plugin for RIAA eq?

Hi all,

I'm looking to record some albums into Ardour.  I have a hardware
phono preamp that does the secret-squirrel RIAA eq stuff, but it's
very flaky.  Is there a simple insert-it-and-forget-it eq for record
players?

The only real solution is a hardware preamp. You can apply
the RIAA filter in software, but unless you start with a
*very* clean digital signal it's not a good idea to do so.

Neither a mic input, a line input or a high-Z instrument input
has the right combination of impedance and sensitivity for a
phono cartridge. Not using the right impedance will mean the
EQ will be wrong.

I do have an RIAA ladpsa plugin, let me known if you want it.
*If* you want to try without a real phono preamp the only
input type that *could* work is a high-Z instrument input,
with a 47k resistor in parallel. But the noise level could
be below par.

Ciao,

i'm not aware of one. if you have an alternative preamp that matches the
impedance of a phono cartridge, try building the curve yourself:

check out the FIL plugin. it's a four-band parametric. nedko arnaudov
has written a nice graphical wrapper, google for lv2FIL.

then look up the curve (i think it's on wikipedia) and just reconstruct
it with the appropriate filter settings. here's another one:

http://www.euronet.nl/~mgw/background/riaa/uk_riaa_background_1.html

i could get something that roughly resembles the RIAA shape with just
two filters. it's not really correct, but it's a start.

I've done that with good results with audacity (equalization -> riaa), i don't think there's a ladspa plugin on Ardour.
Hope this could help

I think there is/was a preset for jamin for this floating on the web or even
inside the jamin distribution-package...

Oh, I like the old GDR record-players which had the correcting pre-amp built-
in. Just connect them to any line connector and you are set.

Have fun,

Arnold

Josh, if you decide to go the hardware route as Fons suggests, and
you're not afraid of a soldering iron, ESP Sound have what by all
accounts is an excellent phono preamp for moving-magnet pickups.
