Dear all
Can anyone tell me of an application that would let a pc link to mobile
phone (by Bluetooth?) & let the user answer the phone by pc?  Preferably
dialling via pc too.

I'm sure this must be out there but I can't find it!

Barry - does the mobile need to be part of the set-up? Could you not just use a soft phone or even skype or similar, along with a 3g connection if used away from home.

Adrian
This chap needs access to the full phone network.  Am I right in
thinking that Skype only links to Skype?  If a "softphone" means using
the pc as the phone via 3g, then that could be ideal.  Tell me more.

The trend has definitley gone the way of the softphone as Adrian
suggests.. (Skype, Gizmo etc.. can access the full phone network -
although it does cost) - alternatively take a look at PC Dialer
http://blueshareware.com/bluetooth_pc_dialer.asp
Check also the handsets website: often they supply dialing software
(although they can be a utter shambles)) as part of a sync solution.
Note though: I don't think you can usually speak via the computer - is
the phone going to be out of the way?? I do note that you can use a
bluetooth headset with PC Dialer.. perhaps a solution in there
somewhere

w
PS: If your on a mac there are a number of nice solutions (it used to
be built into Tiger)

Hmmmm. Im sure you can answer a Nokia smartphone (N series up) by having
it connected to Nokia PC Suite. I use it all the time for sending texts,
and I distinctly remember a "so and so is calling" pop up happening
during an incoming call, with an "answer call?" button on it.

Try that.

Thanks - pcdialer is what I was thinking of, but might not be the only solution.

Can landline & mobile phones dial in to Skype /Gizmo?

At the moment this chap will use his mobile on headset or loudspeaker, but that might not be the final solution.  However keeping phone mic & pc mic separate has its attractions to avoid conflicts with NaturallySpeaking.

Hmmm, "soft phone" simply means a software phone.  However there there are 2 components to any such service, the telephone be it hard or soft, and the connection from your local network/PC, to the telephone network.

Taking them in reverse order, Vonage looks to be a domestic service provider which bundles call costs from about £5.99 on top of line rental and broadband connection.
http://www.vonage.co.uk/index.php
which does specifically say you can make calls using a traditional phone, or on the PC.

If the vonage interface doesn't do it for you then you'll need a dediate softphone package, many of these are designed for corporate so need to sit on a server or if they're domestic then tend to be ful of instant messaging and other more social features and concentrate less on the actual phone call quality - one that looks a potential candidate and does say that it will work over wifi or 3g is:
http://www.nch.com.au/talk/

the other option of course if you want to keep it simple and use a mbile and use the PC to dial, manage contactsw etc is to use a nokia phone and the nokia pc suite software. Not show however if you can answer incoming calls in it, and you can send but can't read incoming sms messages.

many packages are either corporate systems designed to sit of servers and feature rich, or social media type application which offer lots of instant messaging and related facilities but not clear on how good they are at actually decent quality voice calls.

** Commercial interest **

The Grid 2 has a number of solutions that might help you.  Hands up those
who guessed that I might suggest that!

Option 1: The Grid 2 can be connected to a mobile phone over Bluetooth,
initiate a call (you can enter the number), answer a call and hang up.  You
can also send/receive sms (text messages).

Note: the number of mobile phones supported is limited (many new phones
don't support the older interface that we use) so please check before buying
a phone for this purpose.

Option 2 is to take a remote controlled phone (such as the Sero) and control
it with an environment controller (such as the Tira or UUIRT).  This has the
advantage that it uses the land line (which may be cheaper).

Option 3 is Skype, which can be used to call out to a phone number (via
SkypeOut) and provide a phone number to receive calls (via SkypeIn), all at
competitive prices.
You may not need The Grid 2 to do this, but if you need the access features
then it could help.  Note that you cannot enter a new number in TG2 to make
a SkypeOut call (existing contacts only, I'm afraid), but you can do Skype
chats to other PC users.

In all cases, you could make a really straightforward grid with just the
phone controls on it.

A 3G air card would allow you to Skype from anywhere.  You can get these
for about 15 GBP per month which includes 15GB use - but don't go over
or they hit you hard with data charges!

Read&WriteGold - 'Scan to Word' produces empty page

by Mike Parry :: Rate this Message:

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong here?

I'm using R&W Gold version 9 to scan a jpg file which has an image of text on it, and asking it to output it into a Word (2007) document.

It appears to be working, and it duly launches Word to show you the results, but the page is blank.

So I tried it again, this time with a PDF file. Again, the resulting Word 2007 was blank.

(I had a look in 'Scanning Options' and apart from the 'multipage settings' in the right-hand panel, everything else was greyed out. No idea if that is significant)

Thanks in advance

Hmmm. What do you mean by 'an image of text' ? A scan of a doc?

"Hmmm. What do you mean by 'an image of text' ? A scan of a doc?"

Yeah, it's a jpg file that is a picture of some text. I'm thinking R&W should be able to scan the jpg file, OCR it into usable text, and then put the text into Word.

Is the text nice and clear - as in, not too far away and faint, not too
skewed - clearly discernable as text?

It's this:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4436008_speech-ms-office-using-macros.html

It is a little small and faint and it's not exactly english - it's VBA code. But I'm sure I should be getting *something* after OCR - ing it.

But as I mentioned earlier, I did the same operation  - 'scan from file' - with a pdf, and got another blank page. So it has to be something to do with R&W

Looks good, though to be honest, it's probable easier to just install WordTalk from the CallCentre, it's all already there for you with lots of nice speech options and various bits and pieces.

Yep, should be getting something - even if garbage, and the PDF is
disturbing too (i presume the pdf contained text!)

Try Scanning Options> Output tab and have a tinker. Retain full
formatting... should be checked for Word, PDF should be fully formattted
etc.

Hmmm, when it goes through the scan pass process, does it happen
instantaneously? If so sounds like RWG's scanning engine is up the
spout, as it should take some time to pass over doc/pdf/jpg so that it
SEES it properly.

Restart Machine, Restart RWG, try again. No joy? Remove fully, then
reinstall.

Sorry couldn't be more help.

"Retain full formatting... should be checked for Word, PDF should be fully formattted etc."

Did that

"when it goes through the scan pass process, does it happen instantaneously?"

No, it throws up a dialogue box telling me it is OCR-ing, which takes a few seconds to complete.

"Restart Machine, Restart RWG, try again. No joy? Remove fully, then reinstall."

Was just about to, then I tried same operation on a different computer - this time using R&W Gold version 8 - once with the same jpg, and once with a different PDF.

Blank page both times.

So, by logical deduction - as I am the only common factor here, the problem must be something to do with me...

I think I'm going to come back to this problem later - I'm fed up with it now!

Thanks all, for your help.
