Hi, folks,
I hope to have a few days spare in phoenix mid december.

I will be driving a car unfortunately.

I would like to see some of the local scenery, which I understand is stunning.

as I will be driving on the wrong side of the road, I don't want to travel huge distances.
but I am prepared to have a different hotel each night.

is there anywhere where you would reccomend that I try to go?

the Apache trail is one section of road I have been reccommended to try.
regards John

Hi John,
I'm an honest to god born, and bread Arizona Boy. How long are you
to be there, and how long does it take you to recuperate?
Are you a wild-man, or do you prefer the sublime desert beauty. It'll
be quite cold there up North, but if you are a shutter-bug, you
already know about the light.
Don't feel bad about being in a cage. Phoenix, is a rolling road
block, during certain hours. The roads just haven't kept pace with
the population.
You are going in prime season if you're  going the Scottsdale, and
the East side. It's much less "Arizona Boy" If you get my drift.
   Happy trails, stay South,
    Poppa Jack (native american)

Hi Poppa Jack,
I am expecting to arrive on the Saturday, late... hit the sack and try to sleep the night away...
Sunday mid day I meet my sponsor, and travel to Tucson, planned as a lazy day I plan to let him drive...

Monday afternoon and evening social meeting with one of the people we are traveling to meet. Tuesday / Wednesday, that four letter word... WORK...
Wednesday p.m. return to Phoenix so My sponsor can get his flight home, (I should be back on Arizona time just in time for Thursday / Friday "Me time" Saturday make way to airport and back to reality...

So far I have a hotel in Phoenix Saturday Night, in Tucson Sunday Monday Tuesday night, and a hotel in Phoenix Friday night.

that leaves Wednesday night and Thursday night that could be planned on the trail...

Being a bit of a couch potato. I don't expect to be hiking into the wilderness to get 'up close and personal' with nature.

So I would like to see a bit of the countryside with easy cage access.

When you say it'll be quite cold.. Are you talking Fur coats and thermal underware for an Eskimo cold, or normal for the time of the year for a Brit, cold..?  I understand there is a lot of desert around there, does that infer cold nights?

I guess at some stage I need to get some gifts for the family...
Prove that I have actually been to America, rather than having a crafty week away with a lover...  (Just can't afford to get the Trophy on the plane, so I'll have to leave her at home). I did think about hiring a bike for a couple of days, but then since the hire company only provides a helmet, I didn't fancy using my entire baggage allowance for leathers, boots, gloves, wet weather kit, etc.   I know, I.m a Grumpy old man...!

You say the roads in Arizona are like a travelling Road block. is that in the cities or out in the open, or both?

Should I plan modest distances expecting slow travel everywhere?

My sponsor is expecting Phoenix to Tucson to take two hours, which suggests normal road speeds, is he being ambitious? He's a cannuck so possibly not too aware of the reality in Arizona...

Regards John

I did a 50CC Iron Butt ride through there last year. Once you are out of the cities the traffic opens up. I averaged 70 MPH accross AZ. Of course I was smart enough to avoid Pheonix. If you have the time you might consider going north to Sedona. better known as red rock country. When I lived there 30 years ago it was stunning. Snow country up that way, so I think a warm coat would be a good idea. As far as Pheonix goes I'd have to say the temps would be close to Manchester only expect lots of sun and low humidity. Hey John,
If you are going down to Tucson, You've got to see"Old Tombstone,
and all the sights there. It won't be freezin' ass cold, but you'll
want to layer. It is unique to the extent that there is so much well
kept period buildings, and the shows, fights, and gunfights, they try
to replicate. Being a college town, Tucson, is replete with very
nice, and reasonably priced places to eat. You may not find a Western
style Bar-B-QUE (Must be cooked on Mesquite if it's steak. There is a
Cajon  restaurant on the east side of town on a street that sounds
like Tankeraey, That serves the best jimbalya you'll ever eat. Also
on the East side there are vert sedate, and safe form reptiles all in
hibernation. It's a bird watchers treat. Should you trek these ease
( of some kind and I mean easy), you'll be treated to the most
beautiful Sonoran desert in the world. Take a walking stick, of some
kind any time you venture out on desert anywhere, you'll want to polk
things, and some don't like it. Never roll over o rock with your
hands, use the stick. Wear a good hat, carry a little food, and a
canteen. Stick to the marked trails. I know my way around, and i
carry a compas, and a way to make fire. The nites can get down in the
30's. Oh one last thing, never honk your horn at anybody. In Arizona
Flashing bright lites, and honking are serious fightin' words, and
everybody carries a gun. It's the last of the Wild West.
   Kindest regards,
    Poppa Jack
ps. Wear leather foot gear. Cactus goes right thru tennis!

Oh Yeah.
There's plenty of "Arizonacana" in Scottsdale, and I suspect more
rustic, and l think better stuff in Old Tombstone, and Old Tucson.
Most is local made, not from China (not that there's anything wrong
with that.) You'll also see folks, artists selling at roadside
stands. They'll even usually bargain. Try to buy local made things.
The Tribal folks really need your support, In-spite of the obvious
casinos.    I wish I was going with you. You'll be so glad you're in
a car!

John,

Arizona is a great place to visit.  My lovely bride lived ther for a few years in a past life.  She and I have spent some great vacations there since.

Sounds like you're committed to heading South so make it a point to visit Bisbee if you can.  It's an old copper mining town not that far from Tuscon and worth the visit.  The Huachuca (pronounced "Wachooka") Mountains are beautiful.  There's actually a fair amount of natural water in the area so it's nice and green most of the year.  Ramsey Cayon in particular is closeby and has some nice hiking trails and the hummingbirds should still be hanging around.

If you had more time and were heading North, Sedona, Oak Creek, Jerome and of course the Grand Canyon can't be beat.  Blue Sky rental in Pheonix has a nice selection of big Harleys.  Not bad for touring the desert.  We didn't have rain gear, but we did take our leathers and some warm fleece type layer clothing.  You'll need the layers either way.  Enjoy!

Thanks Poppa,
I am not sure whether the Cashino's are run by Local tribal folks... I will be keeping well away from them either way.

but I'll try and support the local enterprise where I can.

regards John

You'll be so glad you're in
a car!
