>>> Hi,
>>>
>>> I am trying to figure out how to set the defaults for a new document.
>>>
>>> Mostly I'm trying to make the page size "Letter" instead of "A4" but the
>>> same issue exists for changing margins. The procedure documented on:
>>>
>>> http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Writer/FormattingPagesAndDocuments/How_can_I_change_the_default_Page_Style_margins,_so_that_when_I_start_a_new_document_the_margins_will_be_1_inch%3F
>>>
>>>
>>>
>>> Does NOT work. After I do that, then in Windows File Manager I right
>>> click and let it create a new blank document and it still is the old
>>> settings.
>>>
>>> How do I set the *master* default settings for new documents?
>>>
>>> - John Wright
>>
>> The procedure outlined in the documentation wiki DOES work.
>>
>> It sounds like you are either:
>>
>> * Going to the file manger and opening an existing document which is
>> already formatted.
>>
>> * Not completing step 4: "Choose File > Templates > Organize, browse to
>> your new template, and click Commands > Set As Default Template"
>>
>> Try opening Writer from the "Start" menu, or the "Quickstarter" tray
>> icon. If you have actually set your default template, the new document
>> will have your formatting.
>>
>> HTH
>>
>> Dave
>
> Dave,
>
> Thank you. It does appear to be working fine if I open OpenOffice via
> the Start menu.
>
> However, my normal method of creating a new document is to navigate with
> the file manager to the directory I want the document in, then I right
> click and choose New; Open Document Text. This new document
> unfortunately always seems to have A4 as paper size and hasn't picked up
> my preferred defaults.
>
> Do you know where WinXP is picking up the document to create when done
> via Windows Explorer (file manager)?
>
> - John

Hi John,

Before answering your question I would just mention a couple of points
about generally accepted mailing list etiquette:

* When responding to replies you get from a mailing list post, you
should use Thunderbird's "Reply" function, so that your message goes to
the list and not directly to the person who replied to your original
post. This way all other list subscribers get to see your message and
have the opportunity to provide additional, or better, answers. The only
reason I originally cc'd you directly, was that your message had been
"moderated", which indicated you were not subscribed to the list and may
not have seen my reply.

* Bottom posting (placing your reply at the end of the quoted message)
is preferred. All list messages are archived and this aids readability
for anyone reading the archive.

Neither of the above are major issues, but I thought it may be of some
interest to you for future reference.

As indicated in my earlier reply, when you use the right click context
menu on an existing document, it is that document, with it's existing
formatting (eg. page size) and content that is opened, NOT a new
document. Unless you have some kind of Windows Explorer enhancement
utility installed (New; Open Document Text ???), the standard context
menu does not provide any option to open a NEW OOo default document.

I suggest you stick with the "Start" menu, Quickstarter, or a desktop
shortcut, to start Writer with your customized default template.

Sorry I can't be of more help than this.

Please reply to users@... only.

> Hi,
>
> do anyone have any idea what impact the sale of SUN to Oracle has for
> OpenOffice.ORG?

See: http://www.openoffice.org/news/#plan

> How much of the development of the OOO is done by SUN employees?

"Almost" all of it.

> Is it possible to fork OOO if need arises?

It has already been done by Novell. See: http://www.go-oo.org/

> I am not much of a programmer but would like to inspect OOO code someday.
> Where to get documentation of the code (if such exist)?

See: http://download.openoffice.org/source/index.html

>
> Best Regards

do anyone have any idea what impact the sale of SUN to Oracle has for
OpenOffice.ORG?
How much of the development of the OOO is done by SUN employees?
Is it possible to fork OOO if need arises?

I am not much of a programmer but would like to inspect OOO code someday.
Where to get documentation of the code (if such exist)?

I don't think so. I think it is backscatter from the scammers that
provide sites offering OOo that are actually links to OOo mirrors (many
of which could pursue legal action against the scammers if they wished
to do so). The scammers charge for a download link, then they tell the
scamme (sp?) that they can get support by sending an email to users@.

It's nothing new, search the archives.
> Thanks John. My macros are extremely specific to a given task and could only
> be created via a macro programming language (such a the variety of basic
> used in openoffice). I use the dbms supplied by openoffice (mysql?). I have
> not been able to find any mention of how to use macros created in openoffice
> for calculated fields. I guess it can't be done.
> Thanks again.
> Jonathan
>
>

If you do this one field at a time, then I expect that you will call
your macro from a Form. The macro would then be triggered by the form as
the data is entered.

It sounds like you might be referring to something like a stored
procedure that is called when another field is updated directly in the
DB. This will be dependent on the DB used.

Your other option, which may not be practical, is to write a macro that
uses SQL to read the data, then use the macro to write it back out to
the "calculated" field.
>
>>> Have you tried =CELL(…)?
>>
>>
>> Doesn't have an infotype returning the sheet name.
>
> My default template for Calc has 2 named references:
> 1. Insert>Names>Define...[Ctrl+F3]
> cFilename refers to: CELL("FILENAME")
> [Add], [OK] (finsih the dialog since the next one depends on this one)
>
> 2. Insert>Names>Define...[Ctrl+F3]
> ThisSheet refers to:
> MID(cFilename;FIND("#$";cFilename)+2;LEN(cFilename))
> [Add], [OK]
>
> Now ThisSheet used in a formula refers to the current sheet's name.
>
> Together with ThisSheet you may also define things like:
> FileURL =MID(cFilename;2;SEARCH("'#";cFilename)-2)
> FileURLPath =MID(cFilename;2;SEARCH("/[^/]+'#";cFilename)-1)
> shSep =MID(ADDRESS(1;1;1;1;"Foo");4;1) ["!" in Excel, "." in Calc]
>

Thanks. I may have to tinker with it, though since I'll be doing links.

I know -- that's why I'm looking at some changes that could be done
within the current structure, like sending somebody a message with an
appropriate thread command. But if we at least know where we'd like to
>>>
>> That surely would not hurt, but it's probably worth looking at some past
>> an archive search on ezmlm and/or CollabNet (and I know that will be very
>> Back in Sept 2008, the alpha release of Ubuntu trashed the video card
>> on some systems.
>
> We are talking about OpenOffice.org developer snapshots, not an
> operating system. There is a huge difference. Provide some data and
> references to back up your idiotic statements about developer snapshots
> trashing your computer or take a hike.
>

There are OOo reports of issues with graphic cards... sample:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=45534
[Impress Slide Show Crashes Video Card]

None of those appear to have caused permanent damage to the video card,
but I reckon they could be interpreted as 'trashed the video card'.
Perhaps that is what jonathan was referring to?

From Help:

<quote>
Using Shortcut Keys
A great deal of your application's functionality can be called up by
using shortcut keys. For example, the Ctrl+O shortcut keys are shown
next to the Open entry in the File menu. If you want to access this
function by using the shortcut keys, press and hold down Ctrl and then
press the O key. Release both keys after the dialog appears.
When operating your application, you can choose between using the mouse
or the keyboard for almost all of the operations available.

Calling Menus With Shortcut Keys
Some of the characters shown on the menu bar are underlined. You can
access these menus directly by pressing the underlined character
together with the ALT key. Once the menu is opened, you will again find
underlined characters. You can access these menu items directly by
simply pressing the underlined character key.
