Hi there,
I tried compiling pgfplots manual from the git repo and this is the
error I am getting:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
LaTeX Warning: Reference `sec:pgfplots:optimization' on page 5 undefined
on input line 127.
) [5] (./pgfplots.intro.tex [6]
set terminal table; set output "gnuplot/pgfplots_sin.table"; set format "%.5f"
"gnuplot/pgfplots_sin.gnuplot", line 1: unknown or ambiguous terminal
type; type just 'set terminal' for a list
! Package pgfplots Error: Sorry, the gnuplot-result file
'gnuplot/pgfplots_sin.table' could not be found. Maybe you need to
enable the shell-escape feature? For pdflatex, this is '>> pdflatex
-shell-escape'. You can also invoke '>> gnuplot <file>.gnuplot'
manually on the respective gnuplot file..
See the pgfplots package documentation for explanation.

It seems 'set terminal table', which was obsolete in 4.2.3, is no longer
supported by gnuplot 4.2.6.
