Hi John,

Before answering your question I would just mention a couple of points
about generally accepted mailing list etiquette:

* When responding to replies you get from a mailing list post, you
should use Thunderbird's "Reply" function, so that your message goes to
the list and not directly to the person who replied to your original
post. This way all other list subscribers get to see your message and
have the opportunity to provide additional, or better, answers. The only
reason I originally cc'd you directly, was that your message had been
"moderated", which indicated you were not subscribed to the list and may
not have seen my reply.

* Bottom posting (placing your reply at the end of the quoted message)
is preferred. All list messages are archived and this aids readability
for anyone reading the archive.

Neither of the above are major issues, but I thought it may be of some
interest to you for future reference.

As indicated in my earlier reply, when you use the right click context
menu on an existing document, it is that document, with it's existing
formatting (eg. page size) and content that is opened, NOT a new
document. Unless you have some kind of Windows Explorer enhancement
utility installed (New; Open Document Text ???), the standard context
menu does not provide any option to open a NEW OOo default document.

I suggest you stick with the "Start" menu, Quickstarter, or a desktop
shortcut, to start Writer with your customized default template.

The procedure outlined in the documentation wiki DOES work.

It sounds like you are either:

* Going to the file manger and opening an existing document which is
already formatted.

* Not completing step 4: "Choose File > Templates > Organize, browse to
your new template, and click Commands > Set As Default Template"

Try opening Writer from the "Start" menu, or the "Quickstarter" tray
icon. If you have actually set your default template, the new document
will have your formatting.

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to set the defaults for a new document.

Mostly I'm trying to make the page size "Letter" instead of "A4" but the
same issue exists for changing margins. The procedure documented on:

SUN sale to Oracle

do anyone have any idea what impact the sale of SUN to Oracle has for
OpenOffice.ORG?
How much of the development of the OOO is done by SUN employees?
Is it possible to fork OOO if need arises?

I am not much of a programmer but would like to inspect OOO code someday.
Where to get documentation of the code (if such exist)?

I don't think so. I think it is backscatter from the scammers that
provide sites offering OOo that are actually links to OOo mirrors (many
of which could pursue legal action against the scammers if they wished
to do so). The scammers charge for a download link, then they tell the
scamme (sp?) that they can get support by sending an email to users@.

It's nothing new, search the archives.

If you do this one field at a time, then I expect that you will call
your macro from a Form. The macro would then be triggered by the form as
the data is entered.

It sounds like you might be referring to something like a stored
procedure that is called when another field is updated directly in the
DB. This will be dependent on the DB used.

Your other option, which may not be practical, is to write a macro that
uses SQL to read the data, then use the macro to write it back out to
the "calculated" field.

Perhaps you can complain to your credit card company to get the charge
reversed. You've been charged for something that's a free download from
www.openoffice.org. Unfortunately, there are those who will scam
people, as you have experienced. There are some legit vendors who will
sell you a copy on a CD, but you should never have to pay for a download.

I know -- that's why I'm looking at some changes that could be done
within the current structure, like sending somebody a message with an
appropriate thread command. But if we at least know where we'd like to

I'm sorry to hear about your problems, however, it appears you have
either reached the wrong email address or were taken advantage of.
This is the OpenOffice.org users list, where volunteers support a free
Office Suite. OpenOffice.org is a free download, you shouldn't have
had to pay for anything. Unless you were buying a customized or
altered version.

It would take a big leap of the imagination to stretch those problems to
"your system can be bricked by the upgrade process".

Jonathon also wrote in an earlier post:

"If you are not willing to have to buy new hardware, because it
was bricked beyond fixing, then you are a "normal user". "

The bugs you listed caused temporary problems and are a long way from
what Jonathon claimed.

There are OOo reports of issues with graphic cards... sample:

None of those appear to have caused permanent damage to the video card,
but I reckon they could be interpreted as 'trashed the video card'.

Parallel document conversion possible?

We're using OpenOffice to convert graphic images to Powerpoint slides.
With OpenOffice 1.1.1 we could run multiple copies under the same userid
(I think by specifying the -userid parameter) but -headless didn't work right
(it still needed X).

With OpenOffice 2.3, -headless works right, but OpenOffice won't run multiple
copies under the same userid (even with the -userid option). We haven't tried
OpenOffice 3.x series yet.

We need to be able to run mutliple conversions simultaneously, to keep up
with incoming requests. Will OpenOffice 2.3 and later do this with a single
instance?
