OOo@FOSDEM 2010: Call for Papers

Hi,

the OpenOffice.org project will have again a DevRoom at the FOSDEM 2010.
The conference will take place from 6-7 February 2010 in Brussels,
Belgium. Our DevRoom will be on Saturday February 6th from 1:00pm to 7:00pm.

It is up to us to organize an interesting and exciting DevRoom to
present our project and to show that OpenOffice.org offers a wide area
for developers. The DevRoom should attract potential new developers as
well as experienced ones. We should share our knowledge with others,
should organize coding or QA sessions, workshops or talks where we refer
about or highlight a special topic.

You can be part of it!

If you are interested in doing a talk, a workshop or coding/QA session
please let us know. Please submit your proposal on the wiki page
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/FOSDEM/2010/CFP until December
18th 2009.

It is not yet guaranteed that we can sponsor our speakers next year
again but it's likely that we can sponsor at least parts of the costs.
So don't hesitate and submit your proposal. We are looking forward to
receive it.

I tested some new features of 1.9 in cws
One question regarding BACKUP command it could create backup files on
file system, it will be supported?
When I run this command:
BACKUP DATABASE TO 'C:\backup.tgz' BLOCKING
Get error, in SQL command window:
5: file input/output error: Required file is missing:
C:\Downloads\OOotest\hsqldb19\Alkalmazottak31_1111.odb.properties in
statement [BACKUP DATABASE TO 'C:\backup.tgz' BLOCKING]

I'm definitely interested too.

A lot of how things are done in the OOoWiki now in the Documentation
Project and other places are simply because that's the best way we knew
how at the time. We're definitely not using the MediaWiki syntax and
parser tools to their full extent. I think we've only brushed the
surface of what is possible in MW :-)

Not every discovery will be helpful in every place, but look at the
improvements that have been made recently.. the changes you guys made to
the Master TOC, the relative linking suggestion you had Nino... the
experiments with Interwiki linking from Bjoern... It's all really
interesting, and all stuff we can use.

If I follow this right.. this will only work if the PAGENAMEs are
identical below the ISO lang code. That is not being done with any
consistency on any Wiki docs except the Developer's, Admin and Basic
Guides. Also, as you said it is not working to go from any language
except the English pages.

I've used a variation on this that works both ways, but requires passing
a variable to get around restrictions on the PAGENAME variable. When a
translation is done, the translatior has to do nothing more than copying
the Template name to the translated page... then he/she automatcially
will get all known translated languages.
I've used one template per manual to allow for the dfferent languages
the documents have been translated into. For example the Dev Guide uses:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Template:Documentation/DevGuideLanguages
and the Admin guide uses:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Template:InterWiki_Languages_AdminGuide
(which now that I look at it, needs to be cleaned up... different naming
structure because it was done at different times)

Restrictions on the PAGENAME variable... you can only have the entire
page name including the ISO lang code at the beginning or the very last
subpage (SUBPAGENAME). Short of fiddling with lots of parser coding,
you cannot easily extract everything past the ISO Lang code.

I wonder if there is some combination of the two ideas we can use?

Just for those of you who don't read the UX discuss list. Lutz posted
minutes on the wiki (see his link below). Here is a quote from the

* Current discussions about the project take place in discuss@ux and
dev@marketing; Still, discuss@ux is the preferred mailing list,
which will also be used by this i-team for communication.
* Feedback is mixed, there are pro-speakers as well as cons.
* Still no formal UX support in place; Invitation still open; Will
continue without formal UX i-Team member if no-one joins the i-Team.
* i-Team also still lacking Documentation support; unclear if we
need it; Lutz will clarify.
* We do need a build to get the current implementation out into
user's hands for better feedback; Mikhail will work on this.
* We haven't yet settled on an integration target; it might be
3.2.1, but can also (more likely) be shifted to 3.3; we shouldn't
exclude any of the possibilities technically.
* Communication with external designers just started (two folks from
Novell); Meeting to be scheduled.

i don't want to blame anybody but i wanted to raise more awareness. If
an API is not documented (which should be fixed always) ask before you
use it. That would prevent situations like this. Nobody should rely on
the given implementation when it is not documented. If yes than they
have to live with changes.

The users of our API can help a lot to improve APIs and the
documentation by communicating their problems, their ideas etc. Don't
hesitate to submit an issue. It's always a valuable contribution and
don't take it personal if an issue/feature request won't be fixed.

i agree at least a note on interface-announce should have taken place.
But the developer forget it and didn't thought about the relevance i guess

i agree again and yes we should try to improve the overall situation. We
need also better tests. When we allow even incompatible changes in the
future it should never happen without a clear communication and a well
documented workaround.

We really shouldn't argue this based on who has the most work because
of this change but based on what is the right thing to do in this
case. The fact of the matter is that multiple interfaces were removed
without advance notice. Sure, these interfaces may have been included
in error in the first place but since neither the "wrong" interfaces
nor the right way to do it were documented how could someone have
known that he used something that wasn't even supposed to be there? So
you can't really blame someone for using those interfaces. Okay, maybe
you CAN blame them for using _anything_ that isn't documented but in
this case that would have meant to just completely do without this
functionality which wasn't really a good option either.
So, removing the interfaces in general is fine, but not without giving
people ample time to react to this change and to learn how to do it
right. Just breaking their extensions/macros from one minor version to
the next isn't very nice.

But yes, I'm biased because our extension is affected. You are right
that it's not such a big change, and I may have exaggerated a bit. But
you must understand that it's a bit of a shock when you realize that
some interfaces suddenly just disappear from OOo 3.1 to 3.2 without
any warning or explanation. It also has the effect that you begin to
wonder what else could have gone missing that maybe you didn't notice
in your test cases.

Anyway, we now have an explanation what happened and we can do the
necessary changes. I still think it would be better to postpone the
removal of the interfaces to a later version, but if really noone else
has a problem with it I'm not going to argue any further.

mmh, maybe you can show us something real instead of repeating again and
again that it should have been done differently.
Show us your icons and we can discuss it.

And sorry if it sounds unfriendly but talking only is not enough and we
already know your opinion.

nothing to do with the sdbc/jdbc URLs to be used with the DriverManager.

I am very interested in learning anything I can about how to do the
user guides better on the wiki. When I need to edit a page for some
other reason, I try to clean up the coding for links and other things,
and I want to do more transclusion of topics used in several places.

I would like to do some things like conditional transclusions, and
transcluding only parts of a page (if those things are possible), but
I am concerned that some pages might gets a bit complicated and then
are a problem for other people to maintain without breaking them.

I won't personally have time to do much of anything until next month
(next year!!), but I'm collecting information to study then. At that
time I will also be able to get back to your ideas on the task list
for OOoAuthors.

Create hash string

Hi all.

I have an .oxt in OOoBasic/Python where I create a hash string (in
Python) with a text and a password passed from OOoBasic.
The problem is that the password is passed simply readable to Python.
For the moment I encrypted the library in OOoBasic, even if it's not
sufficient, but is there a solution?
Or is there a function to create an hash string directly from OOoBasic?

Ah, that sounds wonderful. I should also mention that we involved in ODF development and advocacy are also trying to have a presence and active working group at Fosdem, and I'm sure the participants of that group would be happy to congregate with us--especially as several of those share identity.
