without advance notice. Sure, these interfaces may have been included
> in error in the first place but since neither the "wrong" interfaces
> nor the right way to do it were documented how could someone have
> known that he used something that wasn't even supposed to be there? So
> you can't really blame someone for using those interfaces. Okay, maybe
> you CAN blame them for using _anything_ that isn't documented but in
> this case that would have meant to just completely do without this
> functionality which wasn't really a good option either.

i don't want to blame anybody but i wanted to raise more awareness. If
an API is not documented (which should be fixed always) ask before you
use it. That would prevent situations like this. Nobody should rely on
the given implementation when it is not documented. If yes than they
have to live with changes.

The users of our API can help a lot to improve APIs and the
documentation by communicating their problems, their ideas etc. Don't
hesitate to submit an issue. It's always a valuable contribution and
don't take it personal if an issue/feature request won't be fixed.

> So, removing the interfaces in general is fine, but not without giving
> people ample time to react to this change and to learn how to do it
> right. Just breaking their extensions/macros from one minor version to
> the next isn't very nice.
i agree at least a note on interface-announce should have taken place.
But the developer forget it and didn't thought about the relevance i guess

>
> But yes, I'm biased because our extension is affected. You are right
> that it's not such a big change, and I may have exaggerated a bit. But
> you must understand that it's a bit of a shock when you realize that
> some interfaces suddenly just disappear from OOo 3.1 to 3.2 without
> any warning or explanation. It also has the effect that you begin to
> wonder what else could have gone missing that maybe you didn't notice
> in your test cases.
i agree again and yes we should try to improve the overall situation. We
need also better tests. When we allow even incompatible changes in the
future it should never happen without a clear communication and a well
documented workaround.

>
> Anyway, we now have an explanation what happened and we can do the
> necessary changes. I still think it would be better to postpone the
> removal of the interfaces to a later version, but if really noone else
> has a problem with it I'm not going to argue any further.
as i mentioned before it's up to you to put it on or suggest it for the
showstopper list on the releases@... list
>> >> branding on user's desktops.
>> >>
>> >> 2. The OOo document icons are part of our visual identity and
>> therefore
>> >> used in several marketing areas. We should not give up this chance as
>> >> there might be an alternative (icons with both branding elements).
>> >
>> > I remember how annoyed I was when I installed an early beta of Lotus
>> > Symphony and it replaced all my OOo desktop icons with the horribly
>> garish
>> > IBM ones.
>>
>> Isn't this a general issue? Whatever installation comes last provides
>> the icons.
>
> If it is not customizable during installation...
>>
>> >
>> > As ODF becomes established, users may well have multiple ODF supporting
>> > applications on their desktops. So IMHO having all those applications
>> > sharing a standard set of desktop icons is not terribly useful.
>> Users need
>> > to know what application will start when they click an icon.
>> >
>>
>> Unfortunately, there can only be one icon per file format with current
>> desktop environments regardless of the number of supporting applications
>> installed, as well different users might have a different preferences to
>> choose standard or application specific icons, hence there has to be a
>> solution to meet the users will in an easy way.
>
> My approach: show the user by the icons which application is the
> standard one to open a certain file format. This may be done by an
> application symbol in rather low contrast (to keep the main interest on
> the ODF part).
>
> At least if people want to modify their documents it is important which
> application is opening, beacuse the features differ quite a lot. If you
> only want to view a PDF or JPG file (or hear a MP3), this is less
> important.
>>
>> General remark: I didn't find the time to read the whole discussion
>> here, so I might reiterate things that have already been said. Anyway I
>> think this discussion is mostly happening at the wrong place. As we have
>> often emphasized "OOo is not equal ODF". Consequently, a standardized
>> set of icons for ODF should be specified and provided by the ODF
>> Adoption TC at OASIS [1]. Subsequently the ODF Adoption TC would
>> recommend the use of this icon set to the implementers and later measure
>> the success of its work.
>
> The present iconset has been created by the art team at Sun and is
> already integrated in StarOffice 9.2. Integration in OOo has been hold
> back (probably until OOo 3.3) to coordinate with the project while in
> the meantime contact to OASIS has been searched.
>
> In my eyes this should have been coordinated before - and I read some of
> the comments here and on other lists, that there are several backdrafts
> in the present icons that should be handled before the request to define
> them as officially approved OASIS iconset.
>>
>> Personal remark: I would strongly prefer standardized icon sets for any
>> file format. IMHO the clear type recognition should be the main priority
>> for ease of use.
>
> As mentioned before: because different applications provide different
> actions to one file format (one is viewer, others are meant to modify
> the file), I'd like to add an area in the icons that shows a symbol or
> graphical element of the standard application opening the file.

mmh, maybe you can show us something real instead of repeating again and
again that it should have been done differently.
Show us your icons and we can discuss it.

And sorry if it sounds unfriendly but talking only is not enough and we
already know your opinion.

Just my 2 cents

Juergen

>
>> A consistent set of icons provided by the desktop seems
>> to be very nice from the artwork point of view, but sometimes leads to
>> hardly distinguishable similarities.
>
> I agree with you on the benefit of a general symbol language - without
> regards to the application, a text document should be represented by the
> same symbols. But I don't see a reason to remove the application
> information from the icons...
>
> Best regards
>
> I've been trying to work out some details about image maps. The
> ImageMap Editor does not have a Help button, so I used the Help index
> to try to find more info. Later I stumbled on one Help page by
> accident, by clicking on the Properties button on the ImageMap Editor
> and then on the Help button which I found there. I was unable to reach
> this Help page from any of the other Help pages about ImageMap or the
> ImageMap Editor (even the one that mentions the Properties button and
> what it does).
>
> Is this on the list of indexing improvements to be made?

The "jdbc:*" and "sdbc:*" URLs are for usage with the DriverManager,
they describe a "connection resource". Your code, however, passes it to
the DatabaseContext, whose getByName expects either the registration
name of a data source, or a URL to an .odb file. Those latter URLs have
nothing to do with the sdbc/jdbc URLs to be used with the DriverManager.
>>> I've established a database with two tables that appears to be working
>>> very well. I'm trying to write a Basic macro that issues a query and
>>> generates some statistics from the results. I'm getting a runtime error
>>> that says "No content provider available for URL!" Any idea what I'm
>>> doing wrong?
>> This sounds as if you're trying to establish a connection to some
>> file-based database, i.e. your connection URL starts with something like
>> sdbc:dbase: or sdbc:flat:, and the URL after that prefix is wrong.
> OOo Base and does exist as "C:\RahStuff\Base_Stuff\Cleve_CBC.odb".
>
> To get an index with subject and author for messages 123-456 , mail:
> <dev-index.123_456@...>
>
> They are always returned as sets of 100, max 2000 per request,
> so you'll actually get 100-499.
>
> To receive all messages with the same subject as message 12345,
> send an empty message to:
>
> The messages do not really need to be empty, but I will ignore
> their content. Only the ADDRESS you send to is important.
>
> You can start a subscription for an alternate address,

I'm not sure if the online_help list is still in use, as no one has
posted to it since March 2008. So I'm posting here as well as there.

Is this on the list of indexing improvements to be made?
and I want to do more transclusion of topics used in several places.

I would like to do some things like conditional transclusions, and
transcluding only parts of a page (if those things are possible), but
I am concerned that some pages might gets a bit complicated and then
are a problem for other people to maintain without breaking them.

I won't personally have time to do much of anything until next month
> Hello Dick,
>
> From a 'wild guess' stand point - I would look at your SQL statement
> for procedures, functions, control statements perhaps, that the OOo
> parser does not recognize. I would also check that Escape Processing is
> turned off when you try to execute the statement.
>
> Anyway - that is a first type of thing to look at.
>
> Let us know how it goes - ok?
>
> Drew

Please see my reply to Frank where I've included the statements I'm
using. I've looked at them until I'm cross eyed and can't see what's wrong.
sufficient, but is there a solution?
Or is there a function to create an hash string directly from OOoBasic?

Thanks
